Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a conventional self-managed Magento or Adobe Commerce store, start from NGINX with PHP-FPM. It is the web server configuration Adobe documents for production, and Magento publishes a sample NGINX configuration for it. Choose OpenResty only when you need Lua-based logic at the edge and your team will own that layer. Caddy and Traefik both handle reverse proxying and TLS, but Adobe’s Commerce documentation does not name either as a supported web server, and no Magento-specific configuration for either was found. No credible speed ranking of these four for Magento exists, so the decision should rest on Adobe support, operational fit and actual requirements. Full-page caching is a separate layer and is covered in its own section below.
What Adobe documents for production
Adobe’s software recommendations for production Commerce instances (Adobe Experience League, “Software Recommendations”) list the following components:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- PHP
- NGINX and PHP-FPM
- MySQL
- Elasticsearch or OpenSearch
The same page states that Commerce fully supports both NGINX and Apache, and it provides a recommended NGINX configuration sample. That combination is the only edge-server setup in this comparison with explicit first-party backing. Magento’s sample NGINX configuration (the version published on the 2.4-develop branch) shows the request routing, FastCGI handoff to PHP-FPM, static and media file handling, cache headers and compression that a store must reproduce. Match the sample to your own release line before copying it, because branch versions can differ from the release you run.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow each option fits
NGINX
NGINX is the evidence-backed default. The configuration sample gives you a concrete starting point, and most of the operational knowledge a Magento team needs (PHP-FPM tuning, try_files rules, static asset paths) maps directly onto it. Choosing plain NGINX adds no extra platform layer to learn.

OpenResty
OpenResty is an NGINX-based web platform that bundles LuaJIT and a large set of Lua libraries and modules, aimed at programmable web applications and gateways. OpenResty states plainly that it is not an NGINX fork. Its distinguishing feature is scripting at the edge, not a demonstrated Magento speed gain.
Use OpenResty when a defined requirement needs that programmability, such as custom request logic at the gateway. Do not treat it as a drop-in, Adobe-supported Magento server. Adding Lua to the request path means you must test the Magento behavior again after every change. OpenResty also warns that third-party NGINX C modules it does not maintain are unsupported and may compromise stability. Teams that need OpenResty-specific help can use OpenResty’s commercial technical support or its OpenResty XRay monitoring offering, which OpenResty itself describes.

Caddy
Caddy’s reverse proxy documentation covers upstream selection, forwarded headers, trusted proxies and HTTPS transport behavior. Since Caddy v2.11.0, it automatically sets the Host header to match an HTTPS upstream’s host unless you configure otherwise. If Caddy sits behind a CDN or another proxy, review its trusted proxy configuration so that spoofable forwarded headers are not trusted. These are proxy-level facts. Adobe’s Commerce documentation does not describe Caddy as a supported Magento web server, so using it means you carry the support question yourself.
Traefik
Traefik’s documentation establishes its TLS model: certificates can be supplied in routing configuration or obtained through certificate resolvers, and certificate selection follows from that. Adobe’s Commerce documentation does not describe a Traefik deployment, and no Magento-specific Traefik recipe was found. Treat Traefik as a candidate when its routing and certificate workflow already matches your infrastructure, and validate the Magento-specific behavior listed in the checklist below before relying on it.

Full-page caching is a separate decision
Adobe’s caching guidance says on-premises Commerce production uses Varnish for full-page caching, and that Commerce Cloud uses Fastly for edge and full-page caching. Your web server or proxy choice does not configure either one. Changing the application cache backend does not configure Varnish or Fastly, and an edge proxy in front of your store is not a replacement for either.

On Adobe Commerce Cloud, route configuration controls upstreams, redirects, TLS and route caching. Cloud documentation describes HTTPS route templates and Force TLS through Fastly in Staging and Production. Decide the proxy and the caching architecture as two separate questions, and document each one.

Checks before you switch the proxy
Any change of edge server should pass the following checks on a staging environment that mirrors production topology before go-live:

- Compare Magento’s front-controller rewrites and try_files-equivalent behavior against the sample configuration for your release line.
- Confirm static and media files are served with the same paths, status codes and cache headers as before.
- Confirm security-denied paths still return the same responses.
- Confirm customer- and session-aware responses are not cached by the edge proxy in a way that exposes one visitor’s data to another.
- Test PHP-FPM upstream handling under load, including error responses when PHP-FPM is unavailable.
- Confirm redirects, health checks and TLS termination work for the actual network path, including any CDN in front of the server.
- Confirm forwarded host, protocol and client IP values reach Magento correctly, and that the proxy does not trust forwarded headers from untrusted sources.
What the evidence does not establish
- No controlled comparison or Magento-specific compatibility matrix covering all four servers was located, so this article does not rank them on speed or stability.
- No hands-on testing of these servers with Magento is reported here. The guidance above comes from the official documentation for each product and from Adobe’s Commerce documentation.
- OpenResty’s scale claims are broad marketing statements, not Magento benchmarks, and should not be used to rank the options.
- Adobe’s software recommendations and caching guidance are the basis for the support statements above. Check the current Adobe pages for your release before finalizing a configuration.
The choice comes down to three questions: whether you must run Adobe-supported configuration, whether you need Lua at the edge, and whether your team can own the routing and TLS operations of the proxy you pick.
