- A computer that can remain on while people play, with enough free storage for the world, mods, logs, and backups.
- Java SE 17 installed system-wide. Minecraft 1.20.1 requires Java 17 as its minimum in the Minecraft Wiki documentation.
- The exact modpack release and its required loader: Forge 1.20.1 or Fabric 1.20.1.
- Router access if players will connect from outside your home network.
- Your computer’s local network address and permission to allow Java through the operating-system firewall.
Download the server files from the loader or modpack distributor you trust. A modpack’s own server bundle is preferable when available because it may include a tested set of configuration files and a run.bat or start.sh launcher.
Forge or Fabric: choose the loader your pack specifies
Forge and Fabric are different mod-loading platforms. They are not interchangeable, and a Forge pack cannot be started with a Fabric server. The loader and Minecraft version must match the pack exactly: a 1.20.1 pack needs a 1.20.1 Forge or Fabric server, not a 1.20.0, 1.20.2, or another loader.

Forge 1.20.1
Run the Forge installer for Minecraft 1.20.1, select the server-install option, and choose a new, empty folder. The installer places the Forge server libraries and launcher files there. If the modpack provides its own server package, use its included files instead of replacing them with a generic Forge installation; packs can require a particular Forge build and configuration.
Fabric 1.20.1
Open the Fabric installer, switch to the Server tab, choose Minecraft 1.20.1, and install into the server folder. Add the Fabric API version required by the pack to the folder named mods. Fabric itself is only the loader; most Fabric packs also require that API library.

Use a pack-provided launcher when one exists
Server bundles commonly include a Windows run.bat or a Linux/macOS start.sh. These scripts may set the correct loader, Java flags, and classpath for that pack. Read the script before editing it, and keep a copy of the original so you can restore it if a change prevents startup.
Install and verify Java 17
Install a 64-bit Java SE 17 runtime or JDK on the machine that will run the server. The server uses the Java installed on that machine; it does not automatically use the Java bundled inside a third-party launcher on your gaming computer.
After installation, open a terminal or command prompt and run:
java -version
The output should identify Java 17. If the command is not found, add Java’s bin directory to the operating system’s PATH, or call the full path to the Java executable from your launch script.
Java 17 is the documented minimum for 1.20.1. Some community guides mention Java 21, but compatibility depends on the individual loader and pack. Follow the pack author’s stated version when it differs. A Forge community report describes startup errors after moving to JDK 22, so upgrading beyond the pack’s documented version is not a safe troubleshooting shortcut.

Create the server and accept the EULA
- Put the Forge or Fabric server files in a dedicated folder, such as
Minecraft-1.20.1. Do not store the server in your client’s saves folder. - Start the server once using the supplied script or launcher. If no script is supplied, use the loader’s generated server launcher and include
noguiif you do not need the graphical console. - The first launch normally stops after creating files, including
eula.txt. This is expected. - Open
eula.txt, changeeula=falsetoeula=true, save the file, and restart the server. - Read the console for a message that the server has finished loading. The first world generation can take considerably longer than later starts.
Accepting the EULA is required for the server software to continue. The official Minecraft EULA allows installing the server software to host online play; it also distinguishes modified server software from mods. Do not redistribute modified copies of the server software, and review the current EULA yourself if you are operating a public service.
Allocate RAM deliberately
Java heap flags control the memory available to the server. -Xms is the initial heap and -Xmx is the maximum heap. The Minecraft Wiki lists 1 GB as a basic server minimum, while its setup tutorial recommends at least 2 GB for a small server. Modded worlds, view distance, terrain generation, and simultaneous players can push the requirement much higher.
| Workload | Practical starting point | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Unmodded or very small test server | 1–2 GB | The Wiki’s 1 GB minimum is for a basic server; 2 GB is the setup tutorial’s small-server recommendation. |
| Light modpack and a few players | Begin around 4 GB and observe usage | Secondary guides disagree on exact mod-count ranges, so treat this as a starting allocation rather than a rule. |
| Large content pack or more players | Increase in stages, often 6–8 GB or more | Chunk loading, entities, and the pack’s own documentation matter more than a mod-count number. |
| Very large packs | 8–12 GB is cited for some 80–150-mod examples | Those figures come from secondary guides and are recommendations, not a published benchmark; another guide lists 10–14 GB for 150–300 mods. |
Never assign all of the host’s memory to Java. Leave room for the operating system, file cache, the Java process outside the heap, and other services. A machine with 8 GB of physical RAM should not normally give the server all 8 GB.
A launch command might look like this:
java -Xms4G -Xmx6G -jar fabric-server-launch.jar nogui
That example is from a secondary guide and is not a universal requirement. Setting -Xms equal to -Xmx can avoid heap resizing, but it reserves the full amount immediately. Start conservatively, watch memory use and lag, then adjust after real play sessions.
Start scripts for Windows and Linux
Windows
In the server folder, create or edit a file named start.bat only if the pack does not supply one. Keep the command on one line and pause after exit so an error remains visible:
java -Xms4G -Xmx6G -jar server-launcher.jar nogui
pause
Use the exact launcher filename generated by your Forge or Fabric installation. If the pack’s script contains additional arguments, preserve them unless its documentation says they are optional.
Linux or macOS
Use the supplied start.sh when present. Otherwise, create a shell script with your chosen memory values and launcher filename, then make it executable:

Run the server inside a terminal multiplexer or a service manager if it must stay online after you disconnect. A simple terminal window closes the process when the session ends unless you deliberately keep it running.
Install the actual mods and configuration
Copy the server-compatible mods into the server’s mods directory. Use the versions specified by the pack, including required dependency libraries. Do not blindly copy every file from your client’s mods folder: visual and performance mods intended only for clients can cause dedicated-server crashes.
- Content and gameplay mods: normally belong on both server and client, with matching versions.
- Client-only mods: such as many rendering optimizers, stay on each player’s computer and should not be placed on the server unless the mod author explicitly supports dedicated servers.
- Configuration files: copy the pack’s server configuration exactly when supplied. Generate a fresh world only after confirming the configuration is in place.
Every player should install the same Minecraft 1.20.1 version, loader version, mod versions, and pack configuration. A client can sometimes join with extra client-only files, but a missing gameplay dependency or mismatched version commonly produces a handshake error or immediate disconnect.
Configure the world and server properties
After the first successful start, stop the server cleanly by typing stop in its console. Edit server.properties while the server is stopped. Set the level name, difficulty, game mode, view distance, simulation distance, and whitelist policy to suit your group. Modpacks may add their own configuration files; change one setting at a time and keep a backup before experimenting.
Do not increase view or simulation distance simply because the host has unused RAM. These settings increase CPU work and chunk activity, which can create tick lag even when heap usage appears comfortable. Generate a new test world when evaluating a major pack change so that a failed experiment does not damage your established save.
Make the server reachable from outside your home
Assign the host a stable local address
Give the server computer a DHCP reservation in your router, or configure a static local address. Port-forwarding rules break when the computer receives a different address after a reboot.
Forward TCP port 25565
Create a router rule that forwards TCP 25565 to the server computer’s local address. The default Minecraft server port is 25565; if you change server-port in server.properties, forward that replacement port instead. Allow the Java server through the host firewall for private and, where appropriate, public networks.

Give players the right address
Players on your home network can usually connect to the server’s local address. Players elsewhere need your public IP address (or a DNS name that points to it) and the forwarded port. Never publish your public address more widely than necessary, and avoid exposing unrelated router services.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Some internet providers place customers behind carrier-grade NAT, which prevents inbound forwarding even when router settings look correct. If outside players cannot connect after you have confirmed the firewall and forwarding rule, ask the provider whether you have a public IPv4 address. A managed server or a private overlay network may be the practical alternative.
Home hosting versus a managed server
| Factor | Home computer | Managed host |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Full access to files, Java, mods, and performance settings. | Usually provides a control panel with defined limits and supported versions. |
| Cost pattern | No monthly server rental, but uses your electricity, bandwidth, and hardware. | Recurring fee; hardware and network service are supplied for you. |
| Setup work | You install Java, configure the loader, forward ports, and maintain backups. | The provider may offer one-click pack installation, but you still manage compatibility and world data. |
| Availability | Depends on your power, internet connection, and whether the computer stays on. | Designed for continuous operation, subject to the provider’s maintenance and outage policy. |
Choose home hosting when you want direct control and can maintain the machine and network. Choose a managed service when port forwarding, uptime, or hardware maintenance is the main obstacle. Whichever route you choose, retain your own world and configuration backups.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Backups, permissions, and safe operation
- Stop the server before copying the world folder, or use a backup method that guarantees a consistent snapshot.
- Keep at least one backup away from the server computer. Test restoring it on a separate copy rather than assuming the files are usable.
- Enable the whitelist for a private group and add players deliberately. Grant operator status only to people who need administrative commands.
- Do not run the server as an administrator or root account unless there is a specific, documented reason.
- Update mods and the loader only after making a backup and checking the pack’s changelog. Test updates in a disposable world first.
- Monitor disk space. World growth, crash reports, logs, and automatic backups can fill a small drive unexpectedly.
Troubleshooting common failures
The server says Java is the wrong version
Run java -version in the same terminal or script that starts the server. A launcher may point to a different Java executable than your interactive shell. Install or select Java 17, then update the script to use that executable explicitly. If the pack documents another version, follow that requirement instead of guessing.
The process stops immediately after the first launch
Open eula.txt and confirm it contains exactly eula=true. Check that the file is in the same folder as the server launcher and that the account running Java can write there. A read-only folder or editing the wrong copy of the file produces the same first-run behavior.
Forge crashes while loading mods
Read logs/latest.log from the failed run. The final error often identifies a missing dependency, an incorrect Minecraft or Forge version, or a client-only mod placed on the server. Remove or correct one suspect at a time, then restart. For packs with unusually slow loading, a secondary guide suggests adding -Dfml.readTimeout=120 -Dfml.loginTimeout=120 before -jar; treat those flags as a pack-specific experiment, not a universal fix.
Fabric reports missing modules or refuses a connection
Confirm that Fabric API is present in the server’s mods directory and that its version matches Minecraft 1.20.1. Compare the server and client mod lists for missing gameplay dependencies. The server log normally names the module that failed.
Best Value
Players time out or cannot see the server
- Test a connection from the same home network using the server’s local address.
- Confirm the server is listening on the configured port and that the operating-system firewall allows Java.
- Check that the router forwards TCP 25565 to the host’s current local address.
- Have an outside player test your public address, not the local address.
- If local connections work but outside connections fail, investigate carrier-grade NAT or an upstream firewall.
The server starts but lags badly
Lower view and simulation distance, temporarily remove the heaviest world-generation additions, and watch CPU, memory, and disk usage during a busy period. Increasing -Xmx helps only when the server is actually running out of heap; it cannot fix a CPU bottleneck or a slow storage device. Generate new chunks before inviting a full group so initial exploration does not overwhelm the machine.
Changing packs or upgrading later
Treat a modpack change as a migration, not a simple file replacement. Stop the server, make a complete backup, record the current loader and mod versions, and read the pack author’s migration notes. Removing a content mod can delete or invalidate blocks and items in existing chunks. Test the new files on a copy of the world before opening the original to players.
Do not assume that a 1.20.1 world can be opened safely by a different Minecraft version. Keep the server, client, loader, and pack version aligned until you have verified a planned upgrade and retained a restorable backup.
Frequently asked questions
Can I run Forge and Fabric mods together?
Not in a normal dedicated server. Select the loader required by the pack; use a separately supported compatibility layer only when the pack author explicitly provides one.
Is Java 21 guaranteed to work with every 1.20.1 pack?
No. Compatibility varies by loader, mod, and pack. Java 17 is the documented baseline for 1.20.1, and the pack’s own instructions take precedence. Avoid jumping to Java 22 merely because it is newer.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do players need to install client-only performance mods?
Only if they want the client-side feature. Such mods generally stay on the player’s computer, while gameplay and content dependencies must match the server.
Why does a server need the EULA file if nobody has joined yet?
The server software checks the agreement before it completes startup. A first run creates eula.txt with eula=false; changing it to eula=true is the required acknowledgement.
Can I use a different port instead of 25565?
Yes. Change server-port in server.properties, allow that port through the firewall, and forward the same TCP port in the router. Players must include the non-default port when connecting.
Final checklist
- Java 17 (or the pack’s explicitly documented version) is installed on the host.
- The loader and Minecraft version are exactly 1.20.1 and match the modpack.
- The first run completed,
eula=trueis saved, and the server starts without a crash. - RAM flags leave sufficient memory for the operating system and are adjusted to the actual pack and player load.
- Server-compatible mods and dependencies are installed; client-only files are not being forced onto the dedicated server.
- The host has a stable local address, the firewall allows Java, and TCP 25565 is forwarded when remote players are expected.
- Players use the same pack files, and a tested backup exists before anyone begins a long-term world.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a 1.20.1 server use the Java bundled with my launcher?
The dedicated server runs on Java installed on the host machine. A launcher’s bundled Java may be unrelated, so verify the executable used by your server script with java -version.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What should I check first when a modpack crashes?
Open logs/latest.log and read the final error. It commonly points to a missing dependency, a loader/version mismatch, or a client-only mod installed on the server.
