They are not interchangeable, and the available evidence does not support a fair ranking of seven open-source products. HashiCorp Vault is relevant to application encryption and key workflows, but treat it as a separate, licensing-dependent option—not as a confirmed open-source pick.
Which open-source encryption software fits each workload?
Start with where encryption needs to happen. File encryption, volume encryption, Linux block-device encryption, and an application-facing encryption service solve different problems. Choosing by workload is more useful than treating every product that mentions encryption as a substitute for the others.

Does cloud-file encryption hide filenames and metadata?
What Cryptomator protects
Cryptomator describes its purpose as client-side encryption for cloud storage. Its security target says it encrypts file contents and file and folder names, and obfuscates directory structure. Its documented vault format uses AES-GCM for file contents in chunks and AES-SIV for names. (Cryptomator Security Target and vault-format documentation.)
What remains exposed
Cryptomator warns that it does not protect an unlocked local computer from malware that can read passwords or opened files. Backup copies made by other programs may also remain outside the vault’s protection. The project also says its approach is not a complete substitute for container-based encryption when file sizes and timestamps need protection: that metadata may remain visible.

All of your data is safeguarded by hardware encryption, and no one can access your data without the password, even if you accidentally lose the USB drive. If an incorrect password is entered 10 times, the USB drive will be restored to factory settings and all data will be completely erased. You don't have to worry about data loss or theft.
- 🛡️Fast Transmission Speed🛡️ Our encrypted USB drive has a writing speed of up to 160MB/s and a reading speed of up to 480MB/s, with excellent read/write speeds and the latest USB 3.0 interface, which saves users a lot of backup time when transferring massive data files.
- 🛡️Better Cross-Platform Compatibility🛡️ The INNÔPLUS secure USB drive No software or drivers are required, and it is compatible with Windows, Mac, Linux, embedded systems, and various devices.
- 🛡️More Portability🛡️ The USB drive is small in size and easy to carry, making it a convenient way to store and transfer data. A password-protected secure USB drive is especially useful for individuals who travel frequently or work remotely.
- 🛡️Beautiful Design & Gift🛡️ The shell of the USB flash drive is made of zinc alloy, which is very sturdy and resistant to scratches, rust, and damage. This exquisite portable flash drive, along with its beautiful product packaging, makes an excellent gift for your business partners, colleagues, and family members.
Team access and identity
Cryptomator Hub documentation describes organization-level access management and sharing vault keys, with OIDC, SAML, and LDAP integration. It also covers self-hosting, deployment, backup, restore, and maintenance. Cryptomator advertises enterprise customization and white-label options; its library licensing includes AGPLv3 and commercial options. Confirm the current license, service terms, and support arrangements with the vendor before deployment. (Cryptomator Hub and library documentation.)
When is VeraCrypt the right fit?
VeraCrypt is suited to encrypted containers, partitions, and storage devices, and it can encrypt a Windows system partition with pre-boot authentication. The official project site describes it as free and open source for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
The project site reports that VeraCrypt 1.26.29 was released on June 9, 2026. Its release summary says the version added Argon2id support for non-system volumes and fixed two security issues. Check the current release and supported environment when planning deployment; a release note is not a substitute for validating your own recovery and endpoint-management procedures. - Certified to FIPS 197 - High-level information security standard approved by the U.S. Government
- Brute-Force Password Attack Protection - Data is automatically erased after 6 failed access attempts. The data and encryption key are securely destroyed and the crypto drive is reset
- Rugged Double-Layer Waterproof* Design - Protects the crypto drive against knocks, drops, break-in and submerging in water. The electronics are shielded by a hardended inner case. The rubberised silicone outer casing provides a final layer of protection
- Auto-lock - The crypto drive will automatically encrypt all data and lock when removed from a PC/Mac or when the screen saver or "computer lock" function is activated on the host PC/Mac
- Secure Entry - Data cannot be accessed without the correct high-strength alphanumeric 8-16 character password. A password hint option is available. The password hint cannot match the password
VeraCrypt documentation covers system encryption, command-line use, algorithms, key derivation, signatures, and limitations. The reviewed official material does not establish central fleet management or enterprise support terms. Validate how your organization will distribute configuration, manage endpoints, recover access, and obtain support before broad rollout.
What does dm-crypt with LUKS do?
dm-crypt is the Linux kernel’s transparent disk-encryption subsystem. Oracle’s 25.3 NoSQL security guide describes cryptsetup with LUKS as a commonly used configuration path for encrypting disks, partitions, RAID, and logical volumes.
This is a storage-layer option for Linux hosts, not a general-purpose application for sharing encrypted files across operating systems. The cited Oracle guide explains the Linux approach; it does not compare products or establish enterprise support and fleet-management capabilities.

Is HashiCorp Vault an open-source encryption choice?
HashiCorp describes Vault as an identity-based secrets-management product with encryption services, key distribution and rotation, certificates, and access policies. Its Enterprise page describes self-managed hybrid and on-premises deployments, high availability, audit controls, and compliance-oriented features. These capabilities can fit application and infrastructure teams that need centrally governed key and encryption workflows.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe cited material does not establish that Vault qualifies as open source, so do not count it among confirmed open-source options without checking the current licensing. Its FIPS statement is also narrow: HashiCorp says Leidos attested that Vault Enterprise 1.19.4+ with FIPS Enabled conforms with FIPS 140-3. That statement applies to the specified Enterprise configuration, not every Vault release or every component in an organization’s deployment.
How should an enterprise choose and deploy a tool?
Assess the operating requirements separately from the encryption feature. Open-source licensing, support for an algorithm, or a vendor’s compliance statement does not by itself establish that a deployment is suitable for your organization.
- Define the protection layer: decide whether the requirement is cloud-synchronized files, an encrypted volume, a Linux block device, or application-managed data.
- Plan identity and access: determine how users and services authenticate, how access is granted and revoked, and whether the tool integrates with your identity provider.
- Set key-custody procedures: document who can access keys, how keys are backed up and rotated, and how access can be recovered during an emergency.
- Test recovery before rollout: verify that authorized staff can restore access after a lost credential, failed device, or other recovery event.
- Plan fleet operations: check how updates, configuration, endpoint changes, and offboarding will work at your scale; do not assume centralized administration is available.
- Verify compliance evidence precisely: match any attestation to the exact edition, version, enabled configuration, and components in scope. A product claim does not validate an entire system.
- Confirm licensing and support: review current license terms, commercial options, maintenance expectations, and support arrangements for the specific product and deployment.
Why isn’t this a seven-product ranking?
The available primary-source material supports three distinct open-source workload choices, but it does not provide comparable evidence to rank seven enterprise products across licensing, maintenance, operational controls, and use-case fit. GnuPG, OpenSSL, and age appear as possible tools to investigate, but the cited material does not establish enough about their current enterprise suitability to compare them responsibly. A seven-item list would imply a level of evaluation that the evidence does not support.
