Not proven. openKylin 3.0 has a distinctive AI-desktop design: its developers describe KylinBot as a native agent framework, with UKUI desktop functions available for agents to use. That makes it a notable experiment in AI that can interact with system settings, but available evidence does not establish that it is the smartest, safest, or most reliable Linux desktop.
What is new in openKylin 3.0?
OpenAtom openKylin Community announced version 3.0 on August 31, 2026. The official download-center listing separately gives September 5, 2026 as the release date for downloadable images; those are two different dates, not a contradiction about a single event. The announcement centers the release on a Linux 7.0 kernel, UKUI 4.24, and KylinBot, alongside support for mainstream AI agents. It also describes Rust refactoring for system tools, expanded permissions for the Panshi architecture, and post-quantum cryptography mechanisms. These are project feature descriptions, not independent evidence of performance or security improvements. OpenAtom openKylin Community release announcement · official download center

The community says it iterated on “more than 180 core components.” That count describes the project’s component upgrades; it is not a benchmark or a measure of how much faster or easier the desktop is to use.
What can KylinBot and Xiao K do?
TecMint describes KylinBot as the agent framework and Xiao K as its graphical assistant. According to that review, users can make voice or text requests, continue across multiple turns, and ask for system tasks involving Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, display brightness, and input devices. These details should be read as the reviewer’s account of the capabilities, not as proof that every action works reliably on every computer. TecMint’s openKylin review

The same review describes agents reaching desktop functions through structured interfaces associated with MCP and UKUI’s KACP integration, rather than relying only on simulated mouse and keyboard input. It says WorkBuddy, OpenClaw, and Raccoon Work can also use this system-access layer. A structured interface can make automation more direct and predictable than screen-level clicking, but its existence alone does not tell you what permissions an agent receives, when an action needs confirmation, or how consistently tasks succeed.
Does openKylin 3.0 deserve the “smartest” label?
There is not enough evidence to rank it. The sources consulted do not provide a named performance benchmark, a user survey, or an independent comparison of AI desktops. Nor do they establish task-completion reliability, permission safeguards, or prompt-data handling. The most defensible conclusion is narrower: openKylin 3.0 makes agent access to desktop functions a prominent part of its design, which is worth evaluating directly if that is what you want from an AI-enabled Linux system.

For a meaningful comparison with another desktop, look at whether agents can call real system functions, what actions they can take, what confirmation and permission controls exist, where prompts are processed, whether local models are supported, and how hardware compatibility and language coverage are documented. Current evidence does not settle those questions well enough to name a winner.
Where do Xiao K’s prompts go?
The available sources do not establish where prompts are processed, what information is transmitted, how long it is retained, or what consent and opt-out controls apply. A Gitee pull request for the KylinBot shell describes automatically retrieving a token and saving it locally, with a new retrieval when the token expires. That implementation detail does not answer the broader data-flow questions. KylinBot shell pull requests on Gitee

- Live Boot: Simply plug the USB drive into your computer, select the USB drive as your boot device, and experience Linux Mint without installation. This allows you to test the OS and its features before making any changes to your system.
- Install Option: Once you've tested and decided to keep Linux Mint, you can easily install it on your computer directly from the USB drive.
- Pre-installed software like LibreOffice for office tasks, a capable web browser (Firefox), email client (Thunderbird), and multimedia tools. This minimizes the need for additional downloads, saving you time and effort.
- Resource Efficiency: Designed to run efficiently on a variety of hardware configurations. It demands fewer system resources compared to some other operating systems, making it an excellent choice for older computers or devices with limited hardware specifications.
- Compatible with PC/Laptop/Desktop brands - Dell, HP, Sony, Lenovo, Samsung, Acer, Toshiba & more. Minimum system requirements 4 GB RAM Dual-Core Processor (2 GHz) 20 GB of free disk space
TecMint also raises questions about Token Center login and prompt destinations, and notes that some skill documentation is in Chinese. Those observations do not establish that all skills lack English documentation or that prompts necessarily go to a particular provider. If you plan to use the assistant with confidential information, check the current privacy and service documentation before doing so. The available material also does not establish whether Xiao K requires an internet connection or supports a fully local workflow.

The beta announcement says the community’s test plan covered hardware compatibility, KylinBot, AI Assistant 5.0, UKUI 4.24 features such as air gestures and screen reading, and Rust-refactored tools. That describes the scope of the plan, not a guarantee that each feature works on every supported device. OpenAtom openKylin Community announcements
What should you know before installing?
TecMint describes the ISO it reviewed as a little over 7 GB and recommends a USB flash drive of at least 8 GB. Treat that as a recommendation for the image discussed in the review, not a guarantee about every image currently offered. Check the current download size, checksum, and installation instructions before writing the image; the review describes using dd or a graphical imaging utility and recommends checksum verification. TecMint’s installation notes
TecMint used a virtual machine for an initial look, but a VM setup is the reviewer’s method, not an official minimum system requirement. Testing functions that control Wi-Fi or Bluetooth requires access to the relevant radios. For a real installation, use the official hardware-support information rather than assuming that a virtual-machine result predicts performance or peripheral support on your device.
What does the release establish about security and performance?
The announcement’s mention of post-quantum cryptographic mechanisms does not amount to a complete security evaluation, and it does not show that installing openKylin makes a computer categorically safer. Likewise, the Linux 7.0 kernel and the reported component upgrades are version and development facts, not proof of a performance gain. The evidence available here does not include independent measurements that would support such conclusions.
