Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor an occasional conversion, start with the app you already use—but only if it can export to the exact format you need and the result checks out. Choose dedicated open-source software when you need a repeatable workflow, broader format handling, or command-line control. The right choice depends on the file type, output requirements, installed software, and operating-system version; “built-in” does not mean the same thing on every computer.
How to choose a converter
Compare the actual options available for your file, rather than assuming one category is always better. A viewer may open a file without being able to export it, and a converter that supports a format may still alter features in the file.

- Format support: Can this specific app or installed build read your source and write your intended destination format?
- Fidelity: Are layout, fonts, embedded content, and metadata preserved well enough for the intended use?
- Workflow: Is this a one-off task, or do you need repeatable steps, batch processing, or a command-line pipeline?
- Dependencies: Does the tool require additional libraries or programs for the format you want?
- Security: If files are untrusted or processed automatically, what controls limit the formats and operations the software can perform?
Use a copy for a trial conversion, then open the output in the application or environment where it will be used. Successful conversion means a file was produced; it does not prove every feature survived unchanged.

For one common file and occasional use, first check the application in which the file was created or is normally edited. It may offer an export or “Save As” option that produces the required output without installing another program. Confirm both the input and destination formats in the app itself: the ability to view a file is not evidence that it can convert or export it.

Built-in capabilities vary with the operating system, its version, installed applications, and file type. There is no universal feature set that can be assumed across Windows, macOS, and Linux. Check the current instructions for your specific OS release and app; Microsoft’s general Windows help and learning page does not establish a particular conversion feature.
When LibreOffice makes sense for documents
LibreOffice is a practical open-source option for office files and repeatable office-to-PDF exports. Its documentation lists support across Writer, Calc, Impress, and Draw for many formats, including Microsoft Office and legacy formats. Writer can save to formats including DOCX, DOC, RTF, plain text, and HTML. Support for a format does not guarantee that every layout or feature will transfer exactly, so inspect the output in its destination app.

Choose an output for how the recipient will use the file
The LibreOffice Documentation Team’s Chapter 10: Working with File Formats, Security, and Exporting recommends OpenDocument when consistent rendering across transfers and later versions is the priority. For a document the recipient is not expected to edit, it recommends PDF. These are sensible defaults, not a guarantee that every document will render identically in every program.

Export PDFs from the command line
LibreOffice’s PDF CLI Parameters help documents command-line PDF export in Windows, Linux, and macOS shell contexts. Its options include selecting page ranges and encrypting the exported PDF with a password. The page’s example identifies PDF version 1.7 as the default for that parameter; do not assume that setting describes every installation or every export path.

- 1.Remapping - Assign any key to any other key, including ones that aren't on the keyboard, like media volume controls or the "Command/Windows" key on older keyboards like model M's.
- 2.Macros - A single key press can "play back" a series of key presses. For example, you could set F12 to send Control-Alt-Delete or set one key to represent an entire shortcut like Alt-C for "copy" when doing copying and pasting. If there's a certain combination move in gaming, you could set one key to perform the entire combination.
- 3.Function Layers - Changes the behavior of other keys when the function key is held down. Think of this like adding extra "Shift" keys to add more functions to existing keys.
- 4.IfSelect - Press a key once and it permanently changes the function of any number of keys until that same key is pressed again. Think of this like "Num Lock" which completely changes what the number pad does.
- 5.If you want to utilize the special features other than straight conversion to USB such as key remapping, macros, and layers, you will need to make a text configuration file and upload it to the converter which is most easily done in Windows. Once configured, this configuration is stored within the cable and you can use it on any computer without the need for additional drivers or software. Command-line export is useful when you need a documented procedure that can be repeated. If you use it, test the exact command and options with a copy of the document, then check the resulting PDF’s pages, formatting, and any password behavior.
When ImageMagick makes sense for images
ImageMagick is a command-line image-processing tool suited to conversions and transformations such as resizing. Its documented example converts a JPEG to PNG with magick rose.jpg rose.png. Its tools can combine operations and support command-line processing, making the same steps easier to repeat or script. These capabilities are documented features, not a comparative speed or quality benchmark.

Format support depends on the ImageMagick build and its libraries or external programs, called delegates. For example, its Image Formats reference says PDF reading requires Ghostscript and describes requirements for other formats, including SVG rendering. Check the format list for your installed build and available delegates before relying on a conversion; a format listed in project documentation may not be usable on your machine.

Security matters for automated or untrusted files
For a personal, manual conversion, the main question may be whether the result is usable. For a public service or automated workflow that handles files from other people, also review what formats and operations the converter permits and how inputs are processed. Do not assume that open-source software is automatically more private or that an operating-system tool is automatically safer.
ImageMagick’s Security Policy documentation describes configurable policies. Its web-safe policy limits reading and writing to formats such as GIF, JPEG, and PNG, and disables filters and indirect reads. The project cautions: “Overly restrictive policies might hinder legitimate image processing tasks, while overly permissive policies can introduce vulnerabilities.” Choose and review rules for the actual deployment; a policy that is appropriate for one workflow may block legitimate work or leave another deployment too permissive.
Quick Recap
Choose by task
| Need | Starting choice | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| One common file, occasional conversion | The application already installed, if it can export the exact destination format | Confirm the app supports both formats, check current steps for your OS and version, and inspect the converted output. |
| Office documents or repeatable office-to-PDF export | LibreOffice | Check formatting in the destination app; for command-line exports, test the page range, encryption, or other options you use. |
| Image conversion, resizing, or repeated command-line changes | ImageMagick | Confirm the installed build supports the required formats and has any necessary delegates. |
| Automated or public processing of untrusted files | Evaluate the converter’s policy and processing boundaries before deployment | Review which formats and operations are allowed and whether restrictions fit the service’s needs. |
Check the result before relying on it
- Confirm the destination. Ask whether the recipient needs to edit the file, view it consistently, or use it in a particular app. For office documents, that distinction can point toward an editable format, OpenDocument, or PDF.
- Convert a copy. Use the intended app or converter with the exact source and destination formats, and note any options or dependencies required.
- Inspect the output where it will be used. Check pages or image dimensions, formatting, fonts, embedded content, and metadata that matters to your use case.
- Repeat the test for recurring work. Make sure the same steps and options produce an acceptable result before automating a batch or relying on a pipeline.
