WeLion’s semi-solid-state batteries are hybrid lithium-ion cells: solid electrolyte components coexist with liquid electrolyte, so they sit between conventional liquid-electrolyte batteries and fully solid-state designs. WeLion says its 360 Wh/kg, 111 Ah cell entered a NIO series-production vehicle in 2023; NIO lists a 150 kWh battery pack using cells with 360 Wh/kg energy density. Those figures describe different things: cell energy density is not pack weight or a guaranteed driving range.
What does “semi-solid-state” mean?
WeLion describes its semi-solid-state cells as an intermediate architecture, not a fully solid-state battery. In its comparison, conventional lithium-ion cells use liquid electrolyte; its semi-solid design combines solid electrolyte components with liquid electrolyte; and an all-solid-state design has no liquid electrolyte shown.

That distinction matters: the NIO battery associated with WeLion should not be called all-solid-state. “Semi-solid-state” is a broad category, and electrolyte composition can differ by design. An independent technical review describes semi-solid batteries as retaining a gel or liquid component at the electrolyte/electrode interface and notes that some designs can use manufacturing processes associated with conventional lithium-ion cells. It characterizes NIO’s WeLion-produced battery as oxide-based, but that does not establish that every WeLion product uses identical chemistry. | Cathode-material collaboration | BASF said in August 2025 that BASF Shanshan had delivered the first mass-produced batches of cathode active material for semi-solid-state batteries in collaboration with WeLion. The project began in August 2024. BASF release |
The BASF announcement is evidence of an industrial materials collaboration, not a measurement of a particular vehicle’s range, safety or performance. BASF said its high-nickel NCM cathode material uses a composite coating intended to address issues at the cathode/solid-electrolyte interface, and that WeLion plans to use the material in a new generation of semi-solid-state batteries. It does not by itself establish the delivery status or specifications of a particular vehicle battery.
How much range does NIO’s 150 kWh battery provide?
A 150 kWh pack is a measure of stored energy, while 360 Wh/kg is a cell-level energy-density figure. Neither number alone determines a vehicle’s range. NIO’s page pairs its pack specification with vehicle-specific range illustrations, and WeLion’s profile uses the phrase “over 1000 km” for its high-energy-density power battery. That figure is a company claim, not an independently validated range result with a stated comparable test protocol. Range depends on the vehicle, test cycle and operating conditions; the cited pages do not establish one universal real-world distance for every NIO vehicle using the pack. - SEMI-SOLID-STATE SAFETY, BUILT FOR TRAVEL: Semi-solid-state cells hold a fraction of the flammable liquid in ordinary lithium-ion and resist thermal failure. In internal testing, the cells were puncture, cut and drill tested with no fire. The aluminum housing is highly thermally conductive, helping draw heat away from the cells and dissipate it during charging. Under 100Wh, it's airline carry-on ready.
- ALL-DAY POWER, STILL POCKETABLE: A full 10,000mAh gives a typical iPhone roughly 1.5 to 2 charges - plenty for long travel days, events and back-to-back workdays without chasing an outlet. The dense semi-solid state design (a paired 5,000mAh + 5,000mAh layout) keeps the pack slim enough to slip into a jacket pocket or bag. The built-in lanyard doubles as a USB-C cable, so a charging cord is always attached - nothing extra to pack or lose.
- QI2-CERTIFIED 15W MAGNETIC CHARGING: A strong, precisely aligned magnet snaps onto iPhone 17, 16, 15, 14, 13 and 12 with precise alignment and a strong hold, so you can keep using your phone while it charges. As a Qi2-certified, MagSafe-compatible charger, the magnetic connection keeps the charger aligned while you scroll, text, or move.
- DUAL USB-C, UP TO 30W OUTPUT: Two USB-C ports let you charge several devices at once and deliver up to 30W of fast wired power for phones, earbuds and tablets. The same port also refills the 10K itself quickly, so it's ready for the next day. (Large tablets and laptops draw more and may only charge partially.)
- FULL-COLOR LCD DISPLAY: A crisp color screen shows exact battery percentage plus live input and output wattage, so you always know how much power is left and how fast each device is charging - no blinking LEDs to decode. It stays easy to read at a glance, whether you're commuting, at an event, on a shoot or working late.
How does WeLion say the cells work?
WeLion’s technical account focuses on the electrolyte and the interfaces between cell materials. The company describes in-situ curing to bond solid-electrolyte and electrode particles, with the aim of reducing interface resistance. It also describes mixing solid electrolyte into electrodes, coating positive electrodes and separators with ion conductors, using thin lithium-metal foil, and pre-lithiation. WeLion presents these measures as approaches to ion transport, interface management, energy density, cycle stability and limiting dendrite growth. These are the company’s stated design objectives, not independently demonstrated comparative results in the cited material. WeLion research page
Is WeLion’s battery safer than a regular lithium-ion battery?
WeLion says its hybrid formulation contains less flammable liquid than a fully liquid-electrolyte cell and claims lower risks of leakage, fire, explosion and thermal runaway. That is the company’s safety rationale, not a guarantee that the cell is nonflammable or risk-free. The reviewed pages do not provide a controlled independent head-to-head safety test against competing batteries, or pack-level safety certification details. A meaningful comparison would need to specify the test standard, failure trigger, temperature, fire propagation behavior and pack-level containment—not just the electrolyte label. - WORLD'S THINNEST SEMI-SOLID-STATE 5,000MAH: At just 6.8mm at its thinnest point, the Air is the slimmest semi-solid-state Qi2 power bank you can buy — the semi-solid-state design supports this slim form factor while helping the cells stay stable and reducing fire risk. It sits flush against your iPhone and slips into a pocket, slim bag or clutch. TechRadar Pro CES 2026 Picks Award Winner.
- SEMI-SOLID-STATE SAFETY, BUILT FOR TRAVEL: Unlike conventional lithium-ion banks with a flammable liquid electrolyte, SolidSafe Air's semi-solid-state cells sharply cut the liquid component — lowering risk at the cell level and staying stable under heat, stress and impact. It's not a circuit-only fix but a fundamental change in chemistry. At 18.5Wh, it's airline carry-on ready.
- 15W QI2 MAGNETIC + 20W USB-C: Qi2-certified, MagSafe-compatible magnetic charging snaps onto iPhone 17, 16, 15, 14, 13 and 12 with precise, secure alignment, while the USB-C port delivers up to 20W when you're in a hurry. The 5,000mAh cell gives a modern iPhone roughly one full top-up, and you can charge wired and wireless at the same time.
- TITANIUM SHELL, BUILT TO LAST: A titanium-reinforced shell resists dents and drops, and titanium's high thermal conductivity helps draw heat away from the cells and dissipate it at the surface during charging. It's premium protection that keeps the Air tough and travel-ready in a remarkably slim form.
- CCC CERTIFIED FOR TRAVEL: CCC certified for battery compliance and travel in China, with FCC, CE and UKCA listings for other regions. Built-in circuit safeguards cover overcharge, over-discharge, overcurrent and short circuits. Magnetic charging suits MagSafe iPhones or a thin compatible case; for Pixel and other Android phones, use a magnetic case or the 20W USB-C port.
What is established—and what remains unknown?
- Reported industrial deployment: WeLion and NIO describe a semi-solid-state battery associated with a NIO series-production vehicle in 2023; WeLion also reports deliveries in energy storage and other applications.
- Not established by these sources: the WeLion NIO cell’s cost, independently measured real-world range, verified cycle life, pack-level safety certification details, or universal compatibility with specific vehicles and storage systems.
- Keep milestones distinct: a roadmap, customer qualification, mass production and delivery are not interchangeable. For example, BASF’s 2025 announcement concerns mass-produced cathode-material batches for a collaboration, not independent validation of a finished battery pack.
For comparisons with other battery designs, look for like-for-like data on electrolyte architecture, cell versus pack energy density, charging limits, cycle and calendar life under stated conditions, safety tests, cost and production status. Application also matters: EV range and weight, grid-storage duration, and the power needs of drones or portable equipment are different requirements.
