Reflection AI is the new challenger behind the headline. Its first model, Beam, is an open-weight system aimed at coding, reasoning, and agentic work. The launch gives enterprises another potential option alongside closed services such as OpenAI’s and Anthropic’s—but it does not yet show that Beam matches them, costs less in practice, or is ready for broad deployment.
What is Reflection AI?
Reflection AI is a U.S. startup building open-weight models and an enterprise AI stack. CEO and cofounder Misha Laskin has framed the company as a response to the prominence of Chinese open models, saying in a July 2026 interview with CNBC, as quoted by Gizmodo: “Today the best open models are coming out of China.” That is the company’s competitive rationale, not evidence that a model’s country of origin makes it safe or unsafe.

Reflection’s stated aim is to build an American alternative in a market where open-weight models can offer developers more control over customization and deployment. Whether Beam becomes a consequential competitor depends on practical performance, cost, operational effort, and enterprise adoption—not its origin alone.

Beam is Reflection’s first open-weight model. In its October 5, 2026 announcement, the company described it as a sparse mixture-of-experts model with 501 billion total parameters and 23 billion active parameters. Reflection says it is intended for coding, reasoning, and agentic workloads. Those specifications and capability descriptions are company claims, not independent benchmark findings.
#1 Best Overall
- High-Performance AI Processor:The MS-02 Ultra features an Intel Core Ultra 9 285HX (24C/24T, up to 5.5 GHz, 13 TOPS NPU), delivering fast and efficient performance for AI inference, algorithm development, and media workloads. A PCIe x16 expansion slot supports desktop-class GPU upgrades for advanced model training and accelerated computing tasks. It's ideal for creators, engineers, and teams handling intensive parallel workloads.
- 4 × M.2 PCIe 4.0 + 4 × DDR5 SODIMM slots:Four DDR5 SODIMM slots support up to 256 GB of memory, while ECC helps maintain data integrity in mission-critical environments. Four PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots support up to 24 TB of storage, supporting RAID 0/1/5/10, combining high-speed performance with data protection. It allows for the creation of independent scratch disks, media libraries, and project drives, providing high-throughput for production workflows.
- PCIe & USB 4.0 v2: Up to three PCIe slots can be equipped, including a dual-slot x16 GPU. The main slot supports PCIe 5.0, meeting the needs of high-bandwidth creative and computing workloads. USB 4.0 v2 (80Gbps) supports high-bandwidth external storage and displays.
- Ultra-fast Networking: Wi-Fi 7 further enhances wireless performance with next-generation speeds and low-latency stability. Intelligent bandwidth switching optimizes throughput in different network environments, ensuring optimal performance for enterprise or local networks. Dual 25GbE ports (providing up to approximately 3.125 GB/s bandwidth, about 25 times faster than traditional 1GbE), enabling seamless large-scale file transfers and parallel computing. 10GbE and 2.5GbE ports, with support for Intel vPro technology, ensure enterprise-grade remote management and deployment flexibility.
- Server-grade thermal architecture: Utilizing a dedicated CPU/GPU airflow design, equipped with a 6-pipe dual-fan cooler, it maintains stable performance even under sustained loads, delivering up to 140W Turbo power while maintaining a 100W TDP, and operating with noise levels as low as 36 dB. An integrated 350W power supply ensures stable and reliable output for demanding computing tasks and fully loaded extended configurations.
Reflection also reported training the model on 23.8 trillion tokens and using more than 100 million reinforcement-learning rollouts. Those company-reported training figures do not establish model quality.
At announcement, Reflection said Beam was undergoing final red-teaming and evaluations, with an early preview limited to a select group. The company said it planned to release weights under Apache 2.0, along with documentation and a full stack for running, evaluating, and fine-tuning, later in October 2026. That was a stated plan, not confirmation of a completed public release. Check Reflection’s announcement for current availability.
Why might Beam matter to OpenAI and Anthropic?
Beam’s potential business challenge is not that it has already displaced a closed model. It is that an open-weight option could appeal to organizations that want to customize a model, choose where it runs, or manage inference costs themselves rather than rely entirely on a hosted subscription or API.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe enterprise stakes are significant. Gizmodo reported that OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar told investors in August 2026 that most of OpenAI’s revenue came from enterprise customers. The same article said Anthropic reported in February 2026 that more than 500 business customers each spent over $1 million annually on API usage or Claude subscriptions. These are reported company statements, not audited financial disclosures in the cited reporting.
Reflection’s product page describes a stack that includes open-weight models, software, API access, and deployment options for private cloud, on-premises, air-gapped, and edge environments. These are vendor-described options; they do not establish that every configuration is generally available, suitable for every organization, or more secure than alternatives.
Can a company use Beam instead of ChatGPT or Claude?
Potentially, once the model and required tools are publicly available and an organization has validated them for its own work. But “instead of” is not a simple model-to-model swap: a self-hosted or customized model brings infrastructure, integration, monitoring, security, and maintenance responsibilities that a hosted service may handle differently.

There is no independent apples-to-apples comparison in the cited sources showing Beam outperforming OpenAI or Anthropic models. The launch establishes a new option, not a reason to switch at scale. A useful evaluation should test the organization’s actual tasks and account for the full operating model.
| Evaluation question | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Task performance | How Beam performs on representative coding, reasoning, or agent workflows, compared with the organization’s current model. |
| Total cost | Inference and hosting costs plus the engineering and operational effort required to run, update, and secure the system. |
| Customization | Whether access to weights and fine-tuning tools supports the changes the organization needs. |
| Data and deployment control | Where prompts, outputs, and other data are processed and stored under the chosen deployment configuration. |
| Governance and safety | What evaluations, safeguards, access controls, and incident processes are needed for the intended use. |
Are open-weight models safer for company data?
Not automatically. Open weights can give an organization more control over where a model runs and how it is adapted, but those choices do not by themselves guarantee privacy, security, or safe behavior. A private or on-premises deployment still depends on how it is configured, governed, and maintained.
Likewise, U.S. development or local hosting should not be treated as a safety certification. Organizations should assess the specific deployment, data flows, access controls, model behavior, and vendor commitments before using sensitive information.
How could open models affect AI costs?
Open weights may let some organizations choose their own hosting and tune a model for particular workloads. That flexibility can make cost management possible, but it does not prove that the total cost will be lower. Infrastructure, inference efficiency, staffing, evaluation, and ongoing maintenance all matter; the cited sources provide no independent cost comparison for Beam.
Reflection’s claim that Beam has 23 billion active parameters in a 501-billion-parameter model describes its reported architecture. It is not, by itself, a measure of the cost or speed an organization will experience in production.
What remains unknown about Beam?
- Independent benchmark results sufficient to establish how Beam compares with leading closed or open models.
- Whether the planned public release of weights and accompanying tools occurred as stated.
- Real-world inference costs and operational requirements across different deployments.
- Whether enterprises adopt Beam in meaningful numbers or switch from existing services.
Reflection’s announcement and product descriptions establish the company’s plans and positioning. Axios’s October 6, 2026 follow-up places Beam in the broader contest over Western open-weight models. Neither source establishes that the launch will cause widespread customer migration.
