For most first-time deployments and any installation that must stay online continuously, choose a small Linux VPS. It avoids laptop sleep, home-power interruptions and local-network failures, while remaining reachable from anywhere. Choose a Mac mini when OpenClaw must work directly with files on your network, control a visible browser window, use macOS-only software, or originate from a residential internet connection. A hybrid setup—a VPS Gateway paired with a Mac node—provides both dependable uptime and local Mac capabilities.
You do not need a Mac mini to run OpenClaw. OpenClaw supports macOS and Linux directly; Windows is supported through WSL2. The right host depends on which capabilities matter more than the operating system itself.

The decision at a glance
| Your priority | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 24/7 uptime and access from anywhere | Linux VPS | A hosted server is designed to remain online and is not affected by a laptop lid, sleep setting or household Wi-Fi outage. |
| Direct access to local files | Mac mini | OpenClaw runs beside the files and can use the Mac’s local environment without an extra node connection. |
| Visible browser automation | Mac mini | A local desktop can display and interact with a browser window; a VPS normally runs a headless browser. |
| macOS-only tools | Mac mini or hybrid | The Mac supplies the required operating system while the Gateway can remain on a VPS. |
| Residential IP for browser work | Mac mini | Some websites block or challenge data-center address ranges, whereas a home Mac uses the residential connection. |
| Lowest upfront commitment | VPS | You rent capacity monthly instead of purchasing dedicated hardware, although recurring hosting charges continue. |
| Cloud reliability plus local hardware | Hybrid | The VPS hosts the Gateway and the Mac is paired as a node for screen, camera, browser and system actions. |
What OpenClaw can run on
OpenClaw’s Gateway can run on a Mac, a Linux server, a home server or a Raspberry Pi-class computer. A Mac mini is therefore an optional deployment choice, not a prerequisite. Windows users can run OpenClaw through WSL2, but a native macOS or Linux host is simpler when you are choosing new hardware.

When a Mac mini is the better host
Local files and applications
A Mac mini is physically beside your documents, project folders, mounted drives and other macOS applications. That makes local-file workflows straightforward: there is no need to copy data to a server or expose a home folder to a remote machine. It is useful when the automation must read or edit files that should remain on your LAN.
A visible browser window
The most important practical difference between the two platforms is browser mode. A Mac can run a normal, visible browser session on its desktop. You can watch the session, complete an occasional visual check and use websites that behave differently when a full desktop is present. A VPS generally runs a headless browser, which is efficient but offers no local window to observe.
Residential networking
OpenClaw’s macOS virtual-machine guidance recommends dedicated hardware such as a Mac mini when browser automation needs a residential IP. Some sites block traffic from data-center ranges; running the browser from a home connection can avoid that particular restriction. This is not a guarantee that every site will allow automation, and it does not remove a site’s authentication, rate-limit or policy requirements.

macOS-only capabilities
If a workflow depends on software available only on macOS, the Mac must participate somewhere in the architecture. A dedicated mini avoids interrupting your daily laptop and can remain configured for automation. It also avoids the sleep and restart events that occur when a shared notebook is closed, moved or updated.

Mac mini limitations
- Hardware requires an upfront purchase and draws electricity continuously.
- A home deployment depends on household power, router availability and the stability of your internet connection.
- Remote administration is your responsibility; you may need screen sharing, secure shell access or another remote-management method.
- A visible desktop can be less convenient to operate unattended than a server designed for remote, headless use.
When a VPS is the better host
Always-on operation
A VPS is built for services that should stay online while you are away. It avoids laptop sleep and does not depend on a computer being left open on a desk. This is why OpenClaw’s official FAQ recommends a VPS when 24/7 reliability matters.
For a self-managed OpenClaw deployment, an Antihost VPS provides a one-click OpenClaw image, full root access and core regions in the USA East, the Netherlands and Ukraine.
Stable remote networking
The Gateway is reachable from anywhere through the provider’s network rather than through your home router. You do not have to arrange inbound access to a private LAN, and you can administer the server over SSH from another computer. A VPS is especially convenient when messages must be processed while you travel or when several people need to reach the same Gateway.

Messaging channels
WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Mattermost and Discord can run from a VPS. These channels do not require a Mac mini. The trade-off is not messaging support; it is whether your automation needs a headless browser or a visible local window.

VPS limitations
- Browser automation is normally headless, so there is no physical screen to inspect.
- Files on your Mac or home network are remote. You must copy them, mount storage securely or pair a local node.
- Administration is server-oriented: SSH keys, operating-system updates, firewall rules, backups and log management become part of the job.
- A data-center IP may be blocked by sites that restrict automated traffic from hosting ranges.
How much VPS capacity OpenClaw needs
OpenClaw’s published baseline is an absolute minimum of 1 vCPU, 1 GB of RAM and approximately 500 MB of disk. That minimum is suitable only for a very small installation with limited headroom. The same guidance recommends 1–2 vCPUs and at least 2 GB of RAM for logs, media and multiple channels.
| Workload | Starting point | What can increase the requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Minimal Gateway and one light channel | 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, about 500 MB disk | Extra logs, updates, concurrent tasks or media can exhaust this margin. |
| General-purpose deployment | 1–2 vCPUs, 2 GB or more RAM | Multiple channels, larger logs, media handling and simultaneous jobs. |
| Browser-heavy or media-heavy automation | More than the general-purpose baseline | Browser processes and media tools can consume substantially more CPU, memory and disk; size from observed usage rather than the minimum. |
Disk planning should include operating-system packages, OpenClaw data, browser caches, media and retained logs—not just the Gateway binary. If memory pressure causes processes to be killed or the browser to restart, move up to a larger plan before adding more channels.
The hybrid design: VPS Gateway plus Mac node
Hybrid deployment is the most flexible option when you need reliable cloud uptime and local Mac capabilities. The VPS keeps the Gateway online, receives channel events and coordinates work. The Mac connects as a node and provides local screen, camera, browser and system capabilities when a task calls for them.
What this solves
- The Gateway continues operating when nobody is home.
- Mac-only tools and local files remain on the Mac.
- A visible browser and residential connection are available for tasks that need them.
- You can add or remove local nodes without moving the central Gateway.
What it does not solve automatically
The Mac node still needs power, network access and a logged-in session for capabilities that depend on its desktop. If it sleeps or loses connectivity, VPS-hosted messaging can continue but Mac-specific actions will be unavailable until the node returns. Treat the node as an optional capability endpoint, not as a replacement for monitoring the Gateway.

Choosing by common use case
You want a simple first deployment
Start with a small Linux VPS. It has fewer physical dependencies and lets you learn OpenClaw without purchasing hardware. Begin at the published 1–2 vCPU and 2 GB-or-more recommendation if you expect multiple channels, logs or media.
You need OpenClaw to work with a home document folder
Use a Mac mini as the primary host, or use the hybrid design if the Gateway must remain reachable during a home outage. Keep sensitive folders local and grant only the access the workflow requires.
You automate sites that reject cloud addresses
Use a Mac connected through the residential network, either as the main host or as a node behind a VPS Gateway. Confirm that the site permits your automation; a residential address changes network origin but does not override the site’s rules.
You need iMessage
You need access to a Mac signed in to Messages, but the Gateway itself does not have to run on that Mac. A Linux Gateway can call the Mac through an SSH wrapper that invokes imsg. A Mac mini is convenient as the always-available Messages computer, but the requirement is a Mac signed in to Messages—not specifically a Mac mini hosting OpenClaw.

Path A: Run everything on a Mac mini
- Install macOS updates and place the Mac mini where it has dependable power and wired or reliable Wi-Fi networking.
- Install OpenClaw and configure the Gateway on the Mac.
- Set the Mac to remain available for the workflows you need; account for sleep, logout and automatic-restart settings.
- Connect your messaging channels and test each one while watching the local browser or desktop actions.
- Protect the machine with a separate automation account where practical, least-privilege file permissions and macOS updates.
- Test recovery after a reboot and after a temporary internet outage before relying on the setup unattended.
Path B: Run the Gateway on a Linux VPS
- Create a Linux VPS that meets at least the published baseline; choose 2 GB or more of RAM when you expect logs, media or multiple channels.
- Use SSH keys and restrict administrative access. Apply operating-system security updates before exposing the service.
- Install OpenClaw and configure the Gateway as a service that starts after a reboot.
- Connect the required channels and verify message delivery from a separate network.
- Monitor memory, disk growth and service logs. Increase the VPS size if browser or media processes consume the available headroom.
- Keep backups of configuration and any required credentials, stored separately from the server.
Path C: Use a VPS Gateway with a Mac node
- Deploy and test the Gateway on the Linux VPS first so messaging works independently of the Mac.
- Prepare the Mac with the local files, browser profile, camera or macOS tools the workflows require.
- Pair the Mac as a node using OpenClaw’s node mechanism and limit which capabilities the Gateway may invoke.
- Test a cloud-only task with the Mac offline, then test a local task with the Mac online. This confirms that failures are isolated correctly.
- Set up alerts or a manual check for node availability so you know when a local capability has disappeared.
Cost and ownership
There is no universal Mac-mini-versus-VPS break-even point in the official guidance. A Mac mini combines an upfront hardware purchase with ongoing electricity and your existing home-internet cost. A VPS replaces that purchase with recurring hosting charges. The comparison changes with the Mac configuration, electricity rates, storage, bandwidth, backup needs and how long you keep the system.
Model these items separately before deciding:
- Initial Mac hardware and any peripherals needed for a dedicated setup.
- Electricity for a machine that remains powered.
- Monthly VPS capacity, backups and additional storage.
- Model or API usage, which is separate from hosting or hardware.
- Bandwidth and media retention if the Gateway handles large files.
- Your time maintaining a home computer versus a remote Linux server.
Reliability, security and troubleshooting
Preventing unexpected downtime
- Give the Gateway a restart-tested service configuration.
- Watch disk usage because logs, browser caches and media grow over time.
- Keep credentials out of shared folders and restrict file permissions.
- Document how to restore the Gateway and reconnect a node.
- For a Mac, test behavior after sleep, logout, reboot and router restart.
- For a VPS, test behavior after provider maintenance or a forced reboot.
If the VPS is online but a browser task fails
First determine whether the task requires a visible window or a residential address. If it does, move that step to a Mac node rather than repeatedly resizing the VPS. If the task is headless-compatible, inspect memory and CPU usage, browser logs and the target site’s authentication or rate limits.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf local-file actions fail in a hybrid setup
Check that the Mac node is connected, awake and logged in, then verify that the requested folder is available to the account running the node. Cloud messaging can continue while the node is offline, so distinguish a node outage from a Gateway outage.
If iMessage is unavailable
Confirm that the Mac is signed in to Messages and reachable from the Linux host. The Linux Gateway depends on the SSH wrapper and the Mac-side imsg invocation; either the connection or the Mac session can be the failing component.
A practical selection checklist
- Choose a VPS if uninterrupted remote access is your first requirement.
- Choose a Mac mini if local files, a visible browser, residential networking or macOS-only software are central to the workflow.
- Choose hybrid when you need both categories and can keep a Mac node reliably connected.
- Do not buy a Mac mini solely for WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Mattermost or Discord; those channels work from a VPS.
- Do not size a VPS only by the 1 GB minimum if you expect media, logs, multiple channels or browser automation.
- For iMessage, provide a Mac signed in to Messages; the Gateway may remain on Linux.
Bottom line
A small Linux VPS is the sensible default for most OpenClaw users because it provides always-on operation and remote access without buying or maintaining local hardware. A Mac mini is the specialized choice for local files, visible browser control, residential networking and macOS-only functions. When both matter, keep the Gateway on the VPS and pair the Mac as a node.
