If Opera eSIM is not working, check the basics first: you need the latest Opera for Android, Android 10 or newer, an eSIM-capable phone that is not carrier-locked, and an active Opera eSIM selected for mobile data. Install the profile over a stable connection before travelling. At your destination, enable the eSIM in your phone’s SIM settings; Opera says the plan activates when it first connects to a network there. Turn off data roaming on your regular SIM to avoid charges from your home carrier. Opera’s eSIM overview and setup guide describe these requirements and steps.
Why the eSIM option may be missing
Opera eSIM is available in the latest Opera for Android, not Opera Mini or Opera GX mobile. Opera’s stated requirements are Android 10 or newer, a phone with eSIM capability, and a device that is unlocked from its carrier. Android version alone does not establish eSIM support: the handset must support eSIM, and its carrier-lock status is a separate check. If you are unsure about either, ask your mobile operator. Opera’s setup guide lists the requirements.

The Opera eSIM is data-only. It provides internet access for the phone and its apps, but it does not replace your phone number or provide that number’s calls and SMS.

- Check eligibility. Update or install the latest Opera for Android, confirm that the phone runs Android 10 or newer, and verify eSIM support and unlocked status with your operator if needed.
- Choose a plan in Opera. Tap the profile icon, scroll to eSIM, select a destination and data amount, then complete checkout. In selected markets, the free offer is shown through a “Claim now” flow.
- Install the profile. Follow the installation prompt from your phone. The prompt can vary by model; use a stable internet connection and, if possible, install before departure. Opera says the eSIM itself only needs to be installed once. For another destination, add a plan to that installed eSIM rather than installing a new profile.
Opera’s overview says its eSIM is powered by Holiday.com. For launch-era plan details, Opera announced 47 supported destination markets and paid allowances of 3GB, 5GB, and 10GB on September 29, 2026. Paid plans are valid for 30 days after activation in the destination; a purchased plan can remain unused for up to one year before its first destination activation. Availability and prices can change. Prices vary by destination, plan size, and local currency, and Opera displays the price in the browser before payment.

What to switch on when you arrive
- Open your phone’s SIM settings and turn on the Opera eSIM.
- In those settings, select the Opera eSIM as the line for mobile data.
- Keep data roaming turned off on your regular SIM if you want to avoid roaming charges from your home carrier.
Opera says the plan starts when the eSIM first connects to a network in the destination country. It uses 5G where local networks support it; otherwise, it connects using the next available network quality. Coverage and network capability vary by destination.
If Opera eSIM still will not connect
Opera’s published guide does not provide an error-code-specific troubleshooting tree. Work through the checks below rather than assuming a particular toggle will fix every failure:

- Recheck eligibility: confirm the phone supports eSIM, is not carrier-locked, and meets Opera’s Android and app requirements.
- Check installation: verify that the eSIM profile installation completed. If it did not, retry the phone’s installation prompt over a stable internet connection.
- Check the selected line: make sure the Opera eSIM is enabled and selected for mobile data in the phone’s SIM settings.
- Check the destination: confirm that the plan covers the country you are in. Opera’s destination coverage and the markets eligible for its free offer are different things.
- Ask for help if the checks do not resolve it: contact your mobile operator about eSIM compatibility or carrier lock, and contact Opera for account- or service-specific help.
Turning off data roaming on your regular SIM is a billing precaution; it does not troubleshoot the Opera eSIM line itself.

Opera’s September 29, 2026 announcement describes a launch offer of 3GB for three days in selected markets. At launch, the offer was available to users in 11 origin markets: the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Canada, United Arab Emirates, Brazil, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Poland. Those origin-market eligibility rules are separate from the 47 destination markets Opera said it supported. Check the offer and destination shown in Opera before relying on either figure; availability may change. Opera’s announcement has the launch details.

Opera says topping up requires internet access, so add data before the allowance runs out or while connected to stable Wi-Fi. When comparing a travel eSIM with another plan, check destination coverage, data allowance, when validity begins and ends, data-only limitations, device requirements, network capability, top-up access, and the price shown for your destination before purchase.
