Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAn empty-building Wi-Fi survey is not proof that a warehouse will have reliable coverage once its racks are stocked. Stored goods can change radio-frequency (RF) propagation, so the network should be checked under representative full-stock conditions before you treat the design as validated. Cisco explicitly recommends full-stock coverage checks in its Catalyst 9115 and 9117 deployment guide.
Why an empty warehouse can give a misleading survey
Wi-Fi signals do not travel through every warehouse environment in the same way. Racking and the materials stored on it can alter RF coverage, so the pattern measured in an empty building may not match the pattern after inventory arrives. Cisco’s warehouse guidance says coverage checks should be done at “full stock” levels because stored material can change coverage and create a loss of uniformity.

An empty-site survey is still useful as a baseline or planning input. It simply does not establish that the completed, stocked operation meets its coverage needs. A Cisco Community discussion describes a similar situation: a survey was conducted while the warehouse was being built and empty. That is a useful example of the problem, not proof of how any particular warehouse will perform.

Before repeating measurements, define the actual service requirements. A warehouse Wi-Fi design should be judged against the applications, clients, operating areas, and performance tolerances it must support—not against a heat map alone. Cisco’s WLAN site-survey guidelines identify requirements gathering as part of survey planning.

- List the production client devices, such as handheld scanners or voice devices. Different radios and antennas can have different capabilities.
- Identify the applications those clients run and the performance they require.
- Mark where workers and equipment need service: aisles, workstations, loading or staging areas, and the paths between them.
- Set the minimum signal, signal-to-noise, and performance requirements appropriate to those clients and applications.
There is no single warehouse threshold established by the cited guidance for every client and application. Apply requirements that fit the actual devices and use case rather than treating a number from another WLAN context as universal.
How to validate the network after the racks are stocked
- Recreate the operating condition. Survey when the warehouse is stocked in a representative way, focusing on the areas and travel paths where service is required. Cisco’s deployment guide specifically calls for full-stock coverage checks.
- Use representative clients and survey equipment. Make sure the measurement method reasonably reflects the production devices. Cisco warns that an adapter with greater receiver sensitivity or a better antenna can report coverage that weaker production clients will not experience.
- Review field measurements and the route taken. A predictive heat map is a model, not a field measurement. Check that the survey covered relevant walking paths and recorded sufficient data points. Cisco’s survey guidance cautions that unmeasured areas are not adequately validated.
- Compare results with the agreed requirements. Look for weak or inconsistent service in the aisles and work areas, then assess it against the selected client and application needs.
- Revise placement from the evidence. Have a qualified WLAN practitioner evaluate access-point and antenna placement using the stocked-condition measurements, aisle geometry, rack height, and mounting constraints.
Predictive design and field validation answer different questions
A predictive survey uses software models and typically does not involve field measurements. It can help plan a network before a site is built or support initial budgeting, but it cannot confirm how the installed system behaves amid actual stock, racks, and operating conditions.

- Cloud Access: Remote Cloud access and Omada app brings centralized cloud management of the whole network at different sites-all controlled from a single interface anywhere, anytime
- SDN Compatibility: For SDN usage, make sure your devices/controllers are either equipped with or can be upgraded to SDN version. SDN controllers work only with SDN Access Points, Switches and Gateways. Non-SDN controllers work only with non-SDN APs
Active or passive field survey approaches collect measurements from the real environment. For a warehouse surveyed while empty, the practical next step is not to discard all prior planning automatically; it is to validate the installed or proposed design in representative stocked conditions and fill gaps in the field evidence.
Choosing an antenna approach is site-specific
Cisco’s warehouse deployment guide discusses directional patch antennas aimed down aisles and low-gain omnidirectional antennas as possible approaches. Neither is a universal winner. The right choice depends on the facility layout and measured behavior, as well as client requirements and installation constraints.

When comparing candidate designs, examine their measured coverage in stocked aisles and work locations, fit to the actual client radios and applications, aisle geometry and rack height, mounting options, and observed coverage or interference behavior. Also distinguish a predictive plan from a result validated in the field. The available guidance does not prescribe a single antenna configuration or access-point model for every warehouse.

The cited Cisco guidance establishes the need to check warehouse coverage at full-stock levels and provides survey-planning and measurement principles. It does not identify your inventory materials, client models, application thresholds, layout, or current installation. Those details require site-specific validation, so the empty survey alone cannot diagnose whether the existing network needs new access points, different antennas, or only a revised placement.
