Optical and stereo RCA carry audio in different forms: optical sends digital audio as light, while red-and-white RCA carries analog left and right channels. Neither is automatically better sounding. The right choice depends on the ports and audio formats your devices support, and on which component you want to handle digital-to-analog conversion.
First, identify which RCA connection you mean
Red-and-white RCA jacks carry two-channel analog audio: one channel for the left speaker and one for the right. A single RCA-style jack may instead be a digital coaxial S/PDIF connection. It carries digital audio, not stereo analog, so the connector shape alone does not identify the signal. Sony explains the difference between optical and digital coaxial connections, and Philips describes S/PDIF and connection types.

How the connections differ
| Connection | Signal and typical port | Where digital-to-analog conversion happens |
|---|---|---|
| Optical/TOSLINK | Digital audio carried as light through an optical cable; typically an optical port on each device. | At the receiving device’s DAC, before playback through analog speakers or amplification. |
| Stereo RCA | Analog left and right audio on red-and-white jacks. | At the source device, before audio reaches the receiving analog input. |
| Digital coaxial S/PDIF | Digital audio carried electrically, often through a single RCA-style jack. | At the receiving device’s DAC. |
The signal path matters more than a generic ranking of cables. If you use stereo RCA, you hear the source component’s analog output; with optical, the receiving component converts the digital signal. Differences in sound may therefore come from the DACs or other processing in the equipment, rather than from optical being inherently superior. Cambridge Audio’s connection guidance for the EXN100 and EXA100 distinguishes analog RCA and digital inputs.
Which connection should you choose?
Choose optical when both devices have compatible optical ports
Optical is a straightforward option for sending digital audio between matching optical output and input ports. It can also provide electrical isolation between connected components. Check the device manuals for supported formats and follow the connector’s fit and cable-handling requirements.

In addition, the product does not support connection to headphones
Choose stereo RCA when both devices have analog stereo ports
Use red-and-white RCA when the source has stereo analog outputs and the receiving system has matching analog inputs. This uses the source’s DAC, which may be your preference or the only available connection. A Philips guide to digital and analog connections provides further port-matching context.
Choose digital coaxial only when both devices support it
A single RCA-style digital coaxial port is not interchangeable with a red-and-white analog pair. Connect it to a matching digital coaxial port and verify format support in both devices’ manuals.

What audio quality can you expect?
The connection type by itself does not establish which setup will sound better. Results depend on the source, the receiving device, supported formats, and the rest of the signal chain. The evidence here establishes how the connections and signal paths differ, not a controlled listening-test winner between optical and analog RCA.

For optical versus digital coaxial—not stereo analog RCA—Cambridge Audio says both can carry S/PDIF and PCM information up to 24-bit/192 kHz, and notes that audible differences between reasonable examples are uncommon in domestic use. That is the manufacturer’s guidance, not a guarantee that every product supports those formats or a claim about every system. See its optical-versus-coaxial discussion.

Resolve port and format mismatches
Optical output on the source, analog RCA input on the receiver
You need an active digital-to-analog converter (DAC) with an optical input and stereo analog RCA outputs. A passive cable cannot turn digital optical audio into analog RCA audio. An optical-to-coaxial converter only changes the digital connection type; it does not create analog audio. Philips explains converter use for connection mismatches.

The devices connect but produce silence or noise
- Confirm the ports. Make sure you have connected optical to optical, analog stereo RCA to matching analog inputs, or digital coaxial to a digital coaxial input.
- Select the receiving input. Choose the input associated with the cable on the receiver, amplifier, or DAC.
- Check the source’s output format. Follow the manuals for both devices. Some digital inputs accept only particular formats.
- Try two-channel PCM if the receiver requires it. For example, Cambridge Audio says its DacMagic 100 accepts two-channel LPCM/stereo PCM, but not Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS; a connected source may need to be set to PCM. This limitation applies to that model, not to every DAC. See the DacMagic 100 format guidance.
- Recheck the cable and connection. Ensure the cable is securely seated and inspect the device manuals for model-specific troubleshooting.
