You can run recorded university lectures as a continuous YouTube Live broadcast by sending a prerecorded video feed through an encoder. For a do-it-yourself setup, use an always-on computer and encoder, configure a playlist to loop, and send the feed to a YouTube stream. The important limitation: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so do not rely on a 24/7 broadcast as the sole archive of your lectures.
Before you stream: confirm eligibility and rights
Check that the channel can go live
Verify the YouTube channel and confirm it has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it and test well before the planned launch.

Clear the lecture materials
Confirm that the university or channel operator has the rights needed to rebroadcast each recording and everything included in it: slides, images, music, embedded clips, and participant contributions or likenesses where applicable. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to represent that it has the necessary rights for the live content and to comply with applicable laws.

If it identifies material, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. A rights holder may need to add a licensed channel to its Content ID allowlist; having a license alone may not prevent an interruption. Obtain clearance before launch and monitor the stream for notices.

Educational purpose does not automatically make a rebroadcast permissible. YouTube notes that U.S. fair use is fact-specific and that courts ultimately decide individual cases; copyright exceptions also vary by region. Choose the encoder and plan the archive
Use an encoder to send the recorded feed
YouTube supports encoder-based streaming, using either software or standalone hardware. Its encoder setup guidance lists verified encoder products, but those products are not made by YouTube. You do not need a particular model: choose an encoder that can play and loop your lecture files and that you can keep running reliably.

Separate continuous broadcasting from replay storage
YouTube’s archive guidance says it can automatically archive a live stream that is less than 12 hours. If a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. A 24/7 broadcast therefore should not be treated as a dependable source of complete lecture replays.

Shorter sessions are an operational choice, not a guarantee of archive behavior. An external SSD is one optional way to keep local backups; it is not a YouTube requirement.

Set up a 24/7 prerecorded YouTube Live stream
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, confirm channel verification and live-stream eligibility. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Prepare the lecture files. Put the cleared recordings in the order you want viewers to see them. Check that each file plays correctly, including its audio, before adding it to the loop.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream. Copy its stream URL and stream key into the matching encoder fields. Handle the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast.
- Configure playback. In the encoder, select the lecture file or playlist and enable looping if you want playback to repeat. Choose a resolution and bitrate your connection can sustain; exact settings depend on your source files, encoder, and available upload capacity.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Sending the feed from the encoder and starting the public broadcast are separate actions in YouTube’s encoder workflow. Check the YouTube preview and confirm picture and sound before using the applicable Studio controls to go live.
- Test the whole setup. Check playlist order and looping, audio and video quality, playback on the devices your audience uses, local recording, and what happens after an interruption. Test before depending on the stream for unattended operation.
- Keep watch and retain backups. Monitor audio and video quality. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; actual bandwidth needs depend on your stream settings. Preserve local lecture recordings for the archive.
Keep the stream running when something fails
A continuous broadcast depends on the encoder, its power source, the internet connection, and successful delivery to YouTube. A local setup means the computer and encoder must stay on and connected. Before launch, test recovery after an internet or power interruption and confirm how to resume sending the feed without exposing or replacing the stream key unnecessarily.
- No preview or incoming signal: Check that the encoder is running, the stream URL and key match the YouTube event, and the channel is eligible to stream. If live streaming was only just enabled, allow for activation time.
- Broadcast starts but the lecture does not advance: Check the encoder’s playlist order and loop setting, then test the files in sequence.
- Unstable picture or audio: Check the source file and encoder output, then compare network upload capacity with the selected stream settings. Keep the recommended 20% bandwidth headroom.
- The live feed is interrupted after a rights notice: Review the notice and the rights for the flagged material. Resolve clearance with the relevant rights holder; do not assume that educational use or possession of a license will prevent Content ID interruption.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Use local recordings and a separately planned archive rather than assuming the continuous broadcast will produce a full replay.
Consider monetization separately
YouTube’s monetization policy update dated July 15, 2025 renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and says repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible for monetization under the existing policy. A continuous lecture loop may merit review under that policy, but it does not establish the outcome for every university lecture channel. Do not assume that educational subject matter or a live format guarantees monetization.
