Unlinking OneDrive from your PC disconnects the current Windows device from your Microsoft account so OneDrive stops syncing that account. Done correctly, your local OneDrive folder remains, while the cloud connection is removed.
This guide walks through the most reliable ways to unlink OneDrive on Windows 10 and Windows 11 in 2024. It also covers what to expect with your files, how to handle failures, and what to try when the “Unlink this PC” option won’t work.

What Unlinking OneDrive Actually Means (and What It Does Not)
When you unlink OneDrive, you’re essentially removing the account relationship between your PC and your OneDrive storage. OneDrive stops syncing for that account and you may be prompted to sign in again if you later launch OneDrive.
Unlinking typically does not delete files from the cloud. Your local copies may remain, depending on what file state you’re using (Files On-Demand vs fully downloaded).

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Does: stops sync for the selected account on this device; signs you out of OneDrive on the PC.
- Does not: automatically erase files in OneDrive online; does not force-deletes everything in your local OneDrive folder.
- May: leave an orphaned “OneDrive” folder locally if you don’t manage file locations afterward.
Before You Start: Prerequisites and Quick Checks
Take two minutes to reduce the risk of conflicts or missing updates.
- Confirm your PC is signed into the Microsoft account you want to unlink. (You’ll see the account email inside OneDrive.)
- Make sure OneDrive isn’t mid-sync. Look for the OneDrive cloud icon in the system tray and wait until it finishes current uploads/downloads.
- Know where your files live. In most Windows installs, your OneDrive folder is at
%UserProfile%\OneDrive(commonly Documents inside OneDrive if you used known folder backup).
If your priority is safety, you can also temporarily copy important files out of your OneDrive folder to another location (external drive or local folder) before unlinking.
Method 1: Unlink OneDrive via Windows Settings (Windows 10/11)
This is the most straightforward path when the OneDrive app is running normally.
- Press Win and type OneDrive. Open OneDrive settings (on many builds it opens OneDrive directly; otherwise open the OneDrive app first).
- In the OneDrive window, click Settings tab.
- Find the account area and click Unlink this PC (wording can appear as Unlink depending on Windows build).
- When prompted, confirm to sign out/unlink.
- Close OneDrive and restart Windows if you want to ensure background processes stop cleanly.
If you don’t see Unlink this PC, use Method 2 or the troubleshooting section.
Method 2: Unlink OneDrive via the OneDrive App Menu
Use this when OneDrive’s tray icon is present. It’s often faster and works even if Windows Settings paths differ between builds.
- Click the OneDrive cloud icon in the system tray (near the clock). If you don’t see it, click the up-arrow ^ to show hidden tray icons.
- Click Help & Settings (gear icon).
- Select Settings.
- On the Account tab (or within settings UI), choose Unlink this PC.
- Confirm when asked to unlink/sign out.
- Wait a few seconds, then check the tray icon again to ensure OneDrive is no longer actively connected.
After unlinking, you can keep the OneDrive folder locally. If you want it gone, see Method 5—but only after you’ve confirmed you won’t need those local files.
Method 3: Stop Sync Without Unlinking (for urgent bandwidth or conflict issues)
Sometimes you need to pause syncing now, but don’t want to sever the account relationship yet. This can help while you resolve issues (like duplicate library conflicts, large uploads, or syncing stuck loops).

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable

- Open the OneDrive settings via the tray icon → Help & Settings → Settings.
- On the Settings tab, find Pause syncing or Pause OneDrive.
- Select a pause duration (commonly 2, 8, or 24 hours depending on your OneDrive build).
- If the goal is to stop moving specific folders, go to Account → Choose folders and uncheck folders you don’t want synced.
This doesn’t replace unlinking. Once you’re ready to fully detach, use Method 1 or 2.
Method 4: Turn Off OneDrive on Startup and Prevent Auto-Launch
Unlinking should stop OneDrive from re-signing, but you may still see it auto-launch due to startup entries. This method reduces noise and prevents background activity.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Go to the Startup apps tab.
- Find Microsoft OneDrive.
- Click it and select Disable.
- Restart your PC (optional, but helps confirm it’s not reappearing).
If OneDrive was installed from Microsoft Store, the Startup entry name can vary slightly, but it will still reference OneDrive.
Method 5: Remove OneDrive (Last Resort) and Keep Your Data Safe
If OneDrive is misbehaving and you want a clean break, removal is the “nuclear” option. Prefer unlinking first, then remove only if you’re sure you won’t need the sync client.
Safety first: Before removal, confirm you’ve copied any required files out of %UserProfile%\OneDrive.
Windows 11: Uninstall OneDrive using Settings
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- In the search box, type OneDrive.
- Select Microsoft OneDrive (or similar).
- Click the three-dot menu → Uninstall.
- Reboot if Windows prompts you or if background sync seems stuck.
Windows 10/11: Uninstall using Windows Terminal (Admin)
If your UI doesn’t show an uninstall button (common with some enterprise builds), use PowerShell as Administrator.
- Right-click Start → Windows Terminal (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin).
- Run the command to uninstall the OneDrive app package (this varies by install method). If you need a precise package name, you can list packages in your environment first.
- After uninstall, restart your PC.
Because Windows Store packaging differs across devices, verify the exact package name on your PC before uninstalling. If you want, tell me your Windows version (Windows 10/11 + Home/Pro/Enterprise) and I can give the exact command path.

What Happens to Your Files After Unlinking?
Your data behavior depends on how your files are stored locally.

Local folder and file state
On most setups, unlinking stops sync, but your existing local folder remains. If you use Files On-Demand, some items may show placeholders and only download when opened (while you’re still connected). After unlinking, that behavior can change.
- Fully downloaded files: usually remain accessible locally.
- Files On-Demand placeholders: may not be retrievable if you’re no longer signed into OneDrive on that PC.
- Changes made after unlinking: won’t sync anywhere because the account link is removed.
Cloud side
Unlinking typically leaves your OneDrive online data intact. It does not convert your OneDrive into something else or automatically delete content.
Known Folder Backup
If you enabled backup of Desktop/Documents/Pictures to OneDrive, unlinking may stop syncing those folders. You might also see those folders remain locally without continuing updates to the cloud.
When Unlinking Fails: Troubleshooting Checklist
Here are the most common reasons unlinking doesn’t work and what to do next.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors1) OneDrive settings UI won’t show Unlink this PC
Try Method 2 via the tray icon. If the tray icon is missing or the app is hung, restart OneDrive.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc → Task Manager.
- Find Microsoft OneDrive processes.
- Select them and click End task.
- Press Win, type OneDrive, open it, then go back to Settings to unlink.
2) You get an error code or the unlink prompt loops
Confirm your Windows session isn’t blocking sign-out (for example, locked-down enterprise policies). If you’re on a work/school device, your organization can restrict OneDrive actions.

- Reboot and retry Method 1.
3) OneDrive won’t stop syncing after unlink
It’s usually one of two things: lingering background processes or queued uploads.
- End OneDrive tasks in Task Manager.
- After ending tasks, restart OneDrive and immediately unlink again.
- Check Event Viewer for OneDrive-related errors if it still refuses to detach.
4) Reset OneDrive client (repair path)
If the sync client is corrupted, resetting often restores the ability to unlink.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Unlinking without checking placeholders: If you relied on Files On-Demand, copy important files first so you still have local access.
- Deleting the OneDrive folder immediately: The folder is not a cache; it’s often your primary local copy. Only delete after verifying you have what you need elsewhere.
- Signing out but leaving sync enabled for another account: If you later sign in, syncing may resume and re-create structure. Plan the next account carefully.
- Relying on “Pause” and assuming it unlinks: Pause stops activity temporarily; it doesn’t detach the account.
Alternatives: Use Another Account or Reset OneDrive
Sometimes the real goal isn’t to unlink forever—it’s to switch accounts or fix an account mismatch.
Switch to a different Microsoft account
Unlink first (Methods 1 or 2), then sign in again with the correct account. This prevents the “mixed” state where files don’t map where you expect.
- Unlink this PC.
- Reopen OneDrive.
- Sign in with the desired Microsoft account.
- Use Choose folders to control what syncs.
Reset OneDrive while keeping your current data
A reset repairs the client configuration. It’s safer than deleting local files because your documents in %UserProfile%\OneDrive usually remain intact.

FAQ
Will unlinking OneDrive delete my files?
Usually no. Unlinking stops syncing and signs you out on the PC, but it typically doesn’t delete OneDrive online data. Your local folder may remain; however, Files On-Demand placeholders might not be retrievable without signing in.

Do I need to uninstall OneDrive to unlink it?
No. Unlinking is enough to detach the account and stop sync. Uninstalling is only necessary if you want the OneDrive client removed entirely or the app is corrupted.
What’s the difference between unlinking and turning off sync?
Turning off/pause sync stops syncing temporarily or for specific folders, but the account link remains. Unlinking removes the account connection so OneDrive won’t sync that account on the device.
My PC is a work/school device. Can I still unlink OneDrive?
Often you can, but organizations can restrict sign-out or device unlinking with policies. If the Unlink button is missing or errors occur, you may need admin help or a policy change.
After unlinking, will OneDrive stop showing in File Explorer?
It depends. The OneDrive folder may remain in File Explorer because it’s a local directory. If you want to remove the folder from navigation, you can move files out first and then manage the folder or uninstall the client.
How do I confirm OneDrive is truly unlinked?
After unlinking, check the OneDrive tray icon state, reopen OneDrive, and verify that you’re signed out and the account shown is no longer the one you intended to remove. Also confirm syncing activity stops (no upload/download indicators).
Bottom Line
To unlink OneDrive from a PC in 2024, use OneDrive settings or the tray menu and choose Unlink this PC. This cleanly removes the account connection while keeping your local folder in place—so you don’t have to “panic-delete” files.
If unlinking fails, restart OneDrive, then use the troubleshooting steps (including a client reset) before considering uninstall. If you share your Windows version and whether your OneDrive is personal or work/school, I can tailor the exact clicks and commands to your device.
