Manyfold can make a large 3D-print model library easier to browse and organize with tags, collections, folder management, previews, and links between remixes or alternate-format files. But its current official feature page lists built-in version control as a later planned feature, not an available revision-history tool. If you need to know exactly which STL changed, keep explicit revision copies or use a versioned folder workflow rather than assuming a new upload records the old model.
What Manyfold does for a 3D-print library
Manyfold is open-source, self-hosted software for managing collections of 3D models, particularly files used for 3D printing. Its purpose is to make a collection more navigable and shareable than a pile of files and folders alone. The project describes itself on its repository as a self-hosted model-collection manager.

In practice, it combines a catalog with tools for handling the files behind each model. The Manyfold homepage describes browsing and categorizing models, adding metadata, sharing, and tidying files on disk. Its feature page lists interactive previews; tags, creators, likes, lists, and collections; folder management; model relationships; multiuser permissions; federation and social features; a REST API; external-site imports; direct-print integrations; and plugins.

That combination is useful when you need to answer two different questions: “Where is the model I want?” and “What files or related designs belong with it?” It does not by itself establish that each edit is preserved as a historical revision.

How to make a large collection easier to search
Use tags and metadata for retrieval
Tags let you group models by criteria that matter to your work, such as intended use or project. Creator information and other metadata can distinguish similar designs. The homepage also describes recording the model’s original source, notes, and supported or unsupported status. A consistent naming and tagging scheme pays off when you return to a model months later or share the library with other people.
Use collections for projects and curated groups
Collections provide another way to gather models without relying solely on the underlying folder structure. For example, a project collection can bring together the parts you need for one build, while tags can describe properties that cut across multiple projects. Manyfold’s feature page now lists multiple-collection support; exact behavior can depend on the installed release.

Keep folders and model relationships meaningful
Manyfold lists folder-structure management as an available feature. It can also link models as remixes and connect files in different formats. Those relationships help explain how designs relate—for example, which model is a remix or which files are alternate formats—rather than treating every file as an unrelated entry.

Interactive previews can make visual identification faster. The feature page also says Manyfold can identify issues such as inefficient formats or missing metadata. These tools help surface information and potential problems; they should not be treated as proof that a model is printable or that a particular file is the correct revision for a job.

Can Manyfold track different versions of an STL?
Not as a built-in historical version-control feature according to the current official roadmap. Manyfold’s features and roadmap places “Version control” in the “Later” category, with a Q4 2026 estimate for storing model changes over time. The page cautions that roadmap dates are estimates and may change. That is a planned feature, not confirmation that deployed versions already retain revision history.
Consequently, uploading a modified STL should not be assumed to preserve the earlier file as a revision. The uploading guide documents creating models by uploading compressed archives or individual supported 3D files; it does not say that uploading creates a historical version of an existing model.

A practical revision workflow today
Until version control is available in the version you run, preserve revisions explicitly. Keep each meaningful revision as a distinct file or archive, use clear filenames, and record the change in notes or other metadata. You can use collections or folders to group a project’s related files, and model relationships to identify remixes or alternate formats. These practices make revision distinctions visible, but they are organizational conventions—not automatic version history.

- Keep the original source and change notes with the model so you can identify where it came from and what changed.
- Before replacing or removing a file, verify that the previous revision is retained where you expect it.
- Check the roadmap and release notes for the version you deploy before relying on a newly announced revision feature.
Uploading models and checking what your deployment supports
The upload manual says you can upload an archive or an individual supported 3D file and create models from them. This is an ingestion route for getting content into the library; it is not a guarantee that every file format is supported or that replacement uploads behave like version control.

Manyfold continues to evolve. Its news and release notes describe changes to multiple collections, file handling, and previews. Consult the documentation and release information that match your deployed version before following version-specific instructions or assuming a feature is present. The homepage displays the project’s version, but the software you host may not be on the latest release.
Who should use Manyfold for model organization?
Manyfold is a fit for people who want a self-hosted catalog for 3D models and value metadata, tags, collections, folder organization, previews, sharing, and links between related designs. Its feature page also lists multiuser access and permissions, imports from external model sites, direct-print integrations, an API, and plugins, which may matter for more involved libraries.
If your primary requirement is automatic, auditable history of every STL change, treat that as a separate requirement and confirm it is available in your installed release before moving your workflow. The official roadmap currently describes version control as planned for later. Manyfold can organize files and make relationships easier to understand, but that is not the same as preserving prior revisions automatically.
