The ’90s iMac Hockey-Puck Mouse Inspired a Niche of Quick-Fix Accessories

Apple’s round USB Mouse, model M4848, arrived with the original iMac in 1998. Its shape drew criticism from users who found it hard to orient by touch or awkward to hold, and accessory makers responded with shells that reshaped the bundled mouse. Contemporary coverage documents a small market for those fixes—not a measured “mini-economy,” but a memorable example of people trying to improve a product they already owned.

Why did people criticize the round iMac mouse?

The mouse’s circular body gave users few tactile clues about which way it was pointing. That made it easier to move the cursor at an unintended angle. Contemporary accounts also describe disagreement over how to hold it: some users preferred a finger grip, while others found the shape unnatural in the palm. Small size and orientation were recurring complaints.

That backlash was real, but “people hated it” is shorthand, not a claim that every owner disliked the mouse. A 1999 Low End Mac article pushed back against the criticism, arguing that a particular grip could work for some users while acknowledging it would not suit everyone. Comfort is personal; these accounts do not establish that the mouse caused injury or that one grip was best for all.

What accessories tried to fix it?

iCatch: a simpler shell

The Macsense iCatch fitted around the round mouse to give it a more familiar, elongated shape. A December 1999 Low End Mac article described it as simpler and cheaper than the UniTrap, reported a period price of about US$10, and said it had recently been discontinued. That price and availability refer to the period—not today.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

UniTrap: a more enclosing conversion

Contour Design’s UniTrap used a three-piece casing to enclose the Apple mouse and add a larger button. Its buttons could be swapped for different colors. In his 1999 review, Dan Knight said installation took a few minutes and described the result favorably: “With $15 and a few minutes, you’ve converted one of the world’s least ergonomic mice into something much, much nicer.” That was one reviewer’s hands-on opinion, not a controlled comparison or a promise that the shell would suit every user.

How did the fixes compare with replacing the mouse?

At the time, a buyer could spend less to modify the bundled puck, replace it with a conventional mouse, or choose a trackball that stays in place while the user moves its ball to control the cursor. The prices below are historical figures reported in 1999 coverage; they are not current values.

Option What it changed Reported period price
Macsense iCatch Added an elongated shell while reusing the Apple USB Mouse About US$10, as reported by Low End Mac in 1999
Contour Design UniTrap Enclosed the Apple mouse in a three-piece shell with a larger, interchangeable button About US$15, as reported by Low End Mac in 1999
Contour UniMouse Replaced the puck with a conventional three-button mouse About US$40, as reported by Low End Mac in 1999
Trackball Kept the pointing device stationary; cursor control came from moving its ball Not stated in the cited Washington Post article

The UniMouse price and comparison come from Knight’s UniTrap review. The Washington Post’s 1990 explanation of trackballs predates the iMac and is useful only for the general distinction: a trackball can reduce the desk area needed for mouse movement. Macworld’s 1999 roundup also documents replacement USB mice as another contemporary response to the bundled design.

Was there really a “mini-economy” around the mouse?

There was a small, visible aftermarket niche: contemporary reporting names at least two shells designed to change the Apple mouse’s shape. The evidence does not establish how many were sold or the size of the market, so “mini-economy” works as a colorful description rather than a market statistic. Nor does the period reporting establish that either accessory is still made or available to buy.

What does the mouse’s afterlife show?

The hockey-puck mouse became a shorthand for the gap between a striking product design and a shape that some people found difficult to use. The shells offered a low-cost way to alter the bundled device; other buyers could replace it or choose a stationary trackball. The differing opinions in 1999 coverage are a reminder that a design can provoke strong criticism without being uncomfortable for everyone.
