How to Reset Your Palworld Server World Safely

Reset a Palworld server world safely: stop the server, back up Pal/Saved, remove the generated folder under SaveGames/0, restart, and troubleshoot settings or path issues without losing your rollback option.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To reset a Palworld dedicated-server world, stop the server, make a backup, remove the randomly named world folder inside Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/, and start the server again. Palworld will create a new world save on launch.

This is a destructive wipe: bases, items, Pals, characters, levels and other world progress can be lost. Rename or copy the Saved folder instead of deleting it if you may need to roll back.

What a Palworld world reset actually changes

A full world reset removes the save data that defines the current map state. That normally includes player characters, levels, inventories, captured Pals, bases, storage, dropped items and other progress stored in the world. The server then creates a fresh world folder when it starts.

The reset does not necessarily mean every file under Pal/Saved must be removed. The essential target is the randomly named folder below Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/. Deleting unrelated configuration files is a different operation and can produce a settings reset without creating a new map.

Save layouts vary by installation method. Treat the paths below as a map to the relevant directory, not as a promise that every hosting panel uses identical capitalization or storage mounts.

Before you wipe: a safe checklist

  • Confirm the scope. Make sure you want a new world rather than only default server settings or a fresh player. A full wipe is broader than either of those changes.
  • Stop normally. Use the panel’s Stop action or an orderly shutdown. Do not delete files while the process is still running; a restart or forced kill can leave the last save incomplete.
  • Back up while stopped. Copy the entire Pal/Saved directory to a separate location, or rename it to something such as Saved-before-wipe. Renaming preserves a quick rollback and avoids an irreversible delete.
  • Record settings you want to keep. Note the server name, password, difficulty, rates, and other values from your current configuration before removing anything.
  • Check access. You need file-manager or shell access to the server’s installation directory, or a host panel that exposes save files or a reset function.
  • Tell connected players. A wipe cannot be undone from inside the game. Keep the backup until everyone has confirmed that the new world is correct.

The universal reset procedure

  1. Stop the Palworld server. Wait until the panel reports it is stopped or the server process has exited. If the host offers separate Restart, Stop and Kill controls, choose the normal stop operation.
  2. Open the Palworld save root. Navigate to Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/ beneath the server installation or the data volume mounted for the server.
  3. Identify the world folder. In a typical installation, 0 contains one folder with a generated, non-descriptive name. That randomly named folder is the world save. Do not confuse it with the 0 directory itself.
  4. Back up or remove that folder. The safest option is to move or rename it outside SaveGames/0, for example by adding -old to its name. If you have a verified backup and intentionally want to delete it, remove only that world folder.
  5. Start the server. On the first boot after the folder is absent, Palworld should generate a new world folder and initialize a new world.
  6. Join and verify. Connect with a test account, confirm that the spawn and map are new, and check that the server name, password and intended settings are present before inviting everyone back.

If the old world returns, stop immediately and inspect the path. You may have removed a copy rather than the active data directory, or the panel may restore saves from an automatic backup.

Finding the files on each server type

Installation Where to look Important qualification
SteamCMD on Windows C:steamcmdsteamappscommonPalServerPalSavedSaveGames is an example location. Your SteamCMD library or server directory may be different. Follow the actual PalServer install path.
SteamCMD on Linux Find the server’s Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/ below the SteamCMD library. The parent path depends on the account and library chosen during installation.
Docker Use the host directory mapped to the container’s Palworld data volume, then open Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/. The image’s volume mapping determines the host path. Stop the container before changing files and check that image’s documentation.
Managed hosting panel Use the panel’s file manager to locate Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/, or use its world-reset tool if one is provided. Providers can change the root directory, backup behavior and button labels. Follow the panel’s path display rather than assuming a SteamCMD path.

SteamCMD on Windows

Stop the server from its service, script or control panel, then open the installation folder in File Explorer. A common layout is C:steamcmdsteamappscommonPalServerPalSavedSaveGames. Open the only generated folder inside 0 and rename it, or copy it to a backup location and delete the original. Start the server from the same control used to stop it. If no new folder appears, the executable may be using a different working directory; inspect the launch shortcut or service configuration for the real PalServer location.

SteamCMD on Linux

Stop the systemd service, screen session or startup script cleanly. Locate the SteamCMD library containing the Palworld server and descend into Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/. Linux paths are case-sensitive, so Saved, SaveGames and Pal must match the directory names exactly. Rename the generated world folder rather than using a recursive delete until you have confirmed the new world launches. If the service recreates files somewhere else, check its working-directory setting and any startup options.

Docker deployments

First stop the container. Do not edit a bind-mounted save while the container is running. On the host, identify the volume or bind mount that contains Palworld’s Pal/Saved directory; the container’s internal path alone is not enough if the data is persisted outside the image. Back up the host-mounted Saved directory, remove or rename the generated folder under SaveGames/0, and start the container again. Because Docker images expose different volume layouts, verify the mapping in your compose file or image documentation before touching data.

Managed hosting panels

Many hosts provide a Reset world, Wipe map or similar action. Read the confirmation text: some buttons delete only the map, while others remove configuration or all server data. If the panel offers a file manager, use the same stop-backup-remove-start sequence and retain a downloaded backup. A host may restore a scheduled snapshot automatically, so disable or select the intended backup when testing the wipe.

Full wipe, settings reset and player reset are different

Operation Files involved Expected result
Full world wipe The generated folder under Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/ A new map and new world progress after the next start.
Settings-only reset PalWorldSettings.ini and GameUserSettings.ini under Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/ or WindowsServer/ Those files are regenerated with defaults; the existing world can remain intact.
Player-only reset Installation-specific player data No universal path is established here. Do not guess at a player-file deletion when a full wipe is not intended.

Deleting the two configuration files is appropriate only when your goal is to restore default settings. It does not reliably create a new world because an existing world can retain options in its save data.

Why WorldOption.sav can make settings appear ignored

After a world exists, Palworld can copy many options into that world’s WorldOption.sav and read those values on later boots instead of applying every change from the ini file. Consequently, editing PalWorldSettings.ini may appear to do nothing on an established world.

If a setting still refuses to change, stop the server, make a complete backup, and inspect the active world folder for WorldOption.sav. Some guides show a path resembling Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/<world-folder>/WorldOption.sav; directory layouts can differ, so confirm the actual file location before removing it. Deleting this file can reset world options and should be treated as a destructive configuration change. Start the server only after the backup is safe.

For a genuinely new world, removing the generated world folder already removes its associated world-option data. You do not normally need a separate settings-file operation unless you also want to restore the server’s ini files.

Changing settings without losing the world

  1. Stop the server normally.
  2. Back up Pal/Saved and the current configuration files.
  3. Edit the appropriate PalWorldSettings.ini under LinuxServer or WindowsServer. On Linux hosts, the reported path is Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/.
  4. Keep the OptionSettings=(...) block on one line. A hosting guide warns that content after a line break inside that block may be ignored.
  5. Save the file, start the server, and test one change at a time.

Settings are read at boot. Editing while the server is running can be overwritten when it shuts down or restarts, so always stop first. Configuration directories may not exist until the server has launched at least once.

How to verify that the wipe worked

  • After startup, confirm that a newly created generated folder exists under Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/.
  • Join with a test account and check that the character has no previous level, inventory or captured Pals.
  • Look for an unbuilt starting area rather than your former bases and storage.
  • Check the server’s configuration separately; a new world does not guarantee that every ini value reverted to defaults.
  • Stop the server and inspect timestamps if the old folder seems to be in use. The active folder should be the one created during the test launch.

An older Steam forum report described a reset in which map discovery remained while characters and levels were cleared. That is an anecdotal report from an older build, not a current guarantee. If unexplored-map status matters to your group, test it on a copy and verify behavior on the version you run.

Troubleshooting a failed or partial reset

The old world loads again

Stop the server and locate every Pal/Saved directory on the machine or mounted volume. Check the service working directory, Docker bind mount and hosting-panel root. You may have renamed a dormant copy while the server reads another location. Also check whether the host restored an automatic snapshot after startup.

No new world folder appears

Review the server log for a startup failure, permission error or invalid configuration. Ensure the account running the server can write to Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/. A missing directory can indicate that you are browsing the wrong install or that the server has not completed its first initialization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The server starts but settings are unchanged

Confirm that you edited the correct LinuxServer or WindowsServer file, kept the OptionSettings block intact, and restarted after saving. On an existing world, WorldOption.sav may take precedence. Back up before considering its removal.

Players report missing progress unexpectedly

Stop the server and restore the renamed world folder or backup, then start again to confirm the rollback. Do not continue playing on the wiped world if you intend to recover the old one; new writes can complicate a clean restoration.

Rollback and backup strategy

A reversible wipe is simple: stop the server, rename the current generated world folder to include the date, and keep the previous copy outside the active SaveGames/0 directory. To roll back, stop the server, move the new folder out, restore the old folder’s original name and start the server. Keep only one active candidate inside 0 while testing, because multiple generated folders can make it unclear which save the server will select.

For long-running communities, retain at least one offline copy of Pal/Saved before the wipe and another copy after the new world has successfully started. A backup is useful only if you know which server installation or volume it belongs to and can restore it while the process is stopped.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a full wipe is the wrong fix

  • Choose a settings reset when the map and player progress are correct but rates, difficulty or server options need to return to defaults.
  • Choose a targeted configuration edit when only one option is wrong.
  • Use a host’s documented player-management feature when one player must be removed without affecting the community world.
  • Use a rollback when a recent update or file operation caused corruption; wiping first can destroy the evidence and the recoverable save.

The safest decision is to identify the smallest data set that solves the problem. A full world reset is appropriate when the group explicitly wants a fresh map and accepts permanent loss of the existing world.

Timing, permissions and maintenance checks

Schedule the wipe when no one is connected and allow time for a complete startup test. A normal stop gives Palworld time to finish writing its save; killing the process or deleting files during shutdown risks preserving an incomplete state. On Linux, verify that the service account owns or can write to the save directory. On Windows, make sure the account running the service has access to the SteamCMD library. In Docker, perform the backup on the host-mounted volume, not only inside the disposable container filesystem.

Do not assume that a folder named PalServer is the active installation. Multiple SteamCMD libraries, copied test servers and old containers can each contain a valid-looking Pal/Saved tree. Compare the directory with the executable or service working-directory setting, and look at file modification times after a test launch. The folder that changes during startup is the one to protect and reset.

A cautious test-wipe workflow

  1. Announce a maintenance window and record the current server version and settings.
  2. Stop the service, panel instance or container and wait for a confirmed stopped state.
  3. Copy Pal/Saved to storage outside the active installation. Label it with the date and server name.
  4. Rename the generated world folder instead of deleting it. Keep it outside SaveGames/0 so the server cannot select it accidentally.
  5. Start the server and wait for initialization to finish before connecting.
  6. Join with one test account, verify a blank character and unbuilt map, then test the password and important rates.
  7. Only after verification, invite the rest of the players. Retain both the pre-wipe backup and a copy of the confirmed new save.

This process adds a few minutes but separates a deliberate wipe from a path mistake. If the result is wrong, stop the server before any new gameplay writes and restore the original folder.

Frequently asked questions

Does deleting the 0 directory reset the world?

No. The target is normally the single randomly named folder inside Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/. Keep the 0 directory itself and remove or rename the generated child folder.

Can I reset the world by deleting only PalWorldSettings.ini?

No. Removing PalWorldSettings.ini and GameUserSettings.ini regenerates default configuration files, but the existing map and progress can remain. A new world requires removing the generated save folder.

  • Visit the Hall of Justice, the Batcave, and the Justice League Watchtower to access shops, trophy rooms, and the hero and vehicle customizers.

Why did my edited settings not take effect?

Settings are read at boot, and an established world may read values from WorldOption.sav. Stop the server before editing, keep the OptionSettings=(...) block on one line, and check the active world folder after making a backup.

Where is the save in Docker?

There is no single universal host path. Find the bind mount or named volume in the compose file or image documentation, stop the container, and work on the host directory that contains Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will a hosting panel’s reset button preserve my settings?

It depends on the provider. Read the confirmation text because a button labeled “reset” may remove only the map, configuration, or all server data. Download a backup and test the panel’s behavior before treating it as reversible.

Can I undo a wipe?

Only if you retained a copy or renamed the old folder. Stop the server, move the new folder out of SaveGames/0, restore the old folder’s original name, and start again. A permanently deleted folder cannot be recovered by Palworld itself.

Will map discovery definitely reset?

Most world progress should be new, but an older player report found map discovery persisted after other progress was cleared. Treat that behavior as build-dependent and verify it on a test copy if exploration state is important.

Why did the old save come back after I removed it?

You may have edited an inactive installation, a different Docker mount or a panel-managed copy. The host may also have restored an automatic snapshot. Stop the server, identify the path that changes during startup, and inspect backup or snapshot settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the safest way to wipe a Palworld dedicated server?

Stop the server normally, copy or rename the entire Pal/Saved directory, rename the generated folder under Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/, then start and test the new world before inviting players.

Does a world wipe delete characters and Pals?

A full wipe removes the world save, so characters, levels, inventories, captured Pals, bases, storage and other world progress should be treated as lost unless restored from backup.

What should I delete on SteamCMD?

Delete or rename the randomly named child folder inside Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/, not the 0 directory itself. Confirm the SteamCMD install path first.

How do I reset only server settings?

With the server stopped, back up and remove PalWorldSettings.ini and GameUserSettings.ini under the applicable LinuxServer or WindowsServer configuration directory. This does not create a new map.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is WorldOption.sav relevant?

An existing world can store many options in WorldOption.sav and use those values on later boots. Back up first and confirm its location before considering removal.

Is there one Docker path for Palworld saves?

No. The path depends on the image’s bind mount or named volume. Stop the container and use the host mapping that contains Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/.

How can I roll back after testing a new world?

Stop the server, move the new generated folder out of SaveGames/0, restore the old folder’s original name, and start again. Keep only one active candidate in that directory.

What if the reset clears characters but not map discovery?

An older report described that partial result. It is not a guarantee for current builds, so test on a copy and verify exploration behavior before announcing the wipe complete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For a safe Palworld server wipe, stop the server, back up Pal/Saved, rename or remove only the generated world folder under Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/, and start the server to generate a new save. Confirm the active path for SteamCMD, Docker or your hosting panel, and keep the backup until the new world and settings have been tested.
