OpenStack Epoxy 2025.1, released on April 2, 2025, adds tools and hardware support relevant to VMware migration and AI infrastructure. Its clearest migration addition is a Prometheus data source for Watcher, while Nova expands PCI passthrough support and Ironic adds a direct bare-metal container-image deployment interface. These are operational capabilities, not evidence of a universal performance increase or automatic migration.

What is OpenStack Epoxy 2025.1?

Epoxy is the 2025.1 release of OpenStack, the open-source cloud infrastructure platform. The OpenInfra Foundation described it as the project’s 31st release, marking its 15th anniversary, and said it included contributions from about 450 people and more than 7,600 changes.

The release spans infrastructure operations, storage, compute, image management and bare-metal provisioning. For organizations evaluating it, the key question is whether its specific additions match their existing hardware, workloads and migration plan.

How does Epoxy help with VMware migration?

Watcher, OpenStack’s resource-optimization service, gained a Prometheus data source. Operators can use it to monitor an existing VMware environment and observe migration performance, helping them track progress and identify bottlenecks. Monitoring can inform migration decisions, but it does not move workloads by itself.

Epoxy also updates a range of Cinder storage drivers. The release highlights drivers for NetApp, PowerMax, LightBits, Fujitsu, PowerFlex, 3PAR, StorPool, Pure Storage, Nimble and Hitachi. This can matter when workloads depend on storage systems supported through those drivers; it is not a guarantee that every storage configuration or VMware workload will transfer without additional planning or changes.

Before relying on these additions, an operator should check which driver version and storage features their deployment requires, confirm that the target OpenStack environment can access the needed storage, and decide which Prometheus metrics are useful for tracking migration health. The release information does not establish automatic workload conversion or a head-to-head migration result.

What AI, GPU and bare-metal changes are included?

PCI passthrough and Nvidia GRID

Nova expanded support for vfio-PCI variant drivers, including Nvidia GRID on Ubuntu 24.04. Epoxy also supports live migration of instances using these PCI devices. That can give operators more flexibility when placing or maintaining GPU-equipped instances, provided the hardware, driver stack and configuration support the operation.

These changes are relevant to GPU-backed workloads, including some AI deployments, but they do not amount to a general AI performance feature. The release information does not specify a model-training speedup, broader GPU compatibility beyond the stated support, or a benchmark against VMware or another OpenStack release.

Direct container-image deployment on bare metal

Ironic, OpenStack’s bare-metal provisioning service, adds an interface for deploying bootable container images directly to a host. By reducing intermediate deployment steps, the change can simplify an operator’s provisioning workflow. It concerns how bare-metal hosts are provisioned; it is distinct from Nova’s PCI passthrough support for virtual-machine instances.

What other operational changes should operators know about?

  • Cinder: Multipath setup and driver improvements, plus configurable retention of the last n Ceph backup snapshots.
  • Glance: A store-weight mechanism for choosing RBD image stores, along with a safety check on image-conversion output format.
  • Kayobe: Faster infrastructure-VM deployment and removal, and the ability to run without root privileges on the control host.
  • Manila: Share-access rules can switch between read-only and read-write, with updated controls for share-server characteristics.

These changes target particular storage, image, deployment and file-share workflows. Their practical value depends on whether an operator uses the relevant service and configuration.

Does Epoxy make OpenStack faster?

Epoxy includes targeted efficiency changes, such as Glance’s RBD store weighting and Kayobe’s faster infrastructure-VM operations. Watcher’s Prometheus integration can also make migration progress and bottlenecks more visible. Those are concrete workflow and operational improvements, but the official release material does not publish a controlled benchmark percentage for overall OpenStack performance, VMware migration speed or AI workloads.

To judge performance for a specific deployment, measure its own workload on the intended hardware and configuration. For a migration evaluation, track the metrics that matter to the service being moved, and compare results under equivalent conditions rather than treating a release feature as a guaranteed speedup.
