OpenAI plans to test labeled visual ads during ChatGPT image generation in the United States later in October 2026, with an initial group of advertisers. The company also announced new measurement and brand-suitability partnerships. The test is planned, not a completed rollout; OpenAI has not named the advertisers or given an exact start date.
What are the new visual ads in ChatGPT?
In its October 5, 2026 announcement, OpenAI described a visual ad format intended to let advertisers show product inspiration, uses, or experiences while someone is generating an image in ChatGPT. OpenAI says the ad will be labeled and kept separate from the image being created. The announcement does not specify the final layout, dimensions, or interaction options.

OpenAI says advertising does not influence ChatGPT’s answers. That is the company’s stated product policy, not an independent assessment of how the system behaves.
The planned visual test is limited to the United States at launch. OpenAI’s broader advertising platform had expanded to more than 40 countries and more than 50 technology and measurement partners by an August 2026 update; those figures describe the wider platform, not the visual test’s availability.

How does the visual test relate to existing ChatGPT ads?
OpenAI’s current Ads Help Center guide describes ads appearing below ChatGPT responses, with advertiser name, logo, headline, description, landing page, and image creative as ad-unit elements. That guide explains the existing product; the October announcement does not confirm that every placement or buying detail will apply identically to the new image-generation format.
The guide says ads are not shown to people on Plus, Pro, or Business plans, or to accounts identified as belonging to users under 18. It says ad selection can consider conversation context and intent, the ad’s landing page, title and copy, advertiser context hints, and—when personalization is enabled—selected signals from the broader ChatGPT experience. Context hints guide matching; they are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee an ad will appear in a particular conversation.
How will advertisers measure ChatGPT ad conversions?
OpenAI’s announcement groups measurement connections by purpose. The named companies are partner examples, not a ranking, and the announcement does not establish that every vendor offers the same functions.

The partner announcement reports several early campaign findings, but they should be read as partner-reported examples rather than proof that ChatGPT Ads caused a particular outcome. OpenAI does not provide sample sizes, full attribution methods, campaign dates, or a common comparison design for these figures.
- DV Rockerbox reported that WeightWatchers’ ChatGPT Ads campaign had a 15.3% lower attributed cost per acquisition than its blended paid-search benchmark.
- WorkMagic reported statistically significant lift for wellness brand Dose, with 67% of incremental purchases coming from net-new customers.
- Triple Whale reported that 93% of visitors from ChatGPT Ads were new for Portland Leather.
OpenAI also cited a reach of 1.2 billion people each week. This is an OpenAI-published figure in the announcement, not an independently verified audience estimate there.
What counts as a measured conversion?
OpenAI’s Conversion Measurement documentation says a conversion is reported when OpenAI receives an event through a connected source, the event matches a configured campaign conversion, it falls within the applicable attribution window, and available signals connect it to an eligible ad click.
Rank #3
The click reference is called oppref. The OpenAI Pixel can capture it, and advertisers can include it in Conversions API calls when it is available. OpenAI recommends using the Pixel and API together for more resilient measurement. If the same conversion is sent through both, the advertiser should use the same event ID so it can be deduplicated.

Its automatic advanced matching feature normalizes and hashes supported information in the browser rather than sending raw customer information through that feature. Where available, modeled measurement may also be used, so reported totals can include modeled conversions.
Click-through and view-through are not interchangeable
OpenAI’s Measurement Pixel documentation distinguishes click-through conversions, which use the configured click window, from view-through conversions. When view-through reporting is available for an account, it uses a fixed one-day window after an eligible ad impression. Those conversions are reported separately and excluded from the “Conversions” total. CPA, post-click conversion rate, bidding, billing, and conversion optimization remain click-through based.

Why platform totals can differ
OpenAI warns that Ads Manager, analytics providers, and other ad platforms can report different totals because they may use different attribution methods and windows, timestamps and time zones, browser, consent, or storage conditions, deduplication rules, and campaign or event configurations. Compare totals only after checking those settings; a difference by itself does not establish that one system is wrong.
How should an advertiser compare measurement options?
Start with the decision the measurement is meant to support, then check implementation fit and definitions before comparing reported results. The announcement does not provide enough information to rank vendors or compare their prices.

Separate event transfer, web or app attribution, full-funnel analysis, incrementality testing, and brand-suitability evaluation; they address different needs.
- Check web and app coverage. Confirm that the integration supports the advertiser’s actual environment and the events it wants to send.
- Align attribution definitions. Check click and view-through windows and whether view-through results are separate from the main conversion total.
- Verify event handling. Confirm how the system passes `oppref`, uses event IDs for deduplication, and handles missing click references.
- Review data-use terms. Assess privacy, consent, and data-use terms for the advertiser’s setup rather than assuming they are identical across providers.
What does OpenAI say about brand suitability and privacy?
OpenAI says its placement safeguards are designed to keep ads away from emotionally vulnerable, sensitive, or otherwise unsuitable contexts, using automated review, human oversight, and ongoing monitoring. It says qualifying advertisers can use Negative Phrases for narrow placement requirements.
Best Value
DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science are evaluating safeguard application in controlled pilots without access to private conversations. These are planned evaluations, not a completed independent certification of the system.
What existing buying guidance applies?
OpenAI’s current Help Center guide describes impression and valid-click billing, campaign options called Views, Clicks, and Conversions, and maximum CPM or CPC bids. It recommends starting with a maximum CPC bid of $3–$5 USD per click. That is OpenAI’s guidance, not a market-wide benchmark, and the visual-format announcement does not say whether the same buying setup applies to the test.
The guide says beta Ads Manager reporting includes impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, average CPC, average CPM, and conversions. It says impressions, clicks, and CTR refresh about every 15 minutes, while spend can be delayed 7–8 hours. Interface behavior can change, so advertisers should check the current Help Center guidance before relying on those operational details.
