Use open captions when you need the text to remain visible in the video regardless of the player or destination. Neither option is universally better: choose the workflow that delivers accurate, synchronized captions without covering important visuals, then test it on the actual stream.
Open captions vs. closed captions
W3C defines captions as synchronized visual or text alternatives for speech and the non-speech audio information needed to understand media. That can include speaker identification, sound effects, music, and laughter—not dialogue alone.

In some regions, “subtitles” is used to mean captions generally. Here, “captions” means same-language accessibility text that includes relevant audio cues; translated subtitles are a separate use of on-screen text.
Which type should you use?
Choose closed captions when viewer control matters
Closed captions are a good starting point if the destination supports an incoming caption feed and viewers should decide whether to display it. Before the event, validate caption ingestion and the viewer controls on the service and player your audience will use.

Choose open captions when destinations vary
Open captions are a practical starting point for an embedded stream, a simulcast, or destinations where caption controls may not be available or consistent. Since the captions are part of the image, check their size, contrast, position, and readability on the actual video layout.
Prioritize accuracy when errors could confuse viewers
For formal events, unfamiliar names, specialist language, or high-consequence instructions, choose the production workflow that can provide and verify accurate captions. W3C says live captions are usually produced by professional real-time captioners or CART providers. Automatic speech recognition can make mistakes, and live errors leave little time for correction.

Caption essential audio either way
If the stream’s speech or other audio carries information viewers need, provide captions whether they are open or closed. Include relevant non-speech sounds as well as dialogue so the text conveys the information needed to understand the event.

WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.2.4 states: “Captions are provided for all live audio content in synchronized media.” W3C’s supporting guidance recognizes live caption creation with either open captions or supported closed captions as techniques for meeting this criterion. The criterion is about providing captions; it is not a blanket instruction to burn text into every video.

Captions make auditory information in real-time video accessible to people who are deaf or hard of hearing. They can also help people who process written information more easily than audio. Include speaker identification or sound information when those details are needed to understand what is happening.

How caption delivery works on YouTube Live and Twitch
YouTube Live
YouTube’s documented options include captions embedded in the video using EIA 608/CEA 708, or delivery through supported caption software over HTTP. For its event workflow, YouTube describes enabling closed captions, copying a signed caption-ingestion URL, and giving it to a captioner or compatible software. Its support page lists Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net in the supported-software section.

For the documented event workflow, YouTube says to add a 30-second or 60-second broadcast delay. It also says the described embedded 608/708 workflow currently supports one caption track. These are YouTube-specific setup details, not general requirements for all caption workflows. Check YouTube’s live caption instructions before the event because platform interfaces and behavior can change.

Twitch
Twitch describes delivering real-time closed captions through broadcasting software, including an OBS plugin route that lets viewers toggle captions. Its guide also discusses platform-specific caption formats. Confirm the workflow with your current encoder, channel, and player; a Twitch setup should not be assumed to work on another service. Prepare and check captions before going live
- Choose the caption mode for your destination. Decide whether the audience needs a player toggle or whether captions must remain visible across uncertain destinations.
- Set up the actual delivery path. For closed captions, verify that your platform receives the feed and that the player exposes captions. For open captions, verify that the text is embedded in the video layout where intended.
- Review names and specialist terms. Check people’s names, acronyms, and technical vocabulary with the caption provider or in available caption review tools. YouTube advises creators to review automatically generated captions because speech recognition can produce errors.
- Check timing and visual placement. Confirm that captions appear in sync and do not obscure relevant video content. For open captions, check the layout at the size viewers are likely to watch; for closed captions, confirm the controls and display in the target player.
- Test the viewer experience. Watch a test stream using the intended destination and player. Confirm that captions are visible, readable, and usable—not just that your production software indicates a caption connection.
YouTube’s guidance on automatic-caption review is at Review automatic captions. If you publish a recording afterward, W3C notes that minor accuracy edits may be needed.
