Design a live stream overlay by choosing the output format first, keeping the main content unobstructed, preparing assets with the right transparency, and arranging them as ordered sources in OBS. Preview the finished scene at the sizes and orientations viewers will actually use.
1. Choose the canvas and viewing format
Start with the shape and resolution of the stream, not the decorations. OBS identifies 16:9 as a common viewing ratio and recommends producing content at a resolution such as 1920×1080 or 1280×720. These are examples, not universal platform requirements. See the OBS aspect-ratio guide.

If you plan to stream vertically as well as horizontally, design for portrait viewing rather than assuming a horizontal scene will simply fit. Adapt the selected scenes, keep important visuals centered, account for platform interface safe zones, and test the result on a phone. Twitch provides dual-format guidance, but check its current page for platform-specific details: Dual Format Streaming on Twitch.
2. Decide what deserves screen space
Write a short design brief
List what viewers need to see: the game or presentation, a webcam if it adds value, and essential identifiers or status information. Treat everything else as optional. An overlay should not fill empty space merely because it is available.

Recording and selected advanced features are activated via optional TAO Cloud licensing. A versatile video switcher with touch screen 2.1" for entry-level content creation.
Build a clear visual hierarchy
Give the game or presenter the largest, clearest area. Reserve smaller regions for a camera frame, name or social bar, and brief labels only when they help viewers. Elgato notes that social bars are often horizontal and can sit at the top, bottom, or sides; place them where they do not cover the primary content.
Use alignment, readable type, adequate color contrast, and a limited palette. Twitch’s design guidance is written for Twitch extensions, not as a mandatory OBS rule, but its advice about hierarchy and limited screen space is useful when composing a scene. Overlay elements can also compete with the player interface, so check how the design looks inside the actual viewing area. See Twitch’s Designing Extensions guidance.

- BUILT-IN 4.5-INCH MULTIVIEW DISPLAY: Monitor all four HDMI inputs, Program, Preview, resolution status, and audio levels directly on the integrated screen. The compact all-in-one design reduces the need for a separate production monitor.
- 4-CHANNEL HDMI SWITCHING: Connect and switch between up to four HDMI video sources with 30 adjustable transition effects, including Mix and DIP. Landscape and portrait production modes support traditional broadcasts and vertical social media content.
- PTZ CONTROL AND PRODUCTION TOOLS: Control up to four compatible PTZ cameras through VISCA over IP, with four position presets available for each camera. Chroma key, luma key, PIP, DSK, and logo overlay tools help create polished live productions.
- USB 3.0 UVC LIVE STREAMING: Send uncompressed HD video to a computer through the USB 3.0 UVC connection for use with OBS and other UVC-compatible streaming or conferencing software. No separate USB capture card is required.
- FLEXIBLE VIDEO AND AUDIO WORKFLOW: Assign the AUX HDMI output to IN1–IN4, PGM, Clean PGM, PVW, Clean PVW, PAT, or Multi View for recording and monitoring. Two 3.5 mm audio inputs and a headphone output support external audio sources and real-time monitoring.
3. Choose the right graphic assets
- Static graphics with transparency: Elgato recommends PNG for static transparent overlay elements.
- Animated graphics with transparency: Elgato recommends WEBM when an animated overlay needs transparency.
- Webcam frames: Choose a widescreen, 4:3, vertical, or square opening to suit the camera and composition. If the opening is an irregular shape, use a mask so the camera image fits without spilling over the frame.
Keep labels and decorative details legible at the actual stream size. A graphic that looks clear at full size in an editor can become difficult to read when reduced in the scene.

4. Assemble and layer the overlay in OBS
Think of an OBS scene as a stack: sources higher in the list appear in front of sources below them. OBS’s BRB-scene tutorial demonstrates a practical sequence with image, text, and captured-content sources.

- Create or select the scene. In OBS, select the scene you want to design, or create a new one for the layout.
- Add the background. Add an image source for a full-screen background if the design needs one, then position and resize it in the preview.
- Add the captured content. Add the game, screen, or other capture source. Size it to the canvas and keep the important content visible.
- Add foreground graphics and labels. Add frames, bars, and text, then place them above the captured content in the source list where they belong.
- Adjust and verify the order. Move sources up or down until the background sits behind the content and foreground elements sit in front. Confirm that frames do not hide the camera or important action.
When a source does not match the canvas ratio, avoid stretching as the automatic fix. OBS warns that stretching can distort or blur an image. Scaling or cropping may preserve its appearance better, but cropping removes part of the source. The OBS aspect-ratio guide explains the trade-offs.
5. Preview the scene at stream size
- Check text and graphics for legibility, contrast, and edge clipping.
- Make sure the overlay does not cover the important game action, presentation, or webcam image.
- For vertical output, inspect the adapted scene on a mobile device and consider platform interface safe zones.
- Test with representative audio and movement, not just a still preview. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the stream; its guidance is about stream setup and reliability, not a formal overlay test standard. See YouTube’s encoder settings and stream-health guidance.
6. Choose an approach that fits the stream
| Approach | Best suited to | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Static graphic files | Clean frames, labels, and backgrounds that do not need motion | Simple to place; animated effects are not part of the static asset |
| Animated transparent graphics | Subtle movement or animated accents | Use a transparency-capable format such as WEBM, and ensure motion does not distract from the main content |
| One horizontal scene | Streams designed for a landscape viewing area | May not compose well in portrait viewing |
| Separate horizontal and vertical scenes | Streams intended to support both orientations | Requires adapting and testing each composition rather than relying on a simple resize |
| Custom graphics | A layout with specific branding or unusual framing | More flexible, but requires designing and preparing the assets |
| Templates or asset packs | A faster starting point for common frames and layouts | Check that assets suit the target format, are readable at stream size, and have the transparency you need |
Or let it run in the cloud
