At launch, text use was rolling out through ChatGPT and the API, while image input remained limited to a research preview. OpenAI reported stronger results than GPT-3.5 on demanding evaluations, but also warned that GPT-4 can invent facts and make reasoning errors.
What GPT-4 is
GPT-4 is a large language model developed by OpenAI. In its March 2023 announcement, OpenAI described it as a “large multimodal model”: it can take text and image inputs and generate text outputs. That description captures the model’s intended capability, not universal access to every input type; image input was not generally available when GPT-4 was announced.

OpenAI said GPT-4 showed human-level performance on various professional and academic benchmarks, while also emphasizing that it remained less capable than people in many real-world situations. Benchmark performance should therefore be read as performance on particular tests, not proof that the model can reliably do a profession’s work. OpenAI’s GPT-4 announcement provides the launch-era description.

How GPT-4 differed from GPT-3.5
OpenAI’s comparison was not that GPT-4 would make every ordinary exchange dramatically better. It said the difference could be subtle in casual conversation and more apparent once a task became sufficiently complex. OpenAI characterized GPT-4 as more reliable, creative, and capable of following nuanced instructions than GPT-3.5; those are comparative claims, not guarantees for a particular user or task.
#1 Best Overall
- Inputs: GPT-4 was described as accepting text and images, whereas the launch rollout exposed text capability first. Image input was in limited alpha / research preview.
- Complex work: OpenAI said improvements were more visible on difficult tasks than in casual conversation.
- Evaluation: OpenAI reported higher results on several professional and academic benchmarks, including a simulated bar exam.
- Reliability: GPT-4 still makes factual and reasoning errors, and its safeguards do not remove that risk.
What the bar-exam result does—and does not—show
OpenAI reported that GPT-4 scored around the top 10% of simulated bar-exam test takers, compared with around the bottom 10% for GPT-3.5. The comparison refers to a simulated exam result reported by OpenAI in 2023; it is not a forecast of performance as a lawyer, a measure of client outcomes, or evidence of broad professional equivalence.
OpenAI said its evaluations used recent publicly available tests or purchased 2022–2023 practice-exam editions and that it did not specifically train GPT-4 for those exams. It also acknowledged that a minority of exam problems had been seen during training. The methodology and caveat matter: an exam score is evidence about a defined test, not a substitute for evaluating the model in the actual setting where someone plans to use it. See the announcement’s benchmark discussion.
How OpenAI said GPT-4 was trained—and what it did not disclose
OpenAI’s 2023 technical report says GPT-4 was pretrained to predict the next token using publicly available data, including internet data, as well as data licensed from third-party providers. OpenAI then fine-tuned it using reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF).
The report does not disclose the model’s size, hardware, training compute, dataset construction, or comparable implementation details. It says these details were withheld because of competitive considerations and the safety implications of large-scale models. As a result, readers should not treat specific claims about GPT-4’s parameter count or training hardware as established by OpenAI’s published report. Read the GPT-4 Technical Report.

Safety work and remaining limitations
OpenAI said it spent six months on iterative alignment work, including adversarial testing and feedback. In a March 2023 release overview, it reported that GPT-4 was 82% less likely than GPT-3.5 to respond to requests for disallowed content and 40% more likely to produce factual responses in OpenAI’s internal evaluations. These are OpenAI-reported internal comparison figures, not independent test results or a promise that a response will be safe or correct. OpenAI’s release overview describes those evaluations.
OpenAI explicitly warned that GPT-4 is not fully reliable: it can hallucinate facts and make reasoning errors. Its release materials also identify social biases and adversarial prompts as limitations. The technical report discusses broader risks including disinformation, over-reliance, privacy, cybersecurity, and proliferation. Mitigations such as expert adversarial testing and a model-assisted safety pipeline can reduce some risks, but do not eliminate them.

For consequential work, the appropriate safeguards depend on the use: a human may need to verify outputs, the model may need additional trusted context, or it may be unsuitable for the task. OpenAI also released Evals, an open-source framework intended to help people create benchmarks, inspect model performance sample by sample, identify shortcomings, and guard against regressions. Evaluation can reveal weaknesses; it does not itself make a model dependable.

On March 14, 2023, OpenAI said GPT-4 text capability was being released through ChatGPT and its API. ChatGPT Plus access then had a usage cap, and API access was through a waitlist. Image input was still a limited alpha / research preview. These describe the original rollout, not current access terms.
OpenAI later announced API general availability for eligible developers with a history of successful payments. The announcement page, updated April 24, 2024, described access to GPT-4 with an 8K context window at that time. Neither that historical notice nor the 2023 launch page establishes today’s model names, availability, limits, or prices; check OpenAI’s current product and API information before relying on access details. OpenAI’s API availability announcement is the dated record.
