Our FAQPage Node and Visible FAQ Come From the Same Array

Our FAQ questions and answers come from one array that drives both the visible page and its FAQPage JSON-LD—reducing drift without promising Google rich results.

Our FAQ and its FAQPage JSON-LD come from the same data array. That is the maintainability rule we enforce: the questions and answers shown to readers are also the source for the structured data, so an edit to one cannot silently leave the other behind.

It is an implementation rule, not a claim that Google requires one particular code architecture. Structured data still has to describe content readers can see, and even correct markup does not guarantee a search enhancement.

Keep the visible FAQ and FAQPage data in sync

In our implementation, each FAQ entry is stored once in an entries array. The page uses that array to render its visible definition list, then passes the same value to faqLd(entries) to build the FAQPage JSON-LD. There is no separately maintained list of schema questions to drift out of date.

The practical test for every field is not only whether its JSON-LD is valid. As Daniel Pertu puts it: “If you write JSON-LD by hand, the question to ask of every field is not "is this valid" but "what does the page have to show for this to be true, and what stops the two drifting apart next quarter".”

What the pattern prevents

  • Removing a question from the visible FAQ also removes its corresponding Question node.
  • Editing an answer updates both the displayed answer and the structured-data value.
  • The implementation has one source of truth to review when FAQ content changes.

This is a way to reduce content drift, not evidence that a shared array improves rankings or causes Google to show a rich result.

Use one page-level FAQPage node for multiple FAQ blocks

FAQPage describes FAQ content on a page. If a page has several visible FAQ blocks, our approach combines their arrays and lets one block emit the page-level node, rather than treating each block as a separate page-level FAQPage.

The implementation enables emitStructuredData by default for the usual single-block case. When there are multiple blocks, combine their entries and designate one emitter so the page does not emit duplicate page-level nodes.

Apply the same source-of-truth idea selectively

The array pattern is one instance of a broader design choice: derive markup from the content that actually renders, and only emit a schema type when the page supports its claims.

HowTo steps

For a genuine procedure, derive HowTo steps from the guide’s rendered RUNNING_ORDER section rather than typing a second sequence into JSON-LD. The example guide reports eight visible steps and eight HowToStep nodes. An ideas list is not a procedure and should not be labeled HowTo merely because it can be arranged as bullets.

Article fields

Article markup is opt-in. In the implementation, its headline and description come from the content registry node. For evergreen pages revised in place, the author uses that node’s update date for both datePublished and dateModified, explaining that choice as a property of this site’s publishing model. It should not be copied blindly to pages with a different publication history. The implementation also does not invent a named human author just to fill a schema field.

BreadcrumbList

The breadcrumb data comes from breadcrumbFor(path), the same function used by the visible breadcrumb component. If the trail has fewer than two items, the function returns no BreadcrumbList node rather than emitting an unhelpful or unsupported breadcrumb.

What Google’s FAQ policy means for this code

Google’s structured data guidelines say markup should represent content visible to readers. Hidden, irrelevant, or misleading structured data can make a page ineligible for a rich result. Google supports JSON-LD, Microdata, and RDFa, and recommends JSON-LD; valid markup nevertheless does not guarantee that a rich result will appear.

For FAQ markup specifically, Google’s August 2023 Search Central announcement said FAQ rich results would be shown regularly only for well-known, authoritative government and health websites. Google said sites did not need to proactively remove unused FAQ markup, while also noting that unused markup would have no visible Search effects. An ordinary editorial or commercial site should therefore treat FAQPage as an accurate description of its content, not as a way to secure an FAQ search enhancement.

Do not confuse FAQPage with QAPage

A site-written FAQ with multiple questions is not a Q&A forum. Google’s QAPage documentation defines that type for a page centered on one question with answers users can submit. It explicitly says not to use QAPage for FAQ pages or pages containing multiple questions.

What the implementation counts show

Daniel Pertu’s October 2026 article reports that the shared-data approach is used across 69 content pages. On the example FAQ page, the author reports 16 rendered questions and 16 Question nodes; on the hosting-a-quiz guide, eight visible steps correspond to eight HowToStep nodes. These are the author’s own implementation counts, not independent audits or industry statistics.

The useful takeaway is architectural: make every structured-data claim traceable to visible page content, ideally by deriving both from the same content source. Google’s policy sets the accuracy bar; the shared-array rule is how this implementation works to meet it.
