1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAn AI agent’s “flight recorder” is a structured trace of the model requests, tool calls, responses, and errors an application actually captured. It can help you reconstruct the run and find where behavior went wrong—but it cannot reveal a complete hidden thought process or prove why a model chose an action.
What an agent flight recorder can—and cannot—tell you
When an agent behaves unexpectedly, the useful debugging question is not just “What did the model think?” It is “What inputs and outputs did the application record, in what order, and what happened at each step?” A trace answers that second question when the application is instrumented to capture the relevant events.

Langfuse describes application tracing as structured logs that can capture the prompt sent to a model, its response, token usage, latency, and intervening tool or retrieval steps. That is a practical baseline for a flight recorder. Langfuse’s observability documentation also notes that generative AI systems are inherently non-deterministic, which makes retaining the context and sequence of a run useful when investigating differences between attempts.

It shows only what your instrumentation captured. It may reveal, for example, that a tool returned an error, that the application passed an unexpected result back to the model, or that a later request differed from an earlier one. It does not establish the model’s private rationale for choosing that sequence.

What to record in a useful trace
Represent a run as linked events rather than one large, unstructured text log. Each event should be attributable to a run and, where relevant, to its parent operation. This makes the order of model and tool activity inspectable without pretending that every event is an independent conversation.
| Field | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Trace or run identifier | Connects events belonging to one execution. |
| Timestamp and duration | Shows sequence and helps locate delays. |
| Parent-child relationship | Shows which model request, agent step, or other operation led to a tool call or response. |
| Inputs and outputs | Lets you inspect the prompt or tool input sent and the response returned, to the extent your instrumentation captures them. |
| Status and error details | Distinguishes successful operations from failures and gives the investigation a concrete point to follow. |
| Context metadata | Recommended design addition: attach application version, environment, or other identifiers needed to compare runs and diagnose deployment-specific behavior. |
The first five fields describe a useful trace structure consistent with documented tracing and nested observations; metadata such as application version and environment is an implementation recommendation, not a claim about a particular recorder. Langfuse documents SDK instrumentation, and its documentation describes propagating attributes across services. See its instrumentation guide for its own SDK approach.

Be deliberate about payload capture. Prompts, model responses, and tool inputs can contain sensitive or confidential information. Decide which fields to record, where those records go, and who can access them before enabling broad capture in production. A trace is only useful if it is both interpretable and appropriate to retain.
How to use traces when a run misbehaves
- Emit records as the run happens. Instrument the application’s model requests and tool operations so the record reflects actual inputs, outputs, timings, and failures—not a reconstruction written from memory afterward.
- Connect related events. Give each run an identifier and preserve parent-child links between the overall execution and its model, retrieval, or tool steps. If one user interaction spans several traces, group them under a session where your tooling supports it.
- Inspect the sequence around the failure. Start with the first unexpected output or error, then examine the inputs and results immediately before it. Check whether a tool returned an error, whether the application passed the result onward as intended, and whether the model’s next request reflects the context your application supplied.
- Compare repeated runs. When a behavior is intermittent, compare recorded sequences rather than assuming two attempts followed identical paths. Differences in captured inputs, tool results, or timing can help narrow down where to investigate.
- Add evaluation when the question is quality. A trace can show what happened; it does not decide whether an answer was correct or an action acceptable. Use explicit evaluations, scores, or human feedback for that judgment, and connect those assessments to the run where possible.
Langfuse sessions group traces and support replaying an interaction for debugging or analysis; its sessions documentation explains that workflow. Session replay can help recover the recorded interaction, but replay should not be mistaken for a guarantee that a non-deterministic agent will produce the same outcome again.

Build a recorder or adopt an observability service?
A custom recorder gives a team control over its event model and data flow, but the team must build and maintain the instrumentation, storage, inspection, and analysis features it needs. Existing services provide parts of that stack. Choose by fit and operational constraints rather than assuming every product captures the same data or works the same way.
| Decision area | What to check | Documented options |
|---|---|---|
| Instrumentation fit | Can you instrument your framework and custom code? Are the SDK languages and integrations you need available? | Langfuse documents SDK instrumentation. LangSmith describes agent tracing and observability features. See Langfuse instrumentation and LangSmith observability. |
| Trace usability | Can you follow nested steps, find related runs, and inspect multi-trace interactions? | Langfuse documents sessions for grouping traces and replaying interactions. LangSmith describes agent tracing. See Langfuse sessions and LangSmith observability. |
| Evaluation and monitoring | Do you need scoring, latency or cost monitoring, alerts, online evaluations, or trajectory analysis as well as traces? | Langfuse’s overview covers token usage and latency, while LangSmith describes evaluations, cost tracking, trajectory monitoring, and alerts. Consult each product’s current documentation for scope: Langfuse overview and LangSmith observability. |
| Deployment and data handling | Where are traces sent and stored? Which payloads are captured? Which deployment modes and configurations meet your requirements? | LangSmith documents data-plane arrangements that differ by deployment mode. Its data plane documentation is the relevant starting point; confirm current configuration, terms, privacy, and retention details directly. |
| Operational overhead | What will your team still need to instrument, operate, secure, and maintain? | This is a team-specific comparison, not a measured product result. Account for your required integrations, data controls, and ongoing maintenance before deciding. |
OpenTelemetry-compatible instrumentation is another category to consider if you want traces to fit a broader telemetry approach. The right choice depends on your application and data-handling needs; verify current product documentation and configuration rather than assuming deployment modes or retention policies are interchangeable.

Flight-recorder records are not automatically tamper-proof
A trace helps with debugging only to the extent that records are captured, retained, and trustworthy for the question at hand. Ordinary application tracing should not be described as tamper-proof auditing. A September 2026 arXiv paper titled “Agent Flight Recorder: Tamper-Evident Audit Trails with On-Chain Anchoring for Long-Horizon Tool-Using Agents” explores stronger audit goals. Its existence points to a research direction; it is not evidence that routine tracing products provide tamper-evident or on-chain records.
