Before writing, check that quotations, paraphrases and factual claims can all be traced back to their sources.
What should your notes help you do?
Your notes should make it easy to answer three questions: What does this source say? Where can I find that information again? How does it help answer my research question? Start by writing the question at the top of your document, notebook or project. It gives you a practical test for deciding what to save and what to leave out.

Research methods can vary with the assignment. Cornell University Library puts it plainly: “Although there is no single ‘right’ way to conduct research, certain methods and skills can make your research efforts more efficient and effective.” Cornell University Library’s research guidance recommends beginning with a question and adapting the approach to the project.
How do you organise research notes before drafting?

Write the research question
Put the question your article, essay or report must answer somewhere visible. Use it to shape search terms and decide whether a finding belongs in your notes. Revisit the question if your reading reveals that it needs to be narrowed or clarified.

Record the source as soon as you save evidence
Keep the source details with the material you collect, rather than relying on a separate list you may struggle to match up later. Record the author or organisation, title, publication details, URL or DOI where relevant, and a locator such as page, section or timestamp.
A citation manager can help organise and retrieve references and, when needed, work with a word processor to create citations and bibliographies. Cornell’s citation-management guide describes these uses and identifies Zotero as free, open-source citation-management software.

Separate source material from your interpretation
Label exact wording as a quotation and preserve it accurately. Mark paraphrases and summaries as such, then add your own brief note about what the material means for your question. Cornell’s note-taking guidance recommends recording questions and reactions as well as information drawn from sources.

Build an evidence chart
A simple chart makes the link between a source and a possible point in your draft visible. Include the source identity, the relevant evidence, where to find it, and your explanation of its usefulness.

Group evidence by the points the draft needs to make
Review the chart for recurring themes, useful disagreements and claims that lack support. Group related evidence under provisional section points, then arrange those points in the clearest order for a reader. This is an editorial way to use an evidence chart; it is not a claim that one grouping method has been proven superior.

Make a short outline and check its support
Write the intended claim or question for each section and place the supporting evidence beside it. If a paragraph depends on a factual claim for which you have no source, return to the research or qualify the claim. Before drafting, confirm that quotations are exact, paraphrases remain tied to their sources, and each source can be found again. Cornell Library notes that citations should allow readers to locate the sources used.

Which note-taking format should you use?
Choose a format based on the size of the project, how you need to retrieve or rearrange evidence, whether you are working with others, and whether you need formatted citations. The cited guidance describes useful options, but does not establish a controlled, head-to-head winner.

Should you write notes by hand or type them?
Choose the method that lets you capture and retrieve evidence reliably. Cornell’s note-taking guide mentions evidence favouring print for recall, but the material available there does not identify the underlying study or give a statistic. It therefore does not support a quantified claim that handwriting or typing is more effective for organising research notes.
Whichever method you use, preserve the distinction between a source’s words and your own, and keep the source details and locator attached to the note.

- Are direct quotations clearly marked and exact, and are paraphrases labelled?
- Have you added your own explanation of how the evidence relates to the question?
- Does every planned factual claim have supporting evidence, or a clear qualification?
- Can you arrange the evidence into section points that make sense to a reader?
