A Bitcoin Magazine interview page published October 5, 2026, features Shan Aggarwal, identified as Coinbase’s first chief business officer, discussing institutional Bitcoin infrastructure and a proposed SEC custody framework. The page’s headline says big banks are increasing Bitcoin exposure, but its synopsis supplies no bank-level figures or other evidence to verify that claim. Read the interview page.
What the interview says—and what it does not establish
The October 5, 2026 Bitcoin Magazine page presents a conversation with Aggarwal about Bitcoin custody, financial advisers, institutional adoption and related payment technologies. Its synopsis says he discusses Coinbase’s role as custodian for most Bitcoin ETFs and its support for the advisor community. The page does not quantify that custody role, provide a transcript, or reproduce a direct quote from Aggarwal. Its description should therefore be treated as a summary of the interview’s themes, not a complete record of his statements. Bitcoin Magazine’s interview page.

The headline’s claim that big banks are increasing BTC exposure is not substantiated on the page with named bank holdings, percentages, a time series or dates. A chapter titled “What BlackRock and JPMorgan Want From Bitcoin Infrastructure” establishes that the interview addresses those firms’ infrastructure needs; it does not demonstrate that either firm has increased direct Bitcoin holdings. The available page supports reporting that Aggarwal’s interview is framed around institutional interest, not presenting a measured increase in bank exposure as fact.
What changed in the SEC custody proposal
The SEC action referenced in the interview’s framing was issued on October 1, 2026, as a proposed rule, not a final rule. It covers custody of crypto assets by registered investment advisers and regulated funds, along with related reporting and recordkeeping requirements. SEC proposed-rule page.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
The SEC’s announcement says the proposal would allow certain advisers or funds to self-custody crypto assets, or use state trust companies as custodians, subject to conditions. This is not a blanket permission for every adviser to hold every client’s Bitcoin directly, and the proposal does not itself establish that the options are available under a finalized rule. The comment period is 60 days after publication in the Federal Register. SEC press release.
SEC Chairman Paul S. Atkins characterized the market in an October 1 statement as having grown “from a niche curiosity into a multi-trillion-dollar asset class to which investors actively seek exposure.” That is Atkins’s description of the market’s growth, not a precise market-size figure supplied with a measurement method. ETF exposure and direct custody are different routes
The interview links two parts of institutional access: investment products such as Bitcoin ETFs and the infrastructure used to hold crypto assets. An investor who buys an ETF holds shares in a fund; the fund’s custody arrangements are not the same as the investor personally holding Bitcoin in a wallet. The interview synopsis attributes discussion of Coinbase’s ETF custody and adviser support to Aggarwal, but provides no custody data with which to assess the scale or safeguards of that role. 1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor advisers and funds, the proposed SEC framework concerns how covered entities may custody crypto assets and meet associated requirements. It does not decide which route is preferable for a particular investor or institution. Relevant considerations include who controls the assets, the custodian’s regulatory status, operational safeguards, reporting obligations and whether the applicable rules are final. The proposal’s pending status matters: readers should not treat its potential options as settled requirements or current blanket permissions. SEC proposed-rule page.

Other subjects in the interview
The page’s chapter headings indicate that the conversation also touches on the Coinbase One Card, stablecoins and merchant payments involving Coinbase and Citi, Bitcoin Lightning, AI-agent payments, collectibles, and Bitcoin rewards. These headings show the breadth of the discussion, but they do not establish product availability, terms, adoption levels or performance. The phrase “trillion-dollar stablecoin opportunity” appears as a chapter description; the page does not provide a source, methodology or year that would support treating it as a measured market statistic.
