OpenWorks Engineering has launched a U.S. regional headquarters in Ashburn, Virginia, and says it plans to open a manufacturing facility in Detroit, Michigan, within 2026. The company presents the move as a response to demand for its autonomous vision systems and a way to deepen relationships with U.S. customers and integration partners. The Detroit factory remains a plan, not a confirmed opening.
What the U.S. expansion means
The Ashburn headquarters formalizes an existing U.S. presence after more than a decade of serving American defense and security organizations, according to OpenWorks’ 2026 announcement. The company says the Detroit facility is intended to strengthen local manufacturing and support its North American operations. Chris Bigwood, executive vice president for North American business development and corporate strategy, is leading the facility plan.

OpenWorks attributes the expansion to customer demand and its existing U.S. relationships. The announcement names Thinkom, Echodyne, Epirus, Anduril Industries, Clear Align, Fortem Technologies, ARDEC, Thales USA and Pratt Miller Defense among its U.S.-based relationships. It also says the company recently trained FBI operators; it does not give details about the training or indicate FBI endorsement.

What OpenWorks’ autonomous vision systems do
OpenWorks describes its Vision family as systems for detecting, identifying, tracking and targeting dynamic threats at long range. Its U.S. product descriptions assign different roles to three products:
| Product | Company-described role | Configuration or use |
|---|---|---|
| Vision Flex | Modular autonomous optics | Modular system; the company’s product description does not provide comparable deployment measurements. |
| Vision Pace | Stabilized tracking, targeting and fire control | Stabilized system; the company’s product description does not state a specific deployment configuration. |
| Vision Guard | Panoramic surveillance and tracking | Designed for rapid deployment, according to OpenWorks. |
OpenWorks says its optics are designed to integrate and fuse with other air and missile defense systems. That describes the intended system role; the company announcement does not provide independent test results, measured detection ranges, or a head-to-head comparison of the products. See the company’s U.S. product overview for its descriptions.

How to compare the Vision products
The role descriptions can help frame a requirements discussion, but they are not enough to select a system. A buyer would need to assess the mission, deployment conditions, threat type and the integration work required in the target air-defense architecture. The available descriptions do not establish which product is best for a particular operating environment.
SkyWall Patrol is a separate product
SkyWall Patrol is not one of the Vision family systems. OpenWorks describes it as a handheld system for capturing unmanned aircraft systems (UAS, commonly called drones). Its purpose and deployment differ from the Vision products’ sensing, tracking and targeting roles.

- High dynamic range (HDR): With a dynamic range of 120dB, the camera can capture scenes with a large difference in brightness without crushing shadows or overexposing highlights.
- High sensitivity, low noise and high resolution: It features noise suppression, enabling it to capture high-quality images, even in low-light environments.
- LED flicker mitigation: The camera reduces flickering from LED light sources, including traffic signals, traffic signs, headlights, and taillights.
- Device drivers support wide-platform compatibility: Offering seamless integration to accelerate efficient development by multi-ECU and SoC connectivity with device drivers.
- GMSL2 interface: The GMSL2 interface allows for long-distance signal transmission and power supply over a single cable connection.
What the company’s growth figures show—and do not show
OpenWorks’ 2026 U.S. announcement reports several measures of expansion. These are company disclosures, not independently verified market research or audited performance figures in the cited releases.
| Company-reported measure | What OpenWorks says | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Product adoption | Fourfold growth from 2025 to mid-2026 | The announcement does not provide a baseline, definition of adoption or independent validation. |
| Vision Flex production capability | 2.75 times the capability of the prior year | This is production capability, not a claim that unit sales grew by that amount. |
| Research and development | More than $2.7 million, equivalent to more than £2 million, invested in the last year | The dollar conversion appears in the U.S. release; the U.K. release describes more than £2 million in initiatives. |
| Staffing | Headcount increased from 26 in 2024 to 125 at announcement time | The figures are reported by the company; its U.K. release characterizes the change as fivefold team growth. |
The U.K. announcement says the R&D work includes university collaboration, two funded PhD programs in autonomous vision systems, postdoctoral support and student projects. These details indicate the kinds of research activity the company says it is funding, rather than independently establishing product performance.

What is confirmed about the U.S. footprint
The Ashburn headquarters is described as launched in the U.S. announcement. Detroit is different: OpenWorks said the manufacturing facility was expected to open within 2026, but the announcement itself does not confirm that it has opened. The stated timeline should therefore be treated as the company’s plan unless a later announcement verifies completion.

Chris Down, OpenWorks’ CEO, said the expansion is “a natural next step” in the company’s mission to protect NATO nations and their allies, and cited the U.S. market’s interest in homegrown manufacturing and engineering. Those remarks express the company’s rationale; they are not independent evidence of demand or product effectiveness.
