OpenAI announced textGrain on October 5, 2026, beginning a phased rollout of statistical watermarks for some AI-generated text. API customers worldwide can opt in for select models; eligible ChatGPT and Codex text in the European Union is expected to receive watermarks over the weeks after the announcement. This is not a global default for ChatGPT or Codex, and the detector is initially available only to approved researchers and expert organizations.

How OpenAI’s text watermark works

OpenAI says textGrain subtly shifts how a model selects among possible words or word pieces. Across a passage, those choices create a statistical pattern that a detector can test. The watermark is part of the text’s word-choice pattern: it does not add visible marks, hidden characters, invisible spaces, unusual punctuation, or special watermark-only tokens. OpenAI’s explanation of text watermarking describes the approach.

OpenAI’s technical report describes generation coupled to pseudorandom values derived from a secret key and preceding context. It uses optimal transport over vocabulary blocks and KL regularization to set an entropy-loss budget—the trade-off between retaining sampling randomness and making the statistical signal detectable. The detector reconstructs scores from the text and key; according to the report, it does not need the original generating model or entropy budget. These are details of the reported method, not a public specification of every deployed configuration.

What OpenAI’s detection results show—and what they do not

OpenAI reports that, at a target 1% false-positive rate, its detector identified watermarks in about 80% of 200-token passages and about 95% of 400-token passages in content such as psychology. The company says results were substantially lower for mathematics, where word choice is more constrained. These are OpenAI’s evaluations, not independently replicated rates or guarantees for arbitrary passages.

Editing can weaken the signal. In OpenAI’s evaluation of 400-token passages, replacing 10% of words with synonyms reduced detection from about 92% to 66%; replacing 25% reduced it to 17%. OpenAI also reports an evaluation across all 24 official EU languages: at a 1% false-positive rate, detection ranged from 69.0% for Spanish to 42.2% for Romanian. Those figures describe the company’s evaluation, not every subject, text length, or editing workflow. The Help Center article gives its language-evaluation figures.

OpenAI says textGrain matched or exceeded approaches it tested, including SynthID for text, and reports no meaningful performance differences with and without watermarking across listed benchmarks for its Astra model. These comparisons and benchmark results are company-reported. OpenAI cautions that ideal-condition performance does not guarantee reliable results in everyday use.

MySpool WiFi Water Leak Detector for Home with Text & Email Notifications
  • INSTANT TEXT AND EMAIL ALERTS, NO MONTHLY FEE - The moment the pad gets wet, this wifi water sensor sends a text message and an email. One phone number and up to five email addresses per device, and the alert repeats every few minutes until the sensor is dry.
  • NO APP TO INSTALL, NO HUB TO BUY - Most water leak sensors for home need a proprietary bridge sitting on your router. This one joins the WiFi you already have in a few minutes from a phone or laptop, and has been tested past 400 feet from the router and through walls.
  • PLUGS IN, SO THE BATTERY NEVER DIES - A 6 ft power cord and a 5 ft sensor lead reach from the outlet down to the floor, which makes it a practical water heater leak detector, under sink alarm, or washer and sump backup with nothing to replace once a year.
  • HARDENED NICKEL PLATED PAD, USE IT AGAIN - Plenty of water sensors for leak detection corrode after a single flood. The pad on this one is nickel plated for corrosion resistance, so you wipe it dry, set it back down, and it is ready for the next leak.
  • FREE CENTRAL MONITORING TELLS YOU IT IS ALIVE - Your water detector checks in with our cloud servers every day. Miss a check-in and you get an email that it is offline, plus another when it returns. Device status and recent alerts live on a secure web page.

What a positive or negative result means

A detected watermark is a limited provenance signal. OpenAI says it may indicate that an OpenAI system generated or processed part of a passage. It does not measure how much a person contributed, identify a person or account, establish ownership or responsibility, or verify whether the content is accurate, misleading, harmful, or properly contextualized. As OpenAI puts it in its October 5, 2026 announcement, “A watermark does not verify accuracy.” Read the announcement.

A detector that finds no watermark cannot establish that a person wrote the text. The passage may be too short, edited, translated, generated by an unsupported or legacy model, created before watermarking was available, or produced by another provider. OpenAI’s developer guidance says its provenance checker is not a general-purpose AI detector and cannot detect every provider’s output. OpenAI developer guidance.

That distinction matters: textGrain embeds a signal during generation, while a general AI-text classifier analyzes text after generation for patterns. A detector that does not find OpenAI’s signal cannot rule out AI involvement more broadly.

MySpool Internet WiFi Outage Detector with Text Message and Email Alerts
  • INTERNET OFF AND ON ALERTS IN MINUTES: This Wifi internet outage detector reports to the MySpool cloud several times every minute. Two missed check-ins send an Internet OFF alert, usually delivered within 1 to 3 minutes, and an Internet ON alert follows the moment service returns.
  • RECIPIENTS AND TIMING YOU CONTROL: Send alerts to up to 5 email addresses plus one SMS number. Internet ON and Internet OFF notifications can be configured separately, so you can enable both or only the alerts you need. Set active hours to help avoid unwanted notifications during the night.
  • NO APP, NO HUB, NO SOFTWARE: This wireless internet monitor plugs into any open LAN port on your router or switch and runs on its own. Nothing to install on a phone or PC, no gateway or bridge to buy, and no smart home ecosystem to join. A/C power cable with adapter is included.
  • SET YOUR OUTAGE THRESHOLD: A dashboard slider sets the outage interval anywhere from 2 to 30 minutes, so a brief dropout never fires an internet down alert. Every event is logged with a timestamp on a secure web page you can show your provider.
  • RELIABLE REMOTE INTERNET MONITORING: Runs continuously with no manual input, making it practical for vacation homes, rental properties, branch offices, server closets, and camera or NVR cabinets. Designed by Bell Labs engineers, this device monitors your internet connection around the clock for outages.

Why OpenAI says it is introducing text watermarking

OpenAI frames the rollout as a response to the EU AI Act’s machine-readable identifiability requirement for generative AI providers and its commitments under the EU Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content. That is OpenAI’s explanation of the regulatory rationale, not an independent legal analysis. OpenAI’s announcement and its EU AI Act customer guidance describe that framing.

Text watermarking sits alongside other provenance measures, rather than replacing them. OpenAI’s provenance overview discusses C2PA Content Credentials, SynthID watermarking for supported images, and verification tools. Signals may be removed or fail to survive editing or platform changes. Those image and audio tools should not be confused with textGrain’s separate rollout and restricted text-detector access.

How to assess a text-watermark claim

When someone presents a detector result as proof, check the scope of the signal rather than treating it as a universal AI verdict:

  • Provider and model: Does the detector support the system and model that may have produced the passage?
  • Product and region: Was watermarking enabled for that API project, or was the text eligible for the regional ChatGPT or Codex rollout?
  • Length and subject: Was there enough text, and does the subject allow the model meaningful word-choice variation?
  • Changes since generation: Has the text been edited, translated, reformatted, or passed through a platform that might alter it?
  • Detector access and error rates: Is the result from an authorized provenance detector, and what false-positive and false-negative conditions apply?
  • What the result establishes: A signal can support a limited provenance claim; it cannot settle authorship, contribution, truth, or responsibility.

OpenAI’s own materials emphasize that no single signal or detection approach is foolproof. A text watermark is one clue about provenance, not a substitute for evaluating the content or its context.
