To validate a GTIN, check its format and check digit, look it up in Verified by GS1, then compare the available registry details with the product and each store’s listing. These checks answer different questions: a valid check digit shows structural plausibility, a registry result can identify the assigning party and provide product data if available, and an attribute comparison helps determine whether listings actually describe the same trade item.
What each GTIN check can—and cannot—tell you
A GTIN identifies a trade item. Barcode lines are a machine-readable carrier for the number; they are not the identifier itself. GS1 explains that GTIN digits include information related to the licensing Member Organisation, the applying entity and item number, along with a check digit used to verify structure. - Format and check-digit validation: tells you whether the value is structurally plausible.
- Verified by GS1 lookup: checks the value against GS1 data and can return the assigning party and product details when available.
- Attribute comparison: checks whether a registry result, supplier information and store records agree about the item.
None of these alone proves that a product is genuine, currently available, or accurately described on every store. In particular, a mathematically correct check digit is not proof that GS1 assigned the number or that it belongs to the product in front of you.

- Preserve and normalize the value. Keep leading zeroes. Remove only presentation characters that your input process permits, and record where the number came from. Do not silently convert it to an integer or assume a number supplied by a seller is a GS1-assigned GTIN.
- Check the expected GTIN format and check digit. Use the current GS1 specification for the format and arithmetic rules applicable to the identifier. The GS1 General Specifications, Release 24.0, set out GTIN management and data-alignment requirements. If implementing validation in software, consult the applicable normative check-digit section directly rather than relying on a hand-copied formula.
- Search Verified by GS1. Enter the number in the service. GS1 says a result includes at least the assigning company, organisation or person; product data is returned if available. A number that is not a GS1 GTIN or is not found produces an explanatory message. GS1’s portal states a maximum of 30 free queries per user per day; the limit may change, so check the service guidance for current terms. Advanced querying is available through the local GS1 Member Organisation.
- Compare the result with trusted item data and store records. Check the brand owner or supplier source alongside each listing, and keep identity attributes separate from changing offer details.
- Route material conflicts for review. Do not automatically merge records when assignment, brand, variant or pack data disagrees. Preserve the conflicting values and their sources so a person can resolve them.
If you routinely capture barcodes from physical products, a USB barcode scanner can speed up data entry. It reads the identifier; it does not check GS1 assignment or resolve conflicting product records. Occasional checks can be done by entering the number manually.

What to compare when matching records across stores
Use an exact normalized GTIN match as a strong link between records, not as the only test. GS1’s General Specifications emphasize accurate, aligned item-characteristic data. The following comparison is practical guidance based on that principle, not a universal matching algorithm published by GS1.

Keep both the original source values and normalized comparison values. Normalization makes comparisons easier; retaining originals makes it possible to investigate whether a mismatch came from spelling, a data transformation or a genuinely different product.

How to handle mismatches and GTIN changes
A registry hit is not a complete product-data audit. GS1’s Data Quality Framework includes physical inspection of product attributes, while its standard calls for accurate, up-to-date data alignment. For consequential catalog decisions, compare records with the actual product or authoritative brand-owner or supplier data where possible.

- Check-digit failure: treat the input as structurally invalid; recheck the captured or transcribed digits, including any leading zeroes.
- No Verified by GS1 result: do not interpret this as a confirmed product identity. Recheck the value and its source, then contact the supplier or relevant GS1 Member Organisation if assignment needs investigation.
- Assignment or brand conflict: keep records separate pending review rather than merging on description alone.
- Variant, content or pack conflict: confirm whether the records refer to different trade items or whether one source is inaccurate.
- Offer-only difference: a different seller, price, stock status or URL does not by itself indicate a different product.
GTIN assignment and a retailer’s listing decision are separate matters. A product change that requires a new GTIN under GS1’s GTIN Management rules does not automatically require a retailer to create a new listing; GS1 treats listing as a commercial process distinct from GTIN management. Resolve identifier and product-identity questions separately from a store’s catalog policy.

When GS1’s data standards help
For a one-off check, the lookup-and-compare workflow is usually enough. Teams managing catalogs across channels can use the GS1 Global Data Model as a reference for harmonizing product content and the Data Quality Framework for data-management practices, self-assessment and physical attribute inspection. These are enterprise references, not prerequisites for an individual lookup.
