It has expanded since its February 2025 launch, but access and available sources vary by plan, region, account, and workspace—so check the tools available in your own ChatGPT interface.
What Deep Research does
Deep Research is designed for multi-step investigations: ChatGPT gathers information, analyzes it across sources, and synthesizes findings into a report with citations or source links. OpenAI introduced it on February 2, 2025, describing an agent that could examine online material as well as text, images, and PDFs. OpenAI’s launch description said the tool could “find, analyze, and synthesize hundreds of online sources”; that was the company’s product description, not an independent assessment. OpenAI’s launch announcement also said the launch version was powered by a version of o3 optimized for browsing and data analysis. That is historical model information, not a statement of the current underlying model.

When to use Search instead
Use ChatGPT Search when you need a quick fact or recent update. Choose Deep Research when the question requires comparing information across sources, following multiple lines of inquiry, and documenting the result. OpenAI Academy describes Search as the faster option for quick facts and Deep Research as the more involved process for gathering, analyzing, and synthesizing evidence. OpenAI Academy’s guide to research with ChatGPT explains the distinction.
| Need | Better fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| A quick answer or recent fact | Search | Faster lookup suited to a focused question. |
| A complex question involving multiple sources | Deep Research | A multi-step investigation and synthesized, cited report; turnaround depends on the task. |
How to guide an investigation
- Describe the outcome. State the question you need answered and why. Add context, constraints, and what a useful report should cover.
- Set source boundaries where available. You may be able to specify or restrict sources, including eligible connected apps. Available choices depend on your product, account permissions, and workspace settings.
- Review the plan if ChatGPT offers one. In supported experiences, ChatGPT may propose a research plan that you can revise before it proceeds.
- Steer the task as it runs. OpenAI’s current guidance describes following progress and, where supported, interrupting the work to refine the scope or add sources.
- Check the report and its citations. Follow the source links for claims you plan to reuse, and assess whether each source actually supports the claim.
The interface and controls can differ across Chat, Work, and Codex. OpenAI’s Deep research in ChatGPT Help Center article describes the workflow and notes that sources depend on connected apps, permissions, and workspace settings.

What has expanded since launch
OpenAI’s dated product history shows Deep Research gaining capabilities and broader routes into the product. These announcements document rollout milestones; they do not establish that every feature is available to every account today.
- February 25, 2025: OpenAI announced access for all Plus users.
- April 24, 2025: OpenAI announced higher query allowances across plans and a lightweight version. Those were plan details at that time, not reliable current limits.
- July 17, 2025: OpenAI said Deep Research could use a visual browser as part of ChatGPT agent, while the original Deep Research option remained in the tools menu.
- February 10, 2026: OpenAI described connections to apps and MCP, trusted-site restrictions, real-time progress, the ability to interrupt and refine tasks, and revised progress and review displays.
OpenAI also documented connector rollouts in its ChatGPT Release Notes. A dated rollout announcement is not confirmation that a particular connector is currently enabled for your account.
Access, usage, and connected sources
Availability is not uniform. OpenAI says Deep Research does not work in every country or territory. In Chat, usage varies by plan; the product’s in-app usage counter is the place to check remaining work. Where a plan has a fixed allowance, the reset period is measured from first use. Work and Codex draw on their existing allowances or credits rather than the separate Chat allowance. Access in Work or Codex depends on account and workspace eligibility, while connected sources require the relevant permissions. Check your account and interface for current availability rather than relying on launch-era quotas. OpenAI’s Help Center guidance covers these distinctions.
Why cited reports still need checking
Citations make it possible to inspect where a report’s claims came from; they do not guarantee that the claims are correct. OpenAI has warned that Deep Research can hallucinate facts, draw incorrect inferences, mistake rumors for authoritative sources, or communicate uncertainty poorly. It also advises users to review citations before reusing or sharing a report. For decisions with significant consequences, verify key claims against the linked sources and consider whether those sources are authoritative and current. OpenAI’s launch announcement discusses these limitations.
Rank #3
OpenAI reported 26.6% accuracy on Humanity’s Last Exam for the model powering Deep Research at launch. That is a benchmark result reported by OpenAI in 2025—not a general accuracy rate for Deep Research reports or a current comparison with other tools.
