Backordered usually means an item is temporarily out of stock and the retailer expects to ship it when stock returns. On hold is broader: the retailer may be waiting for a payment or billing issue to be resolved, checking information, or dealing with a stock delay. The labels can overlap, and retailers do not use one universal status dictionary, so check the order details for the reason and any action requested.
What each order status usually means
Backordered: waiting for stock
A backorder is generally an availability issue. Target and Nintendo describe a backordered item as currently unavailable and due to ship when it is back in stock. The order may remain open while the retailer waits for replenishment, but the status alone does not establish a firm restock or delivery date.
On hold: processing has paused
An on-hold status can cover several kinds of delay. Office Depot lists card authorization problems, billing-address errors, verification, and backordered items among possible reasons for a held order. The label does not, by itself, tell you whether the issue is stock, payment, or something else.
How the statuses differ

These are common patterns, not universal definitions. For example, LEGO lists backordered and waiting-for-new-stock statuses separately from a customer-service status used when more information is needed. A retailer’s own order page is the best guide to what its label means.

What to do when you see either status
- Open the retailer’s order details. Look for which item is affected and whether the page gives a reason, estimated availability, or a next-update date.
- Check for a message or request. Look for a payment-declined notice, a request to update payment or billing information, or a request for verification.
- Follow the instruction shown for that order. For example, GameStop says customers can address a payment-declined hold by updating their payment details. Wyze directs customers to order history and item status for more information.
- Contact the retailer if the reason or next step is unclear. Give support your order number and ask whether the delay is due to stock, payment, verification, or another issue, and whether you need to act.
Dates, charges, and cancellation rules are retailer-specific
Neither status guarantees a particular shipping date, charge date, or cancellation window. Retailers publish different policies: Nintendo gives its own processing estimate, Crunchyroll explains its own charge timing, and Amway describes its own expected-availability estimates and cancellation rules. Treat such details as applying only to that retailer and order, and rely on the current order page or policy rather than assuming another store follows the same rules.
