Open-Source Audio Editors for AI-Assisted Audio Workflows

Audacity documents local AI tools for transcription, stem separation, and more, but its OpenVINO plugins currently warn of incompatibility with the latest release. Ardour is built for multitrack production.

Audacity is the strongest documented choice if you want an open-source audio editor with AI-assisted tools: its OpenVINO plugins list stem separation, noise suppression, music generation and continuation, Whisper transcription, and audio super resolution. Those features are documented to run locally on supported hardware, but the current plugin download page warns that the plugins are not yet compatible with the latest Audacity version. For multitrack recording, mixing, routing, or scripted production workflows, Ardour is the better-supported fit; its reviewed official materials do not document a comparable built-in AI suite.

Which editor fits your workflow?

The available official materials do not establish that one is easier or faster for this task. Choose by the complexity of the session and whether you need multitrack production or the documented OpenVINO tools.

What AI workflows does Audacity document?

Audacity’s OpenVINO plugin page lists five AI-assisted workflows. These are plugin-dependent capabilities, so check the plugin’s compatibility and installation details rather than assuming they are included in every Audacity release.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Music stem separation: split a track into drums, bass, vocals, and other instruments.
  • Noise suppression: reduce noise, with the plugin page noting it works best on spoken-word audio.
  • Music generation and continuation: generate music or extend a musical passage.
  • Whisper transcription: create a label track containing transcription or translation for selected spoken audio or vocals. The resulting label track can be exported as subtitles.
  • Audio super resolution: upsample audio.

The Audacity AI plugin documentation says these OpenVINO features run locally on supported CPU, GPU, or NPU accelerators and do not require an internet connection. That applies to the documented OpenVINO features; it should not be taken as a statement about every Audacity plugin, external service, or other online workflow.

Check Audacity and plugin compatibility before updating

The key drawback is version compatibility. The current OpenVINO download page warns that the plugins are not yet compatible with the latest Audacity version. Audacity’s homepage displayed version 4.0.1 as the latest release when checked on October 5, 2026. Verify the compatibility notice on the download page before installing the plugins or updating an existing Audacity installation.

Older installation guidance is version-specific. In a macOS announcement dated June 11, 2025, Audacity described the first macOS release as a beta of sorts and discussed installation with Audacity 3.7.4; it said the model downloader and installer supported macOS 12 onward. That announcement does not establish compatibility with current Audacity releases. See Audacity’s macOS OpenVINO announcement.

Its feature list also documents region gain, splitting, pitch-shifting, fades, ripple editing, onset detection, unlimited undo and redo, and Lua scripting for routine tasks. This makes Ardour a strong option for production work that benefits from a configurable multitrack environment. The reviewed Ardour materials do not establish a built-in AI feature set comparable to Audacity’s documented OpenVINO tools; third-party plugins or scripts should not be confused with a documented native AI suite.

What to consider for recording versus editing

If you are editing files that already exist, an audio interface is not a prerequisite simply to use an editor or Audacity’s documented local AI effects. For computer-based recording, connected audio hardware may matter: Ardour notes that the audio interface constrains sample rate. Choose hardware according to the inputs, outputs, and recording setup you need, rather than treating an interface as a requirement for every editing task. See Ardour’s FAQ.
