At OpenAI DevDay in San Francisco on September 29, 2026, the company’s new Dots agent acknowledged a request for a recap of user testing but did not deliver the recap during the exchange described by Futurism. That reported onstage stumble shows a delay in one demonstration; it does not establish why it happened or how reliably Dots works in general.

What happened in the Dots demonstration?

Futurism reported that Holly Li, a member of OpenAI’s product team, called Dots on her phone during DevDay and asked, “Can you catch me up on just user testing from last night?” The agent replied, “Checking that now,” but did not provide the recap in the exchange described. When Li asked how it was going, the agent answered, “still checking.” Li then joked, “I guess Dottie’s having a slow morning.”

Those lines are quotations as reported by Futurism, which published its account on September 30, 2026. OpenAI’s DevDay event page confirms the event took place September 29 at Fort Mason in San Francisco, but does not independently verify the demonstration details.

What is OpenAI Dots?

OpenAI describes a dot as an always-on agent in ChatGPT that can take responsibility for an ongoing goal and continue making progress between conversations. According to the Help Center, dots are powered by GPT-6 Astra, use a cloud computer, can work with apps a user connects, and retain context for continuing work. Users set goals and define what a dot may do independently; they can review results, and the agent can seek human judgment when needed. OpenAI’s Deployment Safety Hub likewise describes dots as always-on agents with a cloud computer, browser, and connected tools.

Does this show that Dots is unreliable?

No. In the reported exchange, the agent failed to return a prompt answer to a specific request. That is a meaningful shortcoming for an agent presented as able to carry work forward, but one public demonstration is not a reliability study. The available account does not establish whether the task eventually completed, what caused the delay, or how often similar delays occur.

Futurism’s story and OpenAI’s product materials provide no incident explanation or diagnostic record. They do not establish a network problem, service outage, system-wide failure, or typical performance. Nor is there an independent reliability measurement here with which to compare Dots to another agent.

Who can use Dots?

OpenAI’s Help Center describes a gradual rollout whose availability depends on plan and region. At the time that page was accessed, it listed Pro rollout outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom; Business Premium availability in supported ChatGPT regions; and Enterprise beta access when a workspace administrator enables it. The page also said eligible usage would not count toward plan allowances for the next month, with later usage terms to be shared. These details can change, so consult the current Help Center page for eligibility and usage terms.

Futurism reported that Dots was being held behind a $100-per-month tier “at least for now.” That claim is not confirmed by the Help Center information cited above, which describes access across multiple plans without naming that price. Treat it as Futurism’s report, not as a verified current price.
