Choose OpenWrt if you want a flexible system on a supported Wi-Fi router; choose pfSense if you want a dedicated wired firewall/router appliance or PC. Both can handle routing, VLANs, and VPNs, but they commonly run on different hardware. Your decision should start with device compatibility, Wi-Fi needs, network layout, and the workload you expect—not a claim that one platform is universally faster.

OpenWrt and pfSense are built for different common hardware setups

OpenWrt is a Linux distribution for embedded devices, especially wireless routers. It is a natural fit when one supported device needs to provide routing and Wi-Fi. Its project documentation describes firewall, routing, VLAN, and VPN capabilities. OpenWrt documentation

pfSense is commonly deployed on dedicated firewall hardware or a PC. Current Netgate documentation describes support for amd64/x86-64 hardware and Netgate ARM-based firewalls. Netgate calls a perimeter firewall its most common deployment; that is the vendor’s description, not an independent survey. Netgate hardware documentation Netgate common deployments

For pfSense, check architecture and network cards

For a third-party system, Netgate lists minimum requirements of a 64-bit amd64 CPU, at least 1 GB of RAM, an 8 GB or larger drive, and one or more compatible network interface cards. Netgate cautions that these minimums are not suitable for every environment. Confirm that the specific NIC has compatible FreeBSD driver support and that the system fits your traffic and feature needs. Netgate minimum hardware requirements Netgate network-card guidance

Compare the workload, not an assumed speed winner

Neither platform can be declared faster for every network from the available documentation. Throughput depends on the actual hardware and traffic: WAN speed, packet sizes, routing between segments, VPN encryption, state-table size, and enabled inspection packages all matter. Netgate specifically notes that VPN encryption is CPU-intensive and that inspection packages use additional resources. Netgate hardware sizing guidance

NETGEAR Nighthawk WiFi 6 Router R6700AX, Up to 1,500 sq ft, 1.8 Gbps
  • NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

To make a meaningful choice, estimate what the device must do at the same time: serve your internet connection, route traffic among LAN segments, handle VPN traffic, and run any inspection features you plan to enable. A speed result from a different device or feature set cannot establish how your setup will perform.

Choose based on your Wi-Fi and network layout

When Wi-Fi belongs in the same device

OpenWrt is the more natural starting point if you want one supported wireless router to provide both Wi-Fi and routing. Confirm support for the exact hardware revision and make sure the device has enough resources for the services you intend to run.

Do not assume a pfSense appliance or PC will act like an all-in-one Wi-Fi router. Netgate’s hardware guidance treats wireless adapters separately from wired network cards. A dedicated pfSense firewall paired with a separate access point is a practical option when your design separates firewalling from wireless access.

When you need VLANs or multiple network segments

Both platforms support VLAN-related networking. Netgate documents pfSense deployments with multiple networks and VLAN trunking; OpenWrt documentation also describes VLAN capability. Plan the topology first: identify WAN and LAN interfaces, the number of segments, and whether a managed switch or separate access point is needed. Netgate multi-network deployment guidance

A practical decision process

  1. Start with hardware you own or plan to buy. For OpenWrt, verify the exact device and revision in the Table of Hardware. For pfSense, confirm supported architecture and NIC compatibility.
  2. Decide where Wi-Fi will come from. If the router must provide wireless access, look for a supported OpenWrt router or plan a separate access point with pfSense.
  3. Map the network. Count WAN and LAN connections, list planned VLANs and guest or IoT segments, and identify any switch or access point the topology requires.
  4. Estimate the real workload. Include internet throughput, traffic between segments, VPN use, and any inspection packages; then size the hardware for those demands.
  5. Consider operation and support as preferences to evaluate. The documentation cited here does not establish a reliable comparative measure of learning curve, update experience, or support quality, so assess those against your own skills and needs.

What to buy if you are starting from scratch

For an OpenWrt setup, the useful shopping category is an OpenWrt-compatible Wi-Fi router. Choose a particular model only after checking its current device-table entry and exact revision; compatibility is model-specific.

For pfSense, relevant categories include a Netgate appliance or compatible PC, Ethernet NICs, and—if your network needs them—a managed VLAN-capable switch and a separate access point. Netgate says its store hardware is tested with pfSense releases and recommends Intel NICs as a best practice, but the documentation cited here does not establish a particular model as the right choice for every network.
