The 2026 Mac Studio with M5 Ultra is a compact professional desktop built around unusually high memory capacity, powerful graphics and extensive connectivity—not a value choice for everyday computing. Its strongest case is for people whose actual video, graphics or local-AI workloads benefit from that hardware. Apple’s speed comparisons are vendor-reported, and the favorable hands-on impressions available apply to one reviewer’s configuration, so neither establishes how much faster it will be in every buyer’s applications.
What the Mac Studio M5 Ultra is built for
Apple announced the M5 Ultra Mac Studio on August 25, 2026, with availability scheduled to begin September 22. It sits at the high end of Apple’s desktop range for demanding professional work. The key buying question is not whether its specifications are impressive, but whether your applications and projects can use its compute, memory and I/O enough to justify the configured price.

For ordinary desktop tasks, the independent review from Tom’s Guide considered a cheaper desktop a better fit. The Ultra makes more sense when you need substantial headroom for large media projects, graphics work or models running locally—and can confirm that your software supports the relevant hardware.

| Apple-reported figure | What it describes | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1.3× | Multithreaded CPU performance versus M3 Ultra | Apple’s selected benchmark comparisons, published in 2026 |
| Up to 4.3× | Peak AI compute performance versus M3 Ultra | Apple’s selected comparisons; peak compute is not a promise of equivalent application or model speed |
| Up to 1.8× | Graphics performance versus the prior generation | Apple’s reported comparison, not a universal result across games or creative apps |
| 1.2TB/s | Unified memory bandwidth | Apple’s listed M5 Ultra specification |
Apple says it ran its testing in August 2026 using preproduction systems: an M5 Ultra with a 36-core CPU, 80-core GPU and 256GB memory; an M3 Ultra with a 32-core CPU, 80-core GPU and 256GB memory; and M1 Ultra systems. It used selected industry-standard benchmarks and says results reflect approximate Mac Studio performance. Those details matter: the test M5 Ultra is a configure-to-order CPU/GPU variant, and the headline multipliers should not be treated as a result for every retail configuration or workload. See Apple’s M5 Ultra performance and testing notes.
Tom’s Guide reviewed a different configuration: a 30-core CPU and 64-core GPU with 256GB memory and 4TB storage. Its reviewer reported strong performance and said the system stayed cool and quiet during demanding game and video-rendering tests. That is a useful hands-on impression, but it is one review configuration and does not settle how the M5 Ultra compares in every professional application or against current competing workstations.

Why memory may be the deciding factor for local AI
The M5 Ultra starts with 96GB of unified memory; Apple lists options for 256GB or 512GB. Its 1.2TB/s memory bandwidth and high capacity are relevant to users working with large datasets, media assets or models that need substantial memory. Apple says the capacity can accommodate large datasets and very large models locally. That describes potential enabled by the hardware, not a guarantee that a particular model will fit, run efficiently or outperform a cloud service: software support, model format and workload all matter.
Apple also describes connecting multiple Mac Studio systems over Thunderbolt 5 and RDMA for distributed AI inference, claiming up to 3× performance compared with one system. Treat this as Apple’s stated capability rather than a general scaling guarantee; actual results depend on the model, software and setup.

Configurations, ports and display support
Apple lists the base M5 Ultra configuration with a 30-core CPU (10 super cores and 20 performance cores), 64-core GPU, 32-core Neural Engine, 96GB unified memory and 1TB SSD. Configure-to-order options include a 36-core CPU with an 80-core GPU, 256GB or 512GB unified memory, and SSD capacities from 2TB through 16TB. Check the exact retail configuration when pricing: base specifications and selectable options are not interchangeable. Apple’s Mac Studio (M5 Max or M5 Ultra) technical specifications list the configurations and port details.
| Feature | M5 Ultra specification |
|---|---|
| Thunderbolt 5 | Six ports: four rear and two front |
| Other wired I/O | HDMI 2.1, two USB-A ports, 10Gb Ethernet, SDXC UHS-II slot and headphone jack |
| Wireless | Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread |
| External displays | Up to eight at up to 6K/60Hz, or four at up to 8K/60Hz, subject to Apple’s supported display combinations |
| Dimensions and weight | 7.7 × 7.7 × 3.7 inches; 8.0 pounds |
That mix suits a desk with multiple fast peripherals, high-speed networking and several displays. Confirm your specific monitor resolutions and arrangement against Apple’s supported combinations before buying. The Mac Studio is a computer, not an all-in-one; budget for a separate display and any storage your projects require if you do not already have them.

How much does the M5 Ultra Mac Studio cost?
Tom’s Guide reported a U.S. starting price of $5,499 for the M5 Ultra and a value of $12,299 for its reviewed configuration with 256GB memory and 4TB storage. These are the publication’s 2026 reported prices, not a guarantee of current price or availability. Check the live regional listing and chosen configuration before purchase; memory and SSD selections can substantially change the total.
Is the Mac Studio M5 Ultra worth it?
It is worth considering when your work can use its memory ceiling, graphics or compute capacity and the cost is justified by time saved or work enabled. A buyer considering it for local AI should establish that the target model and software fit the intended configuration. A video or graphics professional should compare performance in their own applications, alongside storage, display and port requirements—not rely solely on Apple’s multipliers.

- Strong fit: professional workflows involving demanding video, graphics or local-AI work that benefit from high unified-memory capacity and fast I/O.
- Weak fit: general computing, light creative tasks or workloads that do not need the Ultra’s capacity and can be handled by a less expensive desktop.
- Before committing: price the exact CPU/GPU, memory and SSD configuration; verify application support, required displays and peripherals; and compare against a lower-cost system using your real workload.
Tom’s Guide’s review characterizes the price as steep while seeing a case for professional video editors and people running complex AI models locally; its recommendation for everyday use was to consider the less expensive M6 Mac mini. That is the publication’s dated buying judgment, not a benchmark-based ranking of all alternatives. Apple hardware chief Johny Srouji called Mac Studio “the ultimate desktop for on-device AI and the world’s most demanding pro workflows” in Apple’s August 25, 2026 announcement. That is company promotional language; the practical case rests on whether your own workload benefits from the machine’s capabilities.
