OpenDaylight Neon was the project’s tenth release, announced by LF Networking on March 26, 2019, alongside OpenDaylight’s sixth anniversary. It strengthened cloud and edge virtualization, added optical-transport control features, and improved the BGP-based WAN stack. The announcement described a milestone in the project’s history; it does not establish Neon’s current support or deployment status.
What is OpenDaylight Neon?
OpenDaylight (ODL) is an open-source framework for software-defined networking (SDN): software that lets network operators control and automate network behavior through programmable interfaces rather than configuring every device independently. The Linux Foundation founded the project in 2013 as its first networking project, with the aim of advancing SDN adoption, innovation, and interoperability.

Neon was the project’s tenth release and marked six years since its founding. LF Networking’s March 2019 announcement characterized the project’s scale as 10 releases, more than 1,000 authors and submitters, over 100,000 commits, and networks serving more than one billion subscribers. These are historical figures reported by the announcement, not an independent audit or a current project snapshot. LF Networking’s Neon announcement

What changed in the Neon release?
Cloud and edge virtualization
Neon hardened network-virtualization features for cloud and edge deployments, with the stated goal of making them more suitable for production use. In practice, virtualization lets network services be created and managed in software across infrastructure rather than tied to a single physical network configuration.

- GIGABIT ETHERNET PORTS: Features 5 x 1.0Gbps Ethernet ports for high-speed connectivity. Auto-negotiating ports detect the optimal speed for connected devices and work with existing Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cables.
- PLUG-AND-PLAY UNMANAGED NETWORK SWITCH: Simple plug-and-play setup with no software to install or configuration required.
- FLEXIBLE MOUNTING OPTIONS: Compact metal design supports desktop or wall-mount placement for versatile installation.
- SILENT & ENERGY-EFFICIENT OPERATION: Fanless design ensures silent performance, while IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet reduces power consumption without compromising high-speed network performance.
- REGIONAL COMPATIBILITY: Made for use in U.S. & CA only
Optical transport control
The release added infrastructure-control capabilities for optical transport. An open northbound API was intended to let higher-level controllers interoperate with that transport infrastructure. “Northbound” refers to interfaces exposed upward to applications or orchestration systems; it is distinct from southbound interfaces used to communicate with network devices.
WAN connectivity and BGP
Building on the BGP stack introduced in the preceding Fluorine release, Neon improved error reporting and restart behavior, with the aim of making wide-area network connectivity more stable. BGP, the Border Gateway Protocol, exchanges routing information between networks.

Stability and deployment work
LF Networking also listed broader stability, scalability, functional enhancements, bug fixes, and infrastructure improvements. The release announcement framed these changes as useful to vendors and downstream projects assembling and deploying platforms that depend on OpenDaylight; it did not provide benchmark results or quantified reliability gains.
How does OpenDaylight relate to Kubernetes, OpenStack, and ONAP?
OpenDaylight is a networking control framework, not a replacement for a container orchestrator or cloud platform. The Neon announcement named Kubernetes, OpenStack, ONAP, OPNFV, Akraino Edge Stack, and Network Service Mesh among related or downstream communities. Such project relationships can involve integration or use in particular components; they do not mean that each named project bundles or requires OpenDaylight.

The announcement specifically said ONAP used OpenDaylight in its APP-C, SDN-C, and SDN-R projects for use cases including 5G and CCVPN. This describes the relationships reported in 2019, not a guarantee about current architectures or versions.
Was OpenDaylight widely used for SDN?
The 2019 announcement presented OpenDaylight as a mature, broadly used open-source SDN project. It quoted Cisco CTO Dave Ward calling it “the de facto open source SDN controller for the industry.” That is an attributed industry opinion from the release, not a neutral market-share finding.

LF Networking named AT&T, CableLabs, China Mobile, Ericsson, Globo.com, Orange, Tencent, Verizon, Inspur, Lumina Networks, Cisco, and Red Hat as adopters or supporters. The announcement also quoted Ericsson as saying it had deployed OpenDaylight software to more than 50 service providers worldwide. That deployment figure is Ericsson’s claim as relayed in 2019; it should not be read as a present-day count.
