OpenAI announced a visual ad format for ChatGPT on October 5, 2026, alongside expanded conversion-data integrations and new measurement work. The format is intended to use images to show product inspiration, product use, or experiences a product or service enables. For advertisers, the announcement’s practical significance is the pairing of visual creative with ways to track conversions, assess incremental impact, and evaluate brand suitability—not a general performance guarantee.
What OpenAI announced
In “Building advertising for the way people use AI”, OpenAI described visual ads as part of ChatGPT Ads. The imagery is meant to help people discover brands and understand an offering by showing inspiration, how a product is used, or what a service makes possible. The announcement does not provide a complete specification of the format’s availability or rollout timing, so advertisers should not assume it is accessible to every account or market.

OpenAI also said ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people each week. That is the company’s stated audience figure; the announcement does not provide a methodology alongside it.

What early measurement results show—and what they do not
OpenAI cited findings from individual advertisers and measurement partners. They use different methods and describe different outcomes, so they are not directly comparable or reliable forecasts for a new campaign.
#1 Best Overall
| Finding | Scope and attribution |
|---|---|
| 15.3% lower attributed cost per acquisition than WeightWatchers’ blended paid-search benchmark | DV Rockerbox’s 2026 comparison for WeightWatchers, as reported by OpenAI; an attributed CPA comparison, not a universal benchmark. |
| 67% of incremental purchases came from net-new customers | WorkMagic’s 2026 finding for wellness brand Dose; concerns incremental purchases. |
| 93% of visitors from ChatGPT Ads were new | Triple Whale’s 2026 figure for Portland Leather; describes visitors, not incremental purchases. |
| 52.7% of eligible one-day view-through conversions occurred within an hour of the matched ad impression | OpenAI’s 2026 early analysis of global campaigns optimized for deeper-funnel outcomes. |
| 2.3 times more incremental orders for Dose than last-click attribution captured | WorkMagic’s estimate from a geo-lift study, reported by OpenAI; it compares an incrementality estimate with last-click attribution. |
The distinction matters: an attributed CPA comparison, a count of new visitors, and a geo-lift estimate answer different questions. None alone establishes the likely result for another advertiser, product, or campaign.
How advertisers can measure ChatGPT ad conversions
OpenAI’s Conversion Measurement documentation describes a setup using a data source in Ads Manager and conversion events sent through the OpenAI Pixel, the Conversions API (CAPI), or both. A conversion appears in reporting only when the relevant event is configured, received from a connected source, falls within the applicable attribution window, and can be matched to an eligible ad click using available signals.

Set up event matching carefully
- Preserve the click reference called
opprefthrough redirects so the click can be matched where possible. - If the same conversion is sent through both Pixel and CAPI, use the same event ID so the system can deduplicate it.
- Confirm that the event being sent matches the conversion configured for the campaign and that it falls within the applicable attribution window.
These requirements mean a tracking integration by itself does not guarantee that every sale or action will be attributed to an ad. Missing or altered matching signals, event configuration, or timing can affect reported conversions.

Expect different totals across reporting systems
Ads Manager, an advertiser’s analytics provider, and other ad platforms can report different conversion totals. OpenAI identifies possible reasons including different attribution methods and windows, timestamp boundaries, consent and storage conditions, deduplication, and campaign configuration. Compare the same event definitions and attribution windows before treating a discrepancy as a tracking failure.

Buying and reporting options
OpenAI’s “New ways to buy ChatGPT ads” describes Ads Manager as a beta self-serve platform being gradually opened to more businesses. OpenAI materials describe CPM and CPC buying and campaign management in Ads Manager. The Ads in ChatGPT: The Basics help page describes billing based on impressions and valid clicks, optimization objectives, and campaign reporting. These details and access can change during rollout; check current Ads Manager eligibility and options before planning a campaign.
The help page lists impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate (CTR), average cost per click (CPC), average cost per thousand impressions (CPM), and conversions as reporting metrics. It says impression, click, and CTR reporting refresh approximately every 15 minutes, while spend insights may be delayed by 7–8 hours. Static UTM parameters can be added to landing-page URLs for use in existing analytics tools. Treat these as help-page details that may change, rather than fixed service guarantees.

Incrementality and brand-resonance work is at an early stage
Attribution records conversions that a system associates with ads; incrementality research asks whether advertising caused outcomes that would not otherwise have happened. OpenAI says it is exploring geo-based incrementality experiments with Haus, Measured, and WorkMagic. It also says it is in early-stage testing with Kantar and Cint to measure brand-resonance metrics as it experiments with new placements. These efforts broaden the kinds of questions advertisers may be able to assess, but the announcement describes ongoing work, not a complete measurement offering.
For campaign evaluation, keep click-attributed conversions, view-through conversions, and causal incrementality estimates separate. Compare each against the method, event, attribution window, and campaign objective it actually measures.

Brand suitability, privacy, and user control
OpenAI says its placement safeguards assess whether a conversation is appropriate for advertising and aim to avoid emotionally vulnerable, sensitive, or otherwise unsuitable contexts. The company describes automated review, human oversight, and ongoing monitoring, and says qualifying advertisers can use Negative Phrases to narrow placement requirements. These are OpenAI’s descriptions of its safeguards, not a published independent audit result.
OpenAI says DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science are conducting brand-suitability evaluation pilots in controlled testing environments without access to private user conversations. The pilots are intended to give advertisers more insight into how suitability standards are applied; they are not evidence of completed independent certification. In the announcement, Integral Ad Science CEO Lidiane Jones said its evaluation would assess how OpenAI’s safeguards perform across evolving scenarios while preserving the privacy of real user conversations. DoubleVerify CEO Mark Zagorski described the goal as independent measurement suited to a conversational advertising environment while respecting user privacy.
The Ads in ChatGPT Help Center page says ads are separate from ChatGPT answers and advertisers receive aggregated performance reporting rather than users’ chats. It also says availability and controls vary by region and over time. These are OpenAI’s stated policies; they do not mean third-party campaign measurement systems receive no campaign data.

Before comparing ChatGPT Ads with another channel—or comparing measurement reports—align the campaign goal and the measure being used. The most useful checks are:
- Buying basis: whether the campaign is purchased or optimized around impressions, clicks, or a supported conversion objective.
- Outcome definition: which event counts as a conversion and which attribution window applies.
- Signal quality: whether Pixel or CAPI events are configured correctly and click references survive redirects.
- Measurement type: whether a result is click-attributed, view-through, or based on an incrementality design.
- Suitability needs: whether OpenAI’s stated placement controls and any available Negative Phrases address the advertiser’s requirements.
- Reporting cadence: whether reporting delays or differences between systems affect when results can be evaluated.
Because the visual format’s rollout details, eligible markets, and current campaign options are not fully specified in the announcement, verify them in Ads Manager and current Help Center materials before committing budget.
