OpenAI documents three low-latency connection options—WebRTC, WebSocket, and SIP. Your first implementation choices are how to connect, what to put in the session configuration, and how the session should handle spoken input and generated audio.
What the Realtime API enables
OpenAI describes the Realtime API as a way to “communicate with a multimodal model in real time over low latency interfaces like WebRTC, WebSocket, and SIP.” It supports speech-to-speech interaction and text, image, and audio input and output, making it a foundation for interactive voice and multimodal applications. See the Realtime API reference for current capabilities and configuration.

A Realtime session is the interaction context for a connection. Its configuration can specify the model, instructions, input and output audio settings, output modalities, and voice. Decide these before beginning a conversation: in particular, the voice cannot be changed after the session has generated audio.

The documented interfaces are WebRTC, WebSocket, and SIP. The reference establishes these as connection options, but does not provide a universal ranking or a complete deployment comparison. Choose according to your application’s topology and whether you are building an app-based experience or integrating with phone calls; verify the current operational and security requirements for your chosen path in the official documentation.

| WebRTC | The API reference documents creating a call by sending an SDP offer to POST /v1/realtime/calls. The request can include session configuration, and the response supplies an SDP answer. |
How your client and server exchange the offer and answer, and the current requirements for session setup. |
| WebSocket | Listed as a low-latency interface to the Realtime API. | Whether its connection model fits your client/server design and the current connection and event requirements. |
| SIP | Listed as a low-latency interface to the Realtime API. | How the connection fits your phone-call workflow and what telephony and SIP configuration it requires. |
Set up a WebRTC call
For the WebRTC call flow, the documented endpoint is POST /v1/realtime/calls. Send an SDP offer; session configuration is optional in that request. The response provides an SDP answer. This describes the endpoint exchange, not every step required to create a working application connection.
- Prepare the offer. Create the SDP offer as part of your WebRTC setup.
- Send the offer to the Realtime calls endpoint. Make a
POSTrequest to/v1/realtime/callsand include the offer. Add session configuration when you need to set the session as part of call creation. - Use the returned answer. The endpoint response supplies an SDP answer for the call flow.
For exact request and response shapes, consult the current API reference. The reference is the authority for endpoint details; the high-level flow here is not a substitute for its required fields or current setup guidance.

Configure the first session
Session settings determine how the model should interact and how audio is handled. The API reference documents configuration choices including the model, instructions, input and output audio details, output modalities, and voice. Use the live reference when building the request because supported options can change.
Instructions and modalities
Use the instructions field to define the agent’s behavior. Set output modalities to match what the application needs, and check the current reference for accepted values and how they relate to audio and text output.

Audio and voice
The reference lists the built-in voices alloy, ash, ballad, coral, echo, sage, shimmer, verse, marin, and cedar, and recommends marin and cedar. These are documented choices, not a guarantee that the list will remain unchanged. Select a voice before the session generates audio: after audio has been generated, the voice cannot be changed for that session. Check the current configuration reference for supported audio options.
Understand speech detection
The API reference describes server-side voice activity detection as activating when user speech is detected and stopping after a period of silence. This is a session behavior to account for when designing turn-taking. The precise threshold behavior and interruption design are implementation details; consult the relevant current API documentation rather than assuming a particular timing or tuning behavior.

Start with the official JavaScript SDK
OpenAI’s developer quickstart identifies an official TypeScript/JavaScript SDK for server-side JavaScript environments, including Node.js, Deno, and Bun. It presents the Realtime API as an option for interactive voice and multimodal apps. Use the developer quickstart for SDK and API setup, then rely on the Realtime API reference for session, endpoint, and connection details. The quickstart is an entry point, not a complete Realtime implementation tutorial.
