Sarah Matthews’s hands-on review for Expert Reviews, updated 21 September 2026, praises its comfort and app, but flags the UK price, recurring membership, imperfect activity detection and lack of smartwatch features. Its appeal is clearest if you value an unobtrusive form factor; it is a less obvious buy if you mainly want workout controls, GPS or safety functions.
What the Oura Ring 5 does
Oura Ring 5 is a screen-free wearable focused on health, recovery and sleep tracking. The Expert Reviews account says it tracks heart rate, heart-rate variability (HRV), blood oxygen, VO2 Max, activity, calories, steps, temperature, respiratory rate and sleep. The app turns those measurements into insights around heart health, stress, recovery, sleep and readiness.

The review also describes live activity tracking, later activity entry, automatic activity detection, Strava data transfer, lab-result uploads, expanded menopause tracking and the option to add birth-control information. These functions make the app more than a nightly sleep log, though they do not turn the ring into a full smartwatch.

Expert Reviews listed UK prices of £399 for black and silver finishes and £499 for gold, brushed silver, rose gold and stealth matte black in its September 2026 review. Those were reviewed prices, not a live price check. The review put each tier £50 above Ring 4’s launch price for the equivalent base or premium category.

According to the review, membership unlocks the full set of health insights and data points. Without it, users see basic readiness, sleep and activity scores. That means the hardware price is not the whole cost for someone who wants the broader app experience; check Oura’s current UK membership terms before buying.
The review says the optional charging case can hold a month’s worth of charge and may suit frequent off-grid travel. Confirm current price and compatibility with Ring 5 before purchase.

Fit, comfort and battery
Expert Reviews describes the ring as titanium, weighing 2–2.69 g, with an IP68 rating, and says it is 40% smaller than its predecessor. The review reports eight sizes, from 6 through 13—one fewer than Ring 4—which could make fit harder for people with especially thin fingers. These are specifications reported by the review; check the maker’s current size and product information before ordering.

Expert Reviews reports a claimed battery life of six to nine days depending on ring size, with a full charge taking 80 minutes. The article says a size-specific USB-C charger and dock are included. Battery life is a product claim reported by the review, not an independently verified test result.
Sleep tracking: useful signals, not a diagnosis
Oura’s company-authored explanation says sleep tracking combines photoplethysmography (PPG), temperature sensors and motion sensors. It lists heart rate, HRV, respiratory rate, body-temperature trends and movement among the signals used. This describes the manufacturer’s approach; it is not independent verification of the ring’s accuracy. Oura’s sleep-measurement and validation explanation also lists sleep-staging studies from Brigham and Women’s Hospital (2024), the National University of Singapore (2022 and 2023), the University of Tokyo (2024) and MDPI Sensors (2021), but the blog’s list alone does not establish the studies’ results.

In her hands-on review, Matthews compared sleep tracking with a Garmin smartwatch and heart-rate readings with a separate monitor. Those are reviewer observations, not a controlled clinical or laboratory assessment, and the review does not establish a performance percentage. Treat the ring’s trends and scores as wellness information rather than a medical diagnosis.

Where workout tracking falls short
The ring has no built-in GPS. For pace and distance while running or cycling, the review says it relies on the phone for location. It also reports no ECG, fall safety alerts or live activity feedback of the kind available on some smartwatches.

Matthews found automatic activity detection imperfect, including phantom activity, and noted the inconvenience of having to remember to stop a live-tracked workout. If precise workout controls, location independent of a phone, or safety features are a priority, a smartwatch may be a better fit.
Should Ring 3 or Ring 4 owners upgrade?
Expert Reviews says Ring 5’s tracking features are also available on Ring 3 and Ring 4. The reviewer’s reasons to consider upgrading are the smaller size, claimed tracking-accuracy improvements and marginally longer battery life. The review’s two-month account includes personal comparison observations, not independent proof of an across-the-board accuracy gain. For an existing owner, weigh those hardware changes against the cost of replacement rather than expecting a new set of core tracking features.
Who should buy the Oura Ring 5?
- Consider it if you want a discreet ring for sleep and health trends, value a screen-free wearable, and are comfortable with both the upfront price and membership cost for full insights.
- Look elsewhere if your main needs are on-device workout feedback, built-in GPS, ECG or fall alerts, or if you do not want an ongoing subscription for expanded app data.
- If you already own Ring 3 or 4, compare the smaller form factor and reported hardware refinements with the fact that the review says the tracking feature set is shared across generations.
Expert Reviews names Ultrahuman, RingConn and Samsung Galaxy Ring as alternatives without subscription fees, but its review does not provide a current, like-for-like model, price or performance comparison. Verify the current model, regional availability and terms before comparing them.
