The Linux Foundation’s OpenJS Foundation 2021 End-of-Year Update, published November 18, 2021, recaps the Foundation’s JavaScript project portfolio, corporate support and ecosystem participation. It describes OpenJS as hosting 38 projects at the time; those figures and membership details are historical, not a current snapshot.

What the 2021 update says about OpenJS

The article describes OpenJS as a global community formed through the merger of the Node.js Foundation and the JS Foundation. It says the organization hosted 38 JavaScript projects in 2021, including Node.js, AMP, Electron, jQuery, webpack, Node-RED and Appium. That count and those examples reflect the update’s publication period, not a verified 2026 project inventory.

The update also says that more than 97 percent of the world’s websites use JavaScript. This is a figure reported by The Linux Foundation in 2021; the article does not identify the underlying study or its publisher, so it should not be treated as an independently sourced or current statistic.

How companies participated

The update presents OpenJS as member-supported, with companies contributing financial support and participating in governance. It names IBM, Google, Joyent, Microsoft, GoDaddy and Netflix among established supporters, and says American Express, Bloomberg, Coinbase, NodeXperts, Sentry and Stream joined in 2021. These are historical membership statements, not a present-day member list.

Netflix: using and contributing to Node.js

The Linux Foundation article says Netflix had used and contributed to Node.js since 2013. It describes a serverless Node.js platform supporting device interfaces and web applications used in content production. This is the update’s account of Netflix’s engagement, rather than an independent technical evaluation of the platform.

Bloomberg: project contributions and standards work

The article describes Bloomberg as contributing to core projects and participating in standards work, including work on JavaScript itself. It quotes Bloomberg as reporting more than 10,000 frontend applications, tens of millions of lines of JavaScript, and more than 2,000 software engineers writing JavaScript. These scale figures are Bloomberg’s claims as quoted in the 2021 update.

Governance and the goal of a healthy ecosystem

At OpenJS World 2021, Board President Todd Moore and Executive Director Robin Ginn gave an opening keynote about balancing stability and openness in shared technologies with the needs of different participants. Moore, identified in the update as IBM’s VP of Open Technology and Developer Advocacy, described why IBM and its customers invest in the projects hosted by OpenJS:

“IBM and our customers today rely upon many of the open source JavaScript projects hosted at the OpenJS Foundation — it’s in all our economic interests to invest in that technology as it is the plumbing that creates the opportunity for all of us to share in.”

Ginn summarized the Foundation’s stated purpose: “Our goal at OpenJS is to incubate and sustain a healthy JavaScript ecosystem.”

What the update invites organizations to do

The article’s central message is an invitation to help sustain the JavaScript ecosystem through participation. Its examples show several forms of engagement: financial support, governance, contributing to projects, and standards work. The update does not describe a consumer product or purchase recommendation.

Read the original OpenJS Foundation 2021 End-of-Year Update for the Foundation’s account as published on November 18, 2021. The article documents that point in time; it does not establish current membership, project totals, leadership or project status.
