A game-changing exploration tool does more than make travel faster: it opens routes, reaches terrain that was previously out of bounds, or gives players a reason to revisit familiar places. In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the paraglider reshapes how Link moves through Hyrule. In Metroid Dread, newly acquired abilities can reveal alternate routes through areas already visited. These examples show two distinct ways one item or ability can change exploration.
What makes an item change exploration?
The clearest test is whether a new tool changes the places a player can reach or the routes available to get there. A stronger weapon may help in combat without changing exploration; a glider, obstacle-breaking ability, or way through overhead terrain can alter the map’s practical boundaries.

- Route access: Does it open a door, clear an obstacle, or create a route through an earlier area?
- New traversal: Does it let the player travel in a way the landscape previously prevented?
- Vertical access: Does it reach spaces above or beyond the visible path?
- Discovery: Does gaining it prompt players to reconsider places they have already explored?
These are different effects, not one universal design formula. The examples below show how a single tool or ability can make exploration feel newly possible in distinct ways.

Nintendo describes the paraglider as a way for Link to travel through Hyrule. Its exploration effect is especially clear when high ground becomes a launch point: instead of descending along a winding path, Link can glide outward and choose where to land. Nintendo’s Explorer’s Guide also describes using a mountaintop to glide toward a horse.

The paraglider is powerful, but it is not the game’s only means of getting around. Nintendo also lists horseback travel, rafts, and shield surfing among the ways to move through the world. That range matters: the glider changes how players use height and distance within a broader set of travel options, rather than serving as the sole key to exploration. Nintendo’s game page identifies the title for Nintendo Switch and describes these travel options.
The game’s scale also offers places to apply those choices. Nintendo’s feature page says Hyrule contains more than 100 Shrines of Trials and over 180 weapons. Those figures describe content listed by Nintendo; they are not measures of exploration or player behavior.

Metroid Dread: new abilities make old areas worth revisiting
Metroid Dread presents a different kind of exploration shift. Rather than adding an open-world travel mode, new abilities can let Samus pass through doors or destroy obstacles, changing which paths are available across a connected map.
Nintendo’s development team explains the design in Metroid Dread Report Vol. 3: “Picking up new items and weapons along the way lets you expand the areas you can visit, allowing you to explore new destinations and discover alternate routes.” An ability gained later can therefore make a familiar corridor or blocked passage newly useful.

Nintendo’s Metroid Dread tips recommend checking the map for obstacles that a newly acquired ability can pass, including ones outside the current area. A practical question to ask after gaining an ability is the one Nintendo uses on its official game page: “What new locations can you now explore with the ability you just acquired?”
Tears of the Kingdom: Ascend changes what counts as a path
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom adds a vertical-access example. Nintendo describes Ascend as an ability that lets Link pass through solid objects above him, adding a new dimension to exploration. Instead of treating an overhead surface only as a barrier, the player can look for a place where the ability makes it a route upward.

Ascend is an ability rather than a conventional item, but it fits the same exploration test: it changes which spaces can be reached and how the player thinks about terrain. Nintendo’s official release announcement describes the ability.

The useful distinction is not simply “open world” versus “not open world.” A tool can change exploration by altering travel across a broad landscape, by unlocking branches in a connected map, or by making the space above the player part of the route network.
