Open-Source Alternatives to SaaS Password and Secrets Managers for Teams

Passbolt, OpenBao, and Bitwarden serve overlapping but distinct needs. Choose by workflow first, then check permissions, integrations, deployment, and operating burden.

The right open-source alternative depends on what your team needs to manage. For shared employee logins and team credentials, start with Passbolt or Bitwarden’s Password Manager. For application and infrastructure secrets, consider OpenBao or Bitwarden Secrets Manager. These products overlap, but they are not interchangeable: a shared password vault is not automatically a secrets service with dynamic credentials, leases, and revocation.

Self-hosting gives a team control over where a service runs, but also makes the team responsible for operating it. Shortlist by workflow first, then confirm that the specific edition supports the deployment, permissions, integrations, auditing, and recovery your team requires.

First decide whether you need a password manager, a secrets manager, or both

Team password management

A team password manager organizes credentials that people use: shared logins, service-account passwords used by staff, and other credentials that need controlled access across a group. The important questions are who can view or share each item, whether permissions can be scoped to a person or group, and what administrative or audit controls are available.

Infrastructure secrets management

A secrets manager serves credentials and other sensitive values to applications, CI/CD pipelines, and systems. Depending on the platform, it may do more than store static values: it can issue dynamic credentials, manage leases, and revoke secrets. A developer-facing interface or command-line tool can make secrets accessible to teams, but does not by itself establish that the product covers the full lifecycle your infrastructure needs.

When one product is not enough

Some products span employee credentials and developer secrets, but the feature depth and deployment conditions can differ between those workflows. If your team has both needs, evaluate each separately rather than assuming that adopting one product—or self-hosting it—solves both.

How the three options differ

Product Best-fit workflow Deployment established by the cited material Capabilities highlighted by the source What to verify
Passbolt Collaborative human credentials; the vendor also describes DevOps use cases. Self-hosted or cloud-hosted, according to Passbolt’s product page. Sharing individual credentials or folders with fine-grained access controls; personal and shared folders; desktop and mobile apps; API, CLI, and SDK use cases. Exact feature availability by edition, plus the depth of its secrets-management functions for your systems.
OpenBao Infrastructure and application secrets for teams prepared to operate a central service. OpenBao’s homepage identifies the project and its functions; self-host-only deployment is described by Infisical’s vendor-authored comparison, not independently established here. Encrypted key/value storage, dynamic secrets, lease renewal and automatic revocation, encryption as a service, identity-based access, and revocation of individual secrets or groups. Operational complexity, deployment model, integrations, and the support and governance features your organization needs.
Bitwarden Password Manager Employee credentials and secure sharing within an organization. Bitwarden’s 2025 business-plan document lists Enterprise self-hosting; the document says organizations can use paid features of their chosen plan when self-hosted. Teams and Enterprise password organizations, secure sharing within organizations, event logs, an organization API, and two-step login methods including FIDO2 and YubiKey. Current plan eligibility, deployment conditions, and which features apply to the selected edition.
Bitwarden Secrets Manager Developer teams centrally managing and deploying privileged infrastructure secrets. Bitwarden’s 2025 FAQ says Enterprise organizations can self-host Secrets Manager alongside existing self-hosted installations. Web app and CLI support, with free, Teams, and Enterprise offerings described in the 2025 FAQ. Current tier limits, pricing, self-hosting conditions, and the integrations required by your development and deployment workflows.

These are vendor- and project-described capabilities, not results from independent hands-on testing. The OpenBao project describes itself as “an open source, community-driven secrets manager and fork of Vault managed by the Linux Foundation’s OpenSSF.” Infisical’s comparison characterizes OpenBao as Vault-like and self-host-only and notes operational complexity; those are Infisical’s comparative statements, not an independent assessment.

Choose Passbolt for shared credentials and collaboration

Passbolt is positioned as an open-source team password and credential manager. Its product page describes both self-hosted and cloud-hosted options, and features for sharing individual credentials or folders with fine-grained access controls. It also describes personal and shared folders, desktop and mobile apps, and use cases spanning workforce password management, privileged access management, DevOps secret management through API, CLI, and SDK, and IT control and audit.

FIDO2 U2F Security Key Passkey Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) USB Key PIN+Touch (Non-Biometric) USB-C Type TrustKey T120
  • Security Key : Protect your online accounts against unauthorized access by using FIDO2 and U2F authentication with T120. It's the world's most protective security key that works with windows, Mac OS, Linux as well as Chrome, Firefox, Edge and many other major browsers.
  • Certified with the new FIDO2 standard, T120 provides the benefit of fast login and strong protection against phishing, account takeover as well as many other online attactks.
  • Works with : Bank of America, Github, Google, Microsoft, DUO, Twitter, Facebook, Dropbox, Apple, ebay, BINANCE, mor and more.
  • Fits USB-C port : Insert the T120 security key into the USB-C port of each service and log in conveniently with one touch
  • For the driver download and user guide, please visit TrustKey Solutions Home support page.

That makes Passbolt a natural candidate when the core problem is getting human users to share and govern credentials. If you also expect it to act as a secrets platform for applications, check the precise edition and workflow support you would use; a vendor’s inclusion of DevOps use cases does not establish parity with a dedicated infrastructure secrets service.

Choose OpenBao for centrally operated infrastructure secrets

OpenBao is aimed at teams that need a secrets service for systems and applications. Its project homepage lists encrypted key/value storage, dynamic secrets for systems such as Kubernetes or SQL databases, lease renewal and automatic revocation, encryption as a service, identity-based access, and revocation of individual secrets or groups.

Those lifecycle functions matter if workloads need credentials that can be issued and revoked rather than simply copied from a shared vault. They also mean the team must plan how the service is deployed and administered. Treat OpenBao as infrastructure to operate, not as a password vault that becomes hands-off once installed. Infisical’s comparison describes its model as retaining operational complexity; because that comparison is vendor-authored, use it as one perspective and validate the operating requirements against your own environment.

Consider Bitwarden when you want password management and a separate secrets product

Bitwarden’s Password Manager and Secrets Manager address different audiences and should be evaluated as distinct offerings. The 2025 Password Manager business-plan document describes Teams and Enterprise organizations, secure sharing within organizations, event logs, an organization API, and an Enterprise self-host option. It also lists FIDO2 and YubiKey among two-step login methods.

The 2025 Secrets Manager FAQ describes a product for developer teams to centrally store, manage, and deploy privileged infrastructure secrets through a web app and CLI. It says Enterprise organizations can self-host Secrets Manager alongside existing self-hosted installations. The FAQ explicitly distinguishes infrastructure secrets from employees’ personal credentials, which belong in Password Manager.

Because the available plan and FAQ materials are from 2025, do not treat their tier conditions or prices as current. Bitwarden’s 2025 business-plan document listed Password Manager Teams at $4 per user per month billed annually or $5 billed monthly, and Enterprise at $6 billed annually or $7 billed monthly. Its 2025 Secrets Manager FAQ listed Teams at $6 per user per month and Enterprise at $12 per user per month. These are figures from those 2025 materials, not verified 2026 prices; confirm current prices, billing terms, geography, and feature gates directly with Bitwarden before budgeting.

Use a shortlist checklist before choosing

  • Define the assets: list employee logins, shared service credentials, application secrets, keys, and certificates separately.
  • Set access boundaries: decide whether access must be managed by team, group, individual item, or folder, and whether you need identity integration or event logs.
  • Check the secret lifecycle: determine whether static storage is enough or whether workloads need dynamic credentials, lease renewal, automatic revocation, rotation, or certificate and key management.
  • Map required clients and integrations: include browsers, desktop or mobile apps, CLI, APIs, CI/CD, Kubernetes, and identity systems that your actual users and workloads need.
  • Confirm edition and deployment: verify which tier includes self-hosting and the features you need. Do not infer that every feature is available in every edition.
  • Price the operation, not just the license: include infrastructure and staff time as well as subscriptions. Open-source software is not zero-cost to run.

What self-hosting makes your team responsible for

Self-hosting moves hosting control to your team; it does not, by itself, guarantee security or lower total cost. For either kind of manager, decide who owns deployment, patching, backups, restore testing, monitoring, recovery access, and access administration. For a secrets service, also account for how applications authenticate to it and how credentials are renewed or revoked. Compare that ongoing work with the control and deployment requirements that led you to consider self-hosting in the first place.

Before committing, verify current editions, versions, licenses, hosting options, security documentation, and plan terms with the relevant project or vendor. The products above form a focused shortlist, not a complete market ranking; alternatives such as KeePassXC, Vaultwarden, and Infisical are not compared here.
