R8 is the baseline for optimizing and obfuscating an Android release; AndResGuard focuses on resource names and APK repackaging; XopProtector describes a post-build packer with a native runtime shell. They operate at different layers, so there is no useful winner-takes-all ranking. Choose based on what you need to protect, then test the resulting release build for compatibility, performance, signing, and update behavior.
What each tool hardens
| Tool | Primary layer | What it is intended to do | Main decision point |
|---|---|---|---|
| R8 | Android build output: code and, in supported configurations, resources | Remove unreachable code, optimize bytecode, shorten code identifiers, and integrate resource shrinking | Can the app work correctly with appropriately narrow keep rules and release optimization enabled? |
| AndResGuard | Packaged resource names and paths, plus APK repackaging | Rename resource paths and filenames and optionally compress and repackage the APK | Will resource lookups, asset access, and the distribution update workflow remain compatible? |
| XopProtector | Post-build APK packaging and an on-device native shell | Project-described protections include DEX encryption, virtualized modes, native-library protection, and runtime checks | Does this packer/runtime model fit the threat model, and can the team validate its effect on the actual app? |
R8 is part of the Android build optimization path, while AndResGuard and XopProtector describe additional APK-processing stages. Their feature sets are not equivalent, and the reviewed project descriptions do not provide independent evidence that any one tool defeats a particular attacker.

Use R8 for release code and resource optimization
Android Developers describes R8 as performing code shrinking, logical optimization, and obfuscation. Shrinking removes unreachable code; optimization can include method inlining and class merging; obfuscation shortens class, field, and method names. Resource shrinking can be integrated in supported Android Gradle Plugin (AGP) configurations.
Enable it in the configuration for your AGP version
Android Developers’ 2026 guidance documents optimization { enable = true } for AGP 9.3 and higher. For versions below 9.3, it documents the legacy settings isMinifyEnabled = true and isShrinkResources = true. These are version-dependent configuration examples, not interchangeable snippets: check the project’s AGP version and the current Android documentation before changing the build script.

The resource-shrinking behavior has also changed across AGP versions. Android says AGP 8.12 introduced initial support for optimized resource shrinking, and AGP 9.0 enables it by default when resource shrinking is enabled. Configuration details vary by version, so do not assume that an older project’s setup matches a newer one.
Keep rules are a correctness trade-off
R8 cannot always infer code or resources reached through reflection, dynamic lookup, or other indirect mechanisms. Keep rules can preserve those items, but broad rules also block shrinking and optimization. Android Developers and Android Open Source Project guidance advise against blanket rules and global disabling of optimization, shrinking, or obfuscation. Add only the rules the app or its dependencies require, then build, test, and inspect the release artifact.

Optimization can make debugging harder, and Android warns that tools modifying R8 output can regress runtime performance. Android Developers reports app-size improvements of “over 50%” in a conditional case involving AGP 9.0 optimized resource shrinking and apps sharing substantial resources and code across form-factor variants. That figure is not a general promise, nor a comparison with AndResGuard or XopProtector.
Use AndResGuard when resource names and paths are the target
AndResGuard’s README describes resource-focused obfuscation: it changes resource paths and filenames and then repackages the APK. The repository documents both Gradle-plugin and command-line workflows. It also describes mapping and whitelist options for resources that must retain selected paths or be found dynamically.

Check dynamic lookups and assets
If the app accesses resources through getIdentifier, the README says those resources need to be included in the whitelist. A mapping file can preserve selected resource paths. Exercise every code path that relies on dynamic resource names or paths in the processed release build; a successful packaging step alone does not establish that runtime lookups still work.
The project README also notes a known issue involving the first value returned by AssetManager#list(String path) when the APK is compressed with 7zip. Test any code that lists assets under that condition.

Weigh 7zip against Google Play update behavior
AndResGuard documents 7zip as a repackaging option, but its README advises against using 7zip compression for Google Play distribution because it prevents file-by-file patching for app updates. If update efficiency matters, evaluate the distribution consequences before enabling that option rather than treating compression as a free size reduction.

Consider XopProtector only if a packer and runtime shell fit the threat model
XopProtector’s repository describes a monorepo with a build-time packer, including JVM and Windows desktop components, and an on-device native shell. Its documented feature set includes DEX encryption, two virtualized protection modes, native-library protection, and RASP-related functionality. Those are project-described capabilities, not independent test results showing protection against a specific attack.
The project’s own qualification is direct: “Protection raises the cost of reverse engineering; it does not make an app unbreakable.” Encryption or runtime checks should not be presented as proof that code cannot be extracted or that determined analysis can be stopped.
Before putting a packer into a release pipeline, process a representative release build and test app compatibility, startup and runtime behavior, signing, and the complete release workflow. The reviewed sources do not establish XopProtector’s performance cost, compatibility across Android versions and devices, or comparative security effectiveness. Its repository identifies an Apache-2.0 license.
Quick Recap
Choose a layer, then validate the release artifact
- Start with the problem. For release code shrinking, optimization, and identifier obfuscation, configure R8. If readable resource names and paths are the concern, assess AndResGuard. If the threat model calls for a post-build packer and runtime shell, investigate XopProtector.
- Keep each stage’s job distinct. Do not assume resource renaming replaces R8, or that a packer makes build-time optimization unnecessary. A pipeline may use more than one approach, but each added stage needs a specific purpose.
- Build and exercise a release variant. Test reflection and dynamic lookups, resource and asset access, launch and core flows, and relevant device configurations after changing rules or adding an APK-processing stage.
- Check distribution and release operations. Confirm that packaging preserves the signing and delivery workflow. For AndResGuard, make an explicit decision about 7zip in light of the documented Google Play file-by-file update limitation.
- Measure your own build. Compare the processed artifact and app behavior with the existing release under the same conditions. The reviewed sources contain no controlled head-to-head results for APK size, runtime overhead, startup impact, breakability, or compatibility, so those outcomes need app-specific validation.
