The game’s publisher says you can go anywhere, while warning that enemies in some zones are much deadlier than others. By contrast, The Elder Scrolls Online describes its zones as broadly accessible without worrying about being under-powered, and Skyrim lets players adjust difficulty by changing how much damage they deal and take.
Why exploring too early can backfire
An open map can invite you to head in any direction, but access and readiness are different things. A game may let you enter a region before your character is equipped or strong enough to handle its threats. That creates a choice: push on for the risk and discovery, or mark the danger and return later.

Of the games covered here, ELDEN RING is the clearest example of that tension. The other two show why the premise does not apply to every open-world game: The Elder Scrolls Online describes broad zone access, while Skyrim offers a difficulty control that changes combat damage.
ELDEN RING: you can go anywhere, but not everywhere is equally safe
Bandai Namco Entertainment America explains that players “certainly can go anywhere,” but that enemies in some zones are “much deadlier than others.” The publisher’s suggested general early route is Limgrave → Liurnia of the Lakes → Caelid. It is guidance rather than a required sequence; the same overview says players can retreat from a difficult boss or pass through an area without fighting.

Use the world’s signposts without treating them as rules
Bandai Namco’s early-game tips recommend finding map fragments to reveal the map and using markers to remember monsters that are too powerful for now. These tools turn retreat into a plan: note where the threat is, explore elsewhere, and come back when you choose. The publisher also recommends spending runes to level up at a Site of Grace.
- If a boss overwhelms you: leave and return later rather than assuming every encounter must be beaten immediately.
- If an area is dangerous: explore through it without engaging in fights where possible, or mark the threat for a later visit.
- If you want a broad direction: use Limgrave, Liurnia of the Lakes, then Caelid as the publisher’s general route—not as a locked progression path.
These options make early exploration a risk-management choice, not a prohibition. Players who enjoy testing boundaries can do so, while those who prefer a more measured approach have publisher guidance for retreating, marking threats, and leveling. The Elder Scrolls Online: zones are designed for broad access
The Elder Scrolls Online offers a contrasting structure. ZeniMax Online Studios’ new-player guide says its zones have no level caps and that players can travel among them without worrying about being under-powered for the area. That makes zone choice less of a warning about entering too soon than it is in a game where specific regions contain much deadlier enemies.

For players who want to follow curiosity without first checking whether a region is meant for later, the guide’s description points to a more flexible zone structure. It does not establish that every encounter is equally easy; it addresses whether players need to worry about being under-powered for a zone. Source: The Elder Scrolls Online New Player Guide.

Skyrim: adjust combat difficulty instead of avoiding a region
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim gives players another way to respond when exploration leads to fights that feel too difficult. Bethesda Support says the difficulty setting changes the damage the player deals and takes. This is a direct combat adjustment, rather than a zone-scaling guarantee: it can make encounters more manageable without requiring you to follow a particular route.
That option suits players who would rather tune combat than postpone an excursion. Bethesda’s cited guidance establishes the damage adjustment, but does not specify a recommended setting for any particular character or encounter. Choose ELDEN RING if you like the possibility that an enticing route may lead into danger, and are comfortable marking a threat or stepping away. The Elder Scrolls Online better fits an urge to travel between zones without worrying about being under-powered for the area. In Skyrim, the documented flexibility is adjusting combat difficulty rather than relying on a stated zone rule.
