OTG is the familiar name for a phone’s ability to act as a USB host: it can power and communicate with compatible peripherals such as a flash drive, keyboard, mouse, camera, or game controller. The connector and an adapter alone do not establish compatibility—check that your exact phone model supports USB host mode and that the accessory’s connector, software requirements, and power needs are suitable.
What OTG means on a phone
Android’s technical term for the function commonly called OTG is USB host mode. In this mode, the phone takes the host role, supplies power to the USB bus, and identifies connected USB devices. Android lists digital cameras, keyboards, mice, and game controllers as examples.

Check the specifications or support information for the exact handset model and look for USB host mode or OTG support. Do not infer support from a USB-C port, an adapter that fits, or the Android version alone: host capability ultimately depends on the phone’s hardware.

The Android 15 Compatibility Definition requires implementations with a port that supports host mode to implement Android’s USB host API, declare the android.hardware.usb.host feature, and support standard USB peripherals. This requirement applies to devices in that category; it does not mean every phone has host-capable hardware.
Which OTG adapter do you need?
First match the connectors at both ends, then check host support separately. For example, a phone with a USB-C port connecting to a peripheral with a USB-A plug may need a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter with a USB-C plug and USB-A socket. Other connector combinations require a different fit.

- Peripheral: Identify its connector and any required cable, app, or protocol.
- Power: Consider whether the device draws more power than the phone can provide.
An adapter only bridges connector types; it cannot add host capability or guarantee that the connected device will work.

- Verify host support. Check the exact phone model’s manufacturer specifications or support page for USB host mode or OTG.
- Check the connection. Match the phone port, peripheral connector, and any adapter or cable required.
- Start with a simple, low-power peripheral. Connect it and look for a system prompt or recognition in a suitable file manager or device app.
- Use the right app or protocol. Follow the peripheral maker’s instructions if the device needs a specific Android app or supported protocol.
- Disconnect safely. Follow the phone’s or app’s instructions for removing storage or other peripherals.
What can you connect—and what might not work?
USB host mode can support different tasks, including file access, camera connections, input, and game control, but the phone must support the host connection and the particular peripheral. The accessory may also need an app or protocol the phone supports. A supported host connection does not promise that every USB drive, file system, camera, keyboard, mouse, or controller will work.

For storage, check the phone’s documentation for supported drive formats and file-management options. For a camera or controller, check both the phone and peripheral requirements. Android’s examples describe device categories, not a guarantee for every model or accessory.

If the phone does not detect the device
- Reconfirm host support: Make sure the exact handset model supports USB host mode; a working physical connection is not proof.
- Check the connection: Reseat the plugs and confirm the adapter or cable matches both connector types and works properly.
- Check software compatibility: Try the required app or confirm the peripheral’s protocol and storage format are supported.
- Consider power needs: A peripheral may draw more power than the phone can provide. A powered hub may be an option when suitable for the phone and setup, but compatibility and charging behavior are not guaranteed.
