Secure a self-hosted OpenClaw deployment by keeping the Gateway on loopback, requiring authenticated access, separating users with different trust levels, enabling a real sandbox for untrusted work, and auditing after every exposure or policy change. Do not publish the Gateway directly to the internet just to make remote access convenient; use a private mesh VPN or an authenticated reverse proxy instead.
Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click OpenClaw, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
What you are protecting
OpenClaw’s Gateway is the control plane for a deployment. OpenClaw documentation describes it as owning channel connections, configuration, credentials and the control-plane API. A compromise therefore reaches more than a chat endpoint: it can expose integration tokens, alter policy, read operational state and invoke whatever tools you leave enabled.

Start with a narrow threat model. A single operator on a private machine is different from a shared server where several people can send messages, a bot that receives public content, or an automation host that executes code. The more varied the users and inputs, the more important separate trust boundaries and execution isolation become.
- Single-operator install: one administrator, one Gateway, private network access and carefully limited tools.
- Trusted team: several known users, explicit channel allowlists, reviewable configuration and a documented process for rotating credentials.
- Mixed-trust or adversarial users: separate Gateways, credentials and preferably separate operating-system users or hosts. Do not put these users behind one shared Gateway boundary.
OpenClaw’s own rule is concise: “One trust boundary per gateway.” Treat that as an architectural requirement, not a suggestion.

The secure baseline to establish first
Before adding integrations or remote access, establish this baseline on a dedicated host or operating-system account:
- Keep the Gateway bound to loopback. On a regular host install, the documented default is loopback binding. This prevents unsolicited connections from other network interfaces.
- Run the built-in audit. Execute
openclaw security auditimmediately after installation and save the output with your deployment notes. - Require authentication everywhere. Keep Gateway authentication enabled and protect every administrative or control-plane path. A network restriction is not a replacement for credentials.
- Configure message admission. Use DM pairing and explicit allowlists. For groups, require a mention gate unless the group is exceptionally trusted and the behavior is intentional.
- Remove unused capabilities. Disable control-plane, filesystem, browser, network and execution tools that your workflow does not require.
- Review extensions. Install only plugins and skills from sources you can inspect and trust. Treat each added component as code running inside your trust boundary.
- Enable a sandbox for untrusted work. Sandboxing is off by default, so turn on an appropriate backend before handling hostile text, files, links or code.
- Protect state and secrets. Restrict configuration, the
.envfile, credential directories, logs and transcript storage to the account that needs them. - Re-audit after changes. Repeat the audit after changing bindings, channels, tools, sandbox policy, containers or reverse-proxy exposure.
This order matters. It gives you a known posture before you introduce the complexity of a public-facing proxy, container networking or additional channels.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Network exposure: loopback, private access or public proxy
Choose the smallest exposure surface that meets your use case. A Gateway listening on a public interface is reachable by every scanner and attacker who can route to that address; authentication then has to withstand all of that traffic. Keeping the process on loopback removes that direct attack surface.
| Deployment path | Exposure surface | When it fits | Security work required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loopback only | Local host | Operator uses the same machine or a local management tunnel | Keep Gateway binding unchanged; protect the host account and local socket or port |
| Private mesh VPN | Private network addresses | Remote administration by a small, known team | Use VPN identity controls, keep Gateway authentication enabled and avoid advertising a public listener |
| Authenticated reverse proxy | Public proxy endpoint; Gateway remains private behind it | Controlled remote access where a browser or standard HTTPS endpoint is required | Strong identity at the proxy, TLS, rate limits, logging and strict upstream access; never bypass Gateway authentication |
| Public Gateway bind | Direct internet exposure | Generally avoid | Requires continuous patching, firewalling, authentication and monitoring; a public bind is not an authentication mechanism |
Using a private mesh VPN
A private mesh VPN, such as the Tailscale path documented by OpenClaw, lets authorized devices reach a private address without port-forwarding the Gateway to the internet. Keep the Gateway bound to its local interface where possible, then use the VPN’s device and user policy to reach the host. Maintain OpenClaw authentication as a second control: a device being on the mesh must not automatically grant control-plane access.
Limit the VPN ACLs to the administrators and services that need the Gateway. Remove old devices, use separate identities for contractors or automation, and log membership changes. If your VPN implementation requires the Gateway to listen on a non-loopback interface, bind only to the private interface and verify the host firewall allows traffic from the VPN range rather than from all addresses.
Using a reverse proxy
Terminate HTTPS at an authenticated reverse proxy and forward only the required paths to the private Gateway. Enforce identity before proxying, set conservative request and body limits, and record authentication and upstream failures. Do not publish an unauthenticated health or control endpoint simply because the proxy itself has a login page. The Gateway’s own token or authentication layer must remain active.

Pairing, allowlists and group-message safety
Unknown direct-message senders should receive a pairing code instead of having their message processed. Complete pairing only after you have verified the person and the channel. Keep the resulting allowlist explicit; do not use a broad wildcard when only a few accounts need access.
For group channels, enable a mention gate so the agent responds only when deliberately addressed. This reduces accidental processing of every message, including pasted instructions, links and files from people who are not trusted operators. Maintain separate allowlists for direct messages and groups, and review them when membership changes.
- Remove departed users promptly rather than relying on a future cleanup.
- Use a dedicated channel or account for administration instead of mixing operator commands with public conversation.
- Assume any content that reaches a group is potentially adversarial, even when it comes from a known user.
- Pair only the channels you actually need; every enabled channel adds parsing, credential and policy surface.
Apply the one-Gateway trust-boundary rule
A Gateway should contain users and workloads with compatible trust. A private family assistant, an internal engineering bot and a public community bot should not share one Gateway merely because doing so is convenient. Their credentials, transcripts, tools and failure consequences differ.
When to create another Gateway
- Users can send content that another user must not see or influence.
- One workload needs filesystem, browser or execution tools while another should be read-only.
- A public or semi-public channel is mixed with private operator conversations.
- You cannot give every participant the same level of access without violating least privilege.
Use separate credentials for each Gateway. Prefer separate operating-system accounts; for stronger isolation, place the Gateways on separate hosts or virtual machines. Document which channels, secrets and tools belong to each instance so a later configuration change does not silently collapse the boundaries.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Reduce the tool and extension attack surface
Every enabled tool is an authority the agent can exercise. Begin with no more than the workflow requires, then add capabilities one at a time. Review control-plane, filesystem, browser, network and execution tools separately because each has a different blast radius.
| Capability class | Typical risk | Hardening decision |
|---|---|---|
| Control plane | Changes policy, channels or Gateway state | Keep administrative operations unavailable to ordinary chat users; reserve them for a dedicated operator path |
| Filesystem | Reads or changes host data | Expose only a narrowly scoped workspace; avoid home directories, credential stores and system paths |
| Browser | Handles hostile web content and may carry sessions | Use a separate profile or sandbox; do not expose logged-in personal accounts to untrusted prompts |
| Network | Reaches internal or external services | Allow only required destinations and keep credentials out of arbitrary request parameters |
| Execution | Runs commands or code | Prefer a sandbox backend; remove the tool entirely when the use case does not need it |
Plugins and skills deserve the same review as executable dependencies. Check their source, requested permissions, update history and network behavior. A trusted publisher is not a substitute for least privilege, and a plugin that is safe in one Gateway may be inappropriate in another with more sensitive credentials.

Sandbox execution deliberately
OpenClaw documentation states, “Sandboxing is off by default.” If the agent may handle untrusted content or execute code, configure a sandbox backend before enabling those tasks. Then verify the effective policy rather than assuming the configuration was accepted.
Use openclaw sandbox explain to inspect the active posture. Confirm which backend is selected, what filesystem is visible, whether network access is available, which user runs the process and which tools are allowed. Run the command again after changing policy or upgrading the deployment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat the documented container profile provides
The default Docker and Podman profile is documented as having no network, a read-only root, all capabilities dropped and a non-root user. Those settings materially reduce escape and exfiltration opportunities, but they do not make arbitrary code safe. Writable mounts, host sockets, extra capabilities, injected credentials or a broad workspace can undo the benefit.
- No network: keep it unless the task genuinely needs network access; add narrowly scoped access only when you can explain the destination and credential flow.
- Read-only root: provide a small, explicit writable workspace for generated files instead of making the whole filesystem writable.
- Dropped capabilities: do not add Linux capabilities as a troubleshooting shortcut without documenting the new risk.
- Non-root user: preserve the configured non-root identity and ensure mounted files are readable and writable only where intended.
Remember that a sandbox isolates execution, not necessarily the Gateway’s own secrets. Keep credentials outside the sandbox and pass only the minimum data required for a task.
Docker and Podman hardening
Containers improve repeatability and can provide an execution boundary, but a container is not automatically private. On a VPS or public host, OpenClaw’s Docker guidance specifically calls for reviewing network-exposure hardening and the Docker DOCKER-USER firewall chain.
Image provenance and updates
Use official OpenClaw images from the official GitHub Container Registry or Docker Hub locations. Avoid unofficial mirrors, repacked images and anonymous “latest” builds. Pin a deployment version where practical so an update is deliberate and reproducible; record the image reference and date in your deployment notes. Apply security updates on a schedule, test them against your channel and sandbox policy, then rerun the audit.

Container network controls
Review published ports, bridge networks and host-mode settings. Publish only the proxy or private service port you intentionally need. Enforce host firewall policy in the DOCKER-USER chain because Docker’s forwarding rules can otherwise make an exposed container reachable in ways your ordinary host rules do not express. Verify from another machine which ports are actually reachable, rather than trusting the compose file or startup log.
Protect the onboarding-generated token
Docker onboarding generates a Gateway token and writes it to .env. Treat that file as a secret: restrict its permissions, keep it out of source control and backups that are broadly accessible, and redact it from support bundles. If it may have been exposed, rotate it and invalidate the old value wherever it is used.
Protect credentials, configuration and transcripts
Because the Gateway owns credentials and control-plane state, the data around it is security-sensitive even when no command execution is enabled. Protect:
- Gateway tokens and channel credentials;
- the OpenClaw configuration and any environment files;
- credential directories and mounted secret files;
- logs, message history and transcripts, which may contain private prompts or tool output;
- container manifests, backup archives and deployment notes that reveal topology or secrets.
Use the narrowest filesystem permissions your operating system supports. Keep backups encrypted and test that restoring them does not make secrets world-readable. Avoid copying production transcripts into issue trackers or chat rooms. When a credential is suspected to be exposed, rotate it at the upstream service, replace the Gateway token if applicable, review logs for use during the exposure window and remove the leaked copy from accessible storage.
Audit configuration drift continuously
Run openclaw security audit after installation, after changing network exposure, and after modifying channel, tool or sandbox policy. Keep each result with the deployment version and date so you can tell whether a new finding reflects a real change or an updated rule.
An audit is a point-in-time check, not a permanent guarantee. Add review triggers to your operating procedure:
Best Value
- new channel, plugin, skill or credential;
- new published port, VPN route or reverse-proxy rule;
- change to container mounts, capabilities, user identity or network mode;
- Gateway or image upgrade;
- new operator, group membership change or suspected incident.
After remediation, run the audit again and compare the output. If a warning is intentional, record the reason, compensating control and owner instead of ignoring it silently.
Deployment choices compared
| Option | Exposure | Trust model | Execution isolation | Credential handling | Operational notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dedicated host, loopback Gateway | Local only | Single operator | Host process; optional sandbox | Local files protected by OS permissions | Simplest to reason about; remote access needs a tunnel or private network |
| Dedicated host plus private mesh VPN | Private network | Single operator or trusted team | Host, Docker/Podman, SSH or OpenShell as required | Gateway authentication plus VPN identity | Usually the best remote-management balance; keep private ACLs current |
| Containerized Gateway behind authenticated proxy | Public proxy, private upstream | Trusted team with centralized identity | Docker/Podman sandbox for selected tasks | Secret files or environment injection with strict permissions | More moving parts; secure proxy, container network and DOCKER-USER policy together |
| Direct public Gateway bind | Public network | Any reachable sender unless fully filtered | Whatever the host provides | Gateway credentials exposed to internet attack traffic | Highest risk and maintenance burden; avoid when a private path or proxy works |
Failure modes and recovery
The Gateway is reachable from the internet unexpectedly
Check the process bind address, container published ports, host firewall and reverse-proxy upstream. Remove unnecessary port mappings, restore loopback or private-interface binding, and enforce the DOCKER-USER policy on Docker hosts. Re-run the audit and inspect the listener from an external network.
A legitimate user cannot send a message
Check whether DM pairing is pending, whether the account is on the correct allowlist and whether a group mention gate is suppressing an unmentioned message. Do not solve an allowlist problem by accepting every sender; pair or add only the verified identity.
Sandboxed work fails
Run openclaw sandbox explain and inspect the effective backend, user, mounts and network setting. A read-only root, no-network profile or non-root ownership may be the intentional cause. Add only the smallest writable path or destination required, then rerun the audit.
A token or transcript may have leaked
Assume compromise until disproven. Revoke or rotate affected channel credentials and Gateway tokens, restrict access to configuration and logs, preserve relevant audit records, and review activity for the period in which the data was exposed. Do not merely rename the file or hide the value in a different environment variable.
An upgrade changes the security posture
Compare the recorded image or package version, configuration, enabled tools and sandbox explanation before and after the upgrade. Test in a separate Gateway when trust boundaries are strict, then promote the change only after the audit is clean and the rollback plan is documented.
Recommended Free Tools
A repeatable maintenance checklist
- Keep the Gateway on loopback or a private interface; never expose it merely for convenience.
- Use authenticated access in addition to VPN, firewall or proxy controls.
- Review DM pairings, channel allowlists and group mention gates.
- Separate mixed-trust users with distinct Gateways, credentials and preferably OS accounts or hosts.
- Remove unused control-plane, filesystem, browser, network and execution tools.
- Keep sandboxing enabled for untrusted content or code and verify it with
openclaw sandbox explain. - Use official container images, pin versions where practical and enforce Docker policy through
DOCKER-USER. - Protect
.env, configuration, credential directories, logs and transcripts with least-privilege permissions and encrypted backups. - Run
openclaw security auditafter installation, exposure changes, policy changes and upgrades. - Rotate credentials promptly after suspected exposure and retain the audit output with deployment notes.
The practical goal is not to make OpenClaw unreachable; it is to make every path to the Gateway intentional, authenticated, narrowly authorized and reviewable. A loopback-first deployment, separate trust boundaries, deliberate sandboxing and recurring audits provide that foundation without relying on a public bind as a security control.
