These five models represent different use cases, not a shared or independently verified ranking. Reviewers disagree on an overall winner: RTINGS named the JBL Boombox 4 its best outdoor speaker, What Hi-Fi? chose the JBL Charge 6 as its best waterproof speaker overall, and TechRadar selected the JBL Xtreme 5 as best overall in its waterproof-speaker guide. Here’s how to choose among them, with the trade-offs made clear.
How to choose an outdoor Bluetooth speaker
Outdoor listening is different from listening in a small room. Sound disperses, listeners may stand around the speaker rather than in front of it, and wind or conversation can make a speaker seem quieter. For a group, consider whether a model gets loud enough and keeps its sound reasonably consistent at different listening angles—not just whether it sounds good up close.

Then match the speaker to the outing. A large, heavy model can suit a backyard gathering but be awkward to carry on foot. A compact speaker is easier to pack, but may give up bass, maximum volume, or battery capacity. Check the exact IP rating for the exposure you expect, and treat any runtime as a rating or test result rather than a promise for every listening session. Volume and the audio being played affect battery life.
- Backyard or group use: Prioritize output and sound coverage; decide whether the size is practical for where you’ll store and move it.
- Beach, poolside, or campsite: Match the exact water and dust protection to the setting, and check the manufacturer’s care instructions for that exposure.
- Carrying on foot: Compare weight and carrying design, not just the product name or the word “portable.” The Xtreme 5, for example, is listed at 6.4 lb.
- Long sessions: Compare the stated or tested battery figure and its conditions. “Up to” and boost-mode figures are not equivalent to a guaranteed runtime at high volume.

| Model and use case | Protection | Battery information | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| JBL Boombox 4 — large gatherings and longer listening | IP68; RTINGS also describes it as floating. | RTINGS reports more than 40 hours on one charge; this is its reported finding, not a guaranteed runtime for every use. | Larger than some alternatives, but RTINGS cites deeper bass and higher loudness as benefits. |
| JBL Charge 6 — compact waterproof all-rounder | IP68, as listed by What Hi-Fi? | What Hi-Fi? lists 20 hours, or 28 hours with Playtime Boost; use affects battery life. | What Hi-Fi? praises clarity, soundstage, and build, but notes the body is chunkier than the slimmer Flip 6 and that more affordable models are available. |
| JBL Xtreme 5 — larger rugged portable speaker | IP68, as listed by TechRadar. | TechRadar lists 24 hours, or 28 hours using PlayTime Boost. | Listed at 6.4 lb. TechRadar cites strong bass and sturdy construction, with bulk, no hands-free call microphone, and battery life that is not class-leading as downsides. |
| Ultimate Ears EPICBOOM — premium waterproof option | RTINGS describes it as waterproof; an exact IP rating is not established in the cited guide information here. | RTINGS describes battery life of roughly 15 hours. | RTINGS places it in the upper mid-range tier and notes shorter battery life than its larger JBL top pick. Tom’s Guide also names it its top waterproof speaker and says it is not cheap. |
| Bose SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) — portable option | IP67, according to Tom’s Guide. | Tom’s Guide lists 12 hours. | RTINGS describes it as well built and notes somewhat more balanced sound than its featured alternative, alongside mono downmixing and shorter battery life. |
JBL Boombox 4: for a large space or longer sessions
RTINGS named the Boombox 4 its best outdoor speaker in a guide updated July 24, 2026. Its case for the pick is a combination of loudness, deeper bass, an IP68 rating, a floating design, and more than 40 hours on one charge. That makes it the most directly targeted option here for listeners who need sound to carry across a larger outdoor area or want a long reported runtime. Its larger size is the practical compromise: consider how far you’ll carry it and where it will live between outings.
JBL Charge 6: for a waterproof all-rounder
What Hi-Fi? names the Charge 6 its best waterproof speaker overall. Its listed specification is 40W and IP68, with a 20-hour battery figure and 28 hours when Playtime Boost is used. What Hi-Fi? praises its clarity, soundstage, and build. The thicker body may be less convenient if you specifically want a slim speaker, and the publication notes that less expensive JBL models exist. Its “best overall” label is What Hi-Fi?’s editorial judgment, not a universal verdict.
JBL Xtreme 5: for a rugged, higher-output portable
TechRadar’s waterproof-speaker guide, last updated July 1, 2026, names the Xtreme 5 best overall among its waterproof picks. It lists IP68, USB-C charging, 6.4 lb of weight, and battery life of 24 hours—or 28 with PlayTime Boost. TechRadar points to strong bass and sturdy construction, but also flags bulk and battery life that is not class-leading. It has no hands-free call microphone, so it is a poorer fit if taking calls through the speaker matters to you.

Ultimate Ears EPICBOOM: for a premium waterproof choice
RTINGS places the EPICBOOM in the upper mid-range tier and describes adaptive EQ and roughly 15 hours of battery life. That runtime is shorter than the more-than-40-hour figure RTINGS reports for its Boombox 4 pick. Tom’s Guide independently names the EPICBOOM its top waterproof speaker and identifies price as the main drawback. Consider it if you value its feature set and waterproof positioning enough to accept a higher-end purchase; the cited material does not establish an exact IP rating to compare with the IP68 models above.
Bose SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen): for a more portable option
The SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) is the compact choice in this group. Tom’s Guide lists an IP67 rating and 12 hours of battery life. RTINGS describes it as well built, with somewhat more balanced sound than the alternative featured in its guide, while noting mono downmixing and shorter battery life. It may suit someone who values carrying convenience more than the higher output and longer runtime associated with larger speakers. Keep the “2nd Gen” label in mind when checking specifications or shopping listings.
What IP67 and IP68 tell you—and what they don’t
An IP code describes protection against ingress. TechRadar and Tom’s Guide explain that the first digit concerns solids such as dust and the second concerns water; an X means that the relevant ingress type was not rated in that code. TechRadar gives IPX7 as an example: it indicates a water-submersion test to 1 meter for 30 minutes, while the X means dust ingress was not rated.

For the models listed here, the sources specify IP68 for the Boombox 4, Charge 6, and Xtreme 5, and IP67 for the SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen). The cited material describes the EPICBOOM as waterproof but does not establish its exact IP code. Do not treat these labels as interchangeable guarantees for every kind of exposure: an IP code alone does not answer every question about depth, duration, salt water, chlorinated water, or care after use. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific model, including any requirements for port covers and post-exposure care.

How to compare battery claims fairly
The figures in the table come from different publications and are not one uniform lab comparison. RTINGS reports more than 40 hours for the Boombox 4 and roughly 15 hours for the EPICBOOM; What Hi-Fi? lists 20 hours for the Charge 6, or 28 with Playtime Boost; TechRadar lists 24 hours for the Xtreme 5, or 28 with PlayTime Boost; and Tom’s Guide lists 12 hours for the SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen). These are reported findings or published specifications, not a prediction that each speaker will reach the same number under your conditions.
Boost-mode figures should stay distinct from standard listed figures, and a test result should not be silently combined with a manufacturer-style rating as though both were measured the same way. Actual runtime depends on use, including volume and audio content. If a full day away from power is essential, favor a generous stated figure but leave a margin rather than planning around the maximum.

Why review guides name different winners
These guides answer slightly different questions. RTINGS’ July 24, 2026 outdoor guide selects the Boombox 4; What Hi-Fi?’s waterproof guide selects the Charge 6 overall; and TechRadar’s waterproof guide, updated July 1, 2026, selects the Xtreme 5 overall. Tom’s Guide chooses the EPICBOOM as its top waterproof speaker. Those are editorial choices made within each guide’s own scope, not a shared test or a single objective ranking.
RTINGS says personal taste, preference, and listening habits affect speaker choice. It also states that it has tested over 190 speakers in 2026; that figure is RTINGS’ stated total, not a count of outdoor-only speakers or a market-wide tally. To make your own choice, weigh the setting, desired loudness and coverage, exact protection rating, runtime, carrying burden, and local price together. Check current local pricing and specifications before buying, since guide listings and product details can change.
