Two meteor showers are active in October 2026, but they have different best viewing times. The short-lived Draconids peak just after dark on Oct. 8 into early Oct. 9, while the stronger, longer-lasting Orionids peak on the night of Oct. 21–22. The Draconids’ peak is close to the new Moon and should have dark skies; the Orionids face substantial moonlight until the Moon sets. Neither is established as one of the year’s best overall, but the Orionids are October’s main meteor-shower event.
Which meteor shower is underway tonight?
As of Oct. 7, 2026, both the Draconids and Orionids are active. The Draconids run from Oct. 6 to 10, with their peak expected the following evening. The Orionids are visible from Oct. 2 through Nov. 7, with their peak still more than two weeks away. If you are going out tonight, you may see either shower, but the Draconids are the nearer event.

| Shower | 2026 peak | Best viewing time | Moon conditions | Expected rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Draconids | Evening of Oct. 8 into early Oct. 9 | After dark | Near the Oct. 10 new Moon, so interference should be slight | Estimates vary: about 5 to 15 per hour, depending on source and conditions |
| Orionids | Night of Oct. 21 into Oct. 22; EarthSky predicts the peak at 18:00 UTC on Oct. 21 | Best after the Moon sets, around 3 a.m. local time on peak mornings | Bright waxing gibbous Moon before moonset; full Moon follows on Oct. 25–26 | Up to about 20 per hour under ideal dark skies; NASA estimates about 3–6 per hour for suburban viewers |
Peak times reported in EDT or UTC do not translate to one local clock time worldwide. Check a local calendar and moonset time for your location. Clear skies and a dark observing site matter more than the forecast rate.

The Draconids are expected to peak from about 9 p.m. EDT on Thursday, Oct. 8, into early Friday, Oct. 9, according to Farmers’ Almanac’s 2026 forecast, also reported by Starlust. The shower’s radiant—the point in the sky from which meteors seem to originate—is in Draco. Unlike many meteor showers, the Draconids are best watched in the evening, not just before dawn.
#1 Best Overall
- EASY-TO-USE ASTRONOMY BINOCULARS FOR BEGINNERS: Cometron 7x50 binoculars are an easy, affordable way to learn the night sky and get started with astronomy.
- 7X MAGNIFICATION: With a wide field of view that reveals a larger portion of the night sky, Cometron is ideal for panning across the Milky Way, exploring constellations, and viewing large objects like comets.
- 50MM OBJECTIVES WITH MULTI-COATED OPTICS: Large objective lenses gather more light while multiple layers of anti-reflective coatings boost light transmission. Views are bright and detailed with increased contrast and resolution.
- GREAT FOR DAY AND NIGHT USE: Not just for astronomy—these binoculars are also great for birdwatching, hiking, and scenic viewing with a close focus of 26.2 feet.
- TRIPOD-ADAPTABLE FOR STABLE VIEWING: Designed with a built-in tripod adapter socket so you can mount the binoculars on a standard tripod (adapter not included) for shake-free, extended viewing sessions.
Published rate estimates differ: Starwalk expects roughly five meteors per hour and no outburst, Farmers’ Almanac gives a usual rate of five to 10 per hour while noting rare outbursts into the hundreds, and High Point Scientific estimates 10 to 15 per hour. These are forecasts, not guaranteed counts; the number you see will depend on your sky and viewing conditions. The peak falls close to the new Moon on Oct. 10, so moonlight should barely interfere.
When is the best time to see the Orionids?
The Orionids reach their broad maximum on the night of Oct. 21 into Oct. 22. EarthSky predicts the peak at 18:00 UTC on Oct. 21, but the shower’s maximum stretches across several nights rather than offering a single, sharp hour. If clouds spoil the peak, try Oct. 20–21 or Oct. 22–23.

The Moon is the main obstacle in 2026. It will be a bright waxing gibbous during the evening and much of the night, washing out fainter meteors. NASA and timeanddate put moonset at around 3 a.m. local time on peak mornings; check your own location, since the exact time varies. After moonset, the sky darkens and the Orionid radiant is higher, making the hours before dawn the better window.

Starwalk gives an upper rate of about 20 Orionids per hour under ideal dark skies. NASA’s estimate for suburban viewers is about three to six per hour, with a few more possible under darker skies. Those figures describe different conditions, and moonlight is expected to reduce what viewers see in 2026.

Where should you look?
For the Draconids, the radiant is in Draco, but you do not need to fix your gaze on that constellation: meteors can streak across a wide area of sky. For Orionids, observers in the Northern Hemisphere can lie with their feet toward the southeast; those in the Southern Hemisphere can point their feet northeast. Look broadly upward rather than staring directly at Orion.
- Choose a place away from streetlights and other bright sources.
- Keep the Moon out of your direct view when possible; a building, tree or hill can block its glare without hiding most of the sky.
- Give your eyes 20 to 30 minutes to adapt to darkness. Bright phone screens can undo that adaptation; use a red or night-display mode if you need a stargazing app.
Do you need a telescope or binoculars?
No. Meteor showers are best watched with the unaided eye because you need a wide field of view to catch streaks appearing in different parts of the sky. Binoculars and telescopes narrow that view. Bring a reclining chair or blanket, dress for the temperature, and plan to stay outside for at least an hour; meteors do not arrive at even intervals.

Is this really one of the best meteor showers of the year?
That description needs qualification. The Draconids can be enjoyable because their peak is convenient and the Moon is nearly new, but forecasts put their ordinary rate in the single digits or low teens per hour, with large outbursts rare. The Orionids are the month’s main event and can produce more meteors under ideal skies, but bright moonlight will reduce the 2026 show until moonset. The available forecasts do not establish either shower as better than the Perseids or Geminids overall.
