For Chrome, use the tab switcher to close tabs; use Recents to dismiss the app; use Android Settings to force-stop an unresponsive app. These actions are different.
Close one browser tab in Chrome

Open Chrome and tap the tab switcher beside the address bar.

Tap the close icon on the tab you want to remove. You can also swipe the tab away.

Close all Chrome tabs

Open Chrome’s tab switcher.

Tap More, then tap Close all tabs.
Dismiss the browser from Recents
This removes the browser’s app card from the recent-apps view. It is not the same as closing browser tabs.

With gesture navigation, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold, then release to open Recents.

Swipe up on the Chrome app card to dismiss it.
Google notes that Android manages memory and battery automatically, so you do not need to dismiss apps routinely for those reasons. Navigation gestures and labels can vary by device. See Google’s instructions for finding, opening, and closing apps and Android navigation guidance.

Force-stop Chrome if it is frozen
Use force stop only when the browser is not responding; ordinary tab closing or dismissing the app is usually enough when it is working normally.

Open Settings > Apps > See all apps > Chrome.

Tap Force stop, then tap OK to confirm.
Android settings paths and labels can differ by phone. If you do not see the same options, search Settings for “Apps” or check your phone manufacturer’s help. Google’s troubleshooting steps for a frozen or unresponsive Android device describe when to close or force-stop an app. If Chrome crashes or will not open, Chrome’s troubleshooting guide also recommends closing other tabs or apps and describes restarting Chrome from the app switcher.
