Open code can prove that software follows its stated method; it cannot turn a predicted value into a measurement of one person’s energy expenditure.
What a TDEE calculator estimates
Total energy expenditure (TEE, often called TDEE in calculator interfaces) includes resting or basal metabolism, the thermic effect of food, and physical activity. A resting-energy equation estimates only one component; a calculator generally needs an additional activity method or an equation that estimates total expenditure directly.

The National Academies describes objective measurement of total energy expenditure using doubly labeled water over days or weeks. A calculator that applies a prediction equation instead produces an estimate based on inputs and assumptions. The distinction matters: a reproducible result is not necessarily a precise prediction for an individual. See Dietary Reference Intakes for Energy (2023), Chapter 5.

There is no single universally best architecture or formula established for every population and life stage. Make the method explicit before implementing it: identify the population the equation was designed or evaluated for, whether it predicts resting energy or TEE, required inputs, and how activity is handled.

Resting-energy equation plus activity
One common design estimates resting energy first and then applies an activity factor. The Mifflin–St Jeor Calculator educational site describes this approach and says it publishes an 840-profile formula-comparison dataset for verification. Treat those statements as claims by that maintained educational site, not as findings from the original equation paper or a regulator: About This Site.
Multiple resting-energy equations plus a modifier
The public Go command-line project tdee says it averages estimates from Mifflin–St Jeor, original Harris–Benedict, and revised Harris–Benedict, then applies a lifestyle modifier. It requests height, weight, age, and sex, and supports metric or imperial height and weight. Averaging several formulas is an implementation choice; it does not, by itself, establish greater accuracy. Review the project’s current README for its documented choices: LGUG2Z/tdee.

Population-specific total-energy equations
The National Academies’ 2023 report describes TEE equations with age- and sex-specific groupings and age-specific physical-activity categories, including distinct equations for children and adults. In the report’s analysis, body-composition-based equations performed slightly better than height-and-weight models for adults, but not children. These findings describe the equations and groups analyzed in that report; they should not be generalized to every formula or user.

Input categories are part of the model, not merely interface details. OpenNutriTracker’s code comments identify an IOM equation source and explain that, for non-binary users without an explicit hormone profile, the project uses a midpoint as a comfort and privacy choice. The comments say this is not a statistical baseline and that the referenced equations are sex-stratified. That is the project’s stated rationale, not an independently established clinical approach. Inspect the code and its context before deciding whether a similar policy fits your application: OpenNutriTracker repository.

What to document for a reproducible result
A result should be traceable from entered values to displayed output. Document the model and implementation choices in terms a reader can check, including:
- Equation and population: Name the equation, link its source, and state the population or life stage it represents.
- Inputs and units: List required inputs, supported units, valid ranges, and how units are converted. Explain how sex categories and activity levels map to the calculation.
- Arithmetic and rounding: Show the equation, intermediate values, activity treatment, and when rounding occurs. Avoid rounding intermediate values if the published method does not require it.
- Output meaning: Label the result as an estimate, identify the assumptions behind it, and avoid presenting a calculated number as a personal measurement.
- Change history: Keep tests and method changes under version control; note when an equation, conversion, or activity mapping changes so old and new outputs can be distinguished.
Build tests that can catch implementation errors
A useful test suite separates the question “Did the code implement the documented method?” from “Does that method predict an individual’s measured expenditure?” The first can be checked with reference cases. The second needs evidence beyond arithmetic tests.

- Write down the contract. Specify equations, input units, supported ranges, conversion behavior, activity choices, and output precision before encoding them.
- Create hand-checkable reference cases. Include examples for every equation branch, unit system, activity choice, and relevant boundary. Show enough intermediate values for another person to reproduce the result without running the program.
- Test conversions independently. Verify height and weight conversions separately from equation arithmetic; this helps identify whether a discrepancy comes from unit handling or the formula.
- Reject invalid or unsupported inputs. Test missing, zero, negative, malformed, and out-of-range values, including ages outside the equation’s intended scope. Do not silently return a plausible-looking estimate for an unsupported case.
- Automate regression checks. Keep expected outputs under version control and update them deliberately when the equation or activity mapping changes. A changed result should have a traceable reason.
- Compare independent implementations carefully. A 2025 application paper describes black-box checks and comparisons with manual calculations. Those support functional and arithmetic validation; they do not demonstrate that the result matches a particular person’s measured expenditure. See Pratama, “Calorie Intake Monitoring Application Using the Mifflin–St Jeor Algorithm” (2025).
Where a project publishes an inspectable comparison dataset, it can offer another way for readers to check behavior. The Mifflin-St Jeor Calculator site says its 840-profile dataset is available for this purpose; attribute that claim to the site and verify that the dataset’s assumptions match the calculator being assessed.
Describe uncertainty without promising personal accuracy
The National Academies reports standard errors of predicted TEE at average age, height, and weight ranging from 96 to 342 kcal/d — National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2023. The range is across the report’s analyzed age-sex strata; it is not a universal error bar for every calculator or an individual result. In a described external-validation analysis of 65 studies representing 5,056 participants, predicted and observed TEE correlations ranged from 0.92 to 0.97 — National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2023. Those figures characterize the report’s particular analyses, not a guarantee for a web application or an individual.
For responsible presentation, separate software confidence from model uncertainty. Tests can establish that conversions and arithmetic match the documented equation. They cannot establish that the equation captures a particular user’s daily expenditure, activity, or physiology.
