If a Cilium agent pod on Ubuntu 22.04 is stuck in CrashLoopBackOff, the status tells you the container is repeatedly failing—not why. Check the Cilium DaemonSet, identify whether one or all nodes are affected, and inspect both the current and previous container logs before changing the host or reinstalling Cilium. The log error, interpreted against the exact Cilium release and cluster environment, is the starting point for a safe fix.
1. Check whether the failure affects one node or the whole cluster
Cilium runs an agent pod on each applicable node through a DaemonSet. Its official troubleshooting guide describes CrashLoopBackOff as indicating a permanent failure scenario; use that status as a signal to investigate, not as a root-cause diagnosis. Start by comparing the DaemonSet’s desired and ready counts, then find the failing pod:

kubectl -n kube-system get ds
kubectl -n kube-system get pods -l k8s-app=cilium
For the DaemonSet, compare the desired, current, and ready counts shown in the output. In the pod list, note each Cilium pod’s node, restart count, and age. If only one agent is failing, focus first on that node’s kernel, architecture, and configuration. If agents on every node are failing, look for a shared cause such as a cluster-wide configuration or compatibility issue. Record whether the problem began at initial startup or after a change or upgrade.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe Cilium documentation shows sorting agents by restart count to spot the most frequently restarting pod. If your kubectl version supports this option, you can use:

kubectl -n kube-system get pods -l k8s-app=cilium --sort-by=.status.containerStatuses[0].restartCount
2. Read the failing container’s logs, including its previous run
Set <cilium-pod> to the failing pod’s name from the list. Capture the current logs and, because the container has restarted, the logs from its previous instance:
kubectl -n kube-system logs --timestamps <cilium-pod>
kubectl -n kube-system logs --timestamps -p <cilium-pod>
The first command requests the current container’s logs; -p requests the previous container instance’s logs. Pay attention to the first fatal or error message and the context around it. A short excerpt from the prior run may reveal the initial failure more clearly than later retry messages. The pod’s status alone cannot distinguish a kernel problem from API-server connectivity, configuration, or another cause.
3. Check the installed Cilium release against the host
Before applying a version-specific fix, establish which Cilium release the lab installed. Compare its requirements with the affected node’s kernel, architecture, and Ubuntu variant; also note the Kubernetes version and installation method. Requirements differ by Cilium release, so the latest stable documentation is not automatically the right compatibility reference for an older lab.

As of the Cilium documentation labeled 1.20.2, the system requirements page specifies AMD64 or AArch64 and Linux kernel 5.10 or later, or the documented RHEL 8.10 equivalent. It lists Ubuntu 20.04 or later among distributions known to work. These are requirements for that documented release, not a guarantee that an older Cilium version has the same minimums. Check the Cilium system requirements and Kubernetes requirements against the version actually installed.
Ubuntu 22.04 on Raspberry Pi
If the affected host is a Raspberry Pi running Ubuntu 22.04, Cilium’s requirements page specifically calls out installing the extra Raspberry Pi kernel modules:
sudo apt install linux-modules-extra-raspi
This note is specific to Raspberry Pi. Do not treat it as a general repair for every Ubuntu 22.04 server; first confirm that the failing node is a Raspberry Pi and that the logs or environment point to a kernel-module issue.

4. Inspect agent status and collect diagnostics if logs are inconclusive
If the agent stays available long enough to accept a command, consult the Cilium Kubernetes troubleshooting guide for retrieving detailed status with cilium-dbg status in the pod context. The status output can provide more detail about the agent’s view of the cluster than the pod summary.

5. Match the next action to the evidence
Use the logs and scope of the failure to choose what to investigate next rather than applying a generic “CrashLoopBackOff fix.”
- Kernel or module errors: compare the affected host’s kernel and architecture with the requirements for the installed Cilium release. For Raspberry Pi Ubuntu 22.04, check the documented
linux-modules-extra-raspirequirement. - API-server connection errors: investigate connectivity and cluster configuration indicated by the log message. If this lab uses Kind, compare the failure with Cilium’s Kind installation troubleshooting guidance, which documents API-server connection failures.
- Configuration or upgrade-related errors: relate the first failing log messages to the change and the Cilium version in use. Avoid assuming that a fix documented for another release or cluster type applies to this installation.
- Unclear failure: gather detailed agent status and a reviewed sysdump before making further changes.
The Kind guide also describes agent crashes associated with overlapping BPF cgroup programs in Kind environments. Treat that as a lead only when the lab uses Kind and the log pattern is consistent; it is not a general explanation for Cilium crashes on Ubuntu.
